Getting Feet Ready for Summer. A Look at Profoot, Lac-hydrin Five, Skin Actives Scientific, and Dr. Scholl’s

My feet are in pretty bad shape. Skating has been hard on them and I always had issues with calluses anyway. This year I have a bunch of cute new sandals and I am determined to get my feet looking good for summer. I started about two weeks ago with a combination of products and have had great success.I have been using a combination of moisturizers: One is Profoot Care Heel Rescue Superior Moisturizing Foot Cream. I initially got a sample of this cream in the Beauty Buyble Book and Samples and really like it. It does a good job of penetrating the very dry skin and smoothing things out. It also is quite affordable. A related product that I haven’t tried, but am interested in is the Profoot Care Heel Rescue, Intensive Overnight Foot Repair.

Right now, I generally use the Profoot in the morning. At night, I use a lactic acid product to both moisturize and help remove the calluses. My long time favorite for this is Lac-hydrin Five Moisturizing Lotion. Lac-hydrin does an excellent job when it comes to moisturizing. With a good amount of lactic acid, it also helps exfoliate very dry skin pretty well.

After I rub a good amount of Lac-hydrin into my calluses, I have been following it up with a coating of Skin Actives Scientific foot mask. Skin Actives is a great site/company for purchasing individual active ingredients and they have an active forum where information and recipes can be found. I will write more about their products in the future. I have been enjoying the foot mask and find that it adds quite a bit to my callus killing routine. It is a rather thick, and slightly oily moisturizing concoction that I find bumps up the level of softening of my dry skin. Unfortunately, Skin Actives appears to have stopped actively selling their foot mask, although anyone interested can likely find a recipe for it in their forums. A recent email newsletter from them also mentioned that it would remain available as a forum special there.

Once I have my feet pretty well gooped up, I slip on a pair of socks and leave them on until everything absorbs into my skin. Something I would love to get are the Bliss Softening Socks, but I haven’t quite been able to bring myself to splurge on them. So for now plain old socks have to do.

After all that moisture, it becomes time to exfoliate. So, during my morning shower, I have been working on the calluses with a Dr. Scholl’s Callus Reducer. It is quite comfortable to use and works very well. I was actually surprised at how little effort it takes and how quickly it gets rid of the built up dry skin.

After only two weeks I have managed to get rid of almost all of my calluses. The few tough remnants are coming along as well. My feet should be good in another week or so. I figure if this process is working for my horrible feet, it will work for anyone!

Jane Shimmer Blush

Yesterday, I reviewed Jane Be Pure Mineral Makeup. When I made that purchase, I also picked up a Jane Shimmer Blush in Natural. As with the mineral makeup, this too is a good value product. Bascially it provides a very light, sheer, neutral to pinkish shimmer that I find works quite well over matte cream blush. Or use it alone for just a bit of tinted highlight. Jane makes the same product in darker shades as well.

For those looking for a cheap sheer shimmer, it is worth checking out. Just keep in mind that it is quite sheer. Although labled as a blush, I view it more as a sheer shimmer powder that is best used to compliment another product.

Review: Jane Be Pure Minerals, a Good Value Mineral Makeup

I have really been nuts over mineral makeup lately. I keep seeing more and more of it in the stores and I keep buying it! Recently I tried another drugstore brand with pretty good results. Jane Mineral Be Pure Makeup is very reasonably priced. I believe I paid around $6 for mine at Osco. Further, unlike some of the other drugstore brands, this one is talc free. It is also oil free, wax free, and fragrance free. I could not verify though whether it contains bismuth. An ingredient list does not seem to be available online.

I purchased the fair shade and was quite happy with its coverage. Tapping it on with a kabuki brush, I found that it covered a couple of my light melasma spots better than the other drugstore brands I have tried. As with most mineral powder makeup, tapping it on helps it cover better, while brushing it on makes it work more like a regular powder. As for staying power, it was OK. It isn’t going to cover or last the way Jane Iredale or Bare Essentuals do, but I am finding that when it comes to mineral makeup, you often get what you pay for. With that in mind, Jane seems to be a very good value for the price.

Jane Be Pure Minerals are packaged in a jar with a sponge type applicator. I wasn’t crazy about the sponge and highly recommend the purchase of a kabuki brush for putting on mineral makeup. If you want a quality cheap one and live near a CVS pharmacy, take a look at the essence of beauty brush. That is a great line of inexpensive, good value brushes and I have been happy with their kabuki brush. Also, the jar is a bit small for dipping a brush in. I would prefer to see a design where the jar is a bit larger and there is a plastic shaker screen for rubbing a brush on. But aside from nit picking a few packaging decisions, I really like this mineral powder as an inexpensive, good value product.

For the Guys? American Crew Shampoo and Conditioner

Here is a review for the guys, or for the women who shop for the men in their lives. Or, maybe this is something for the women to try too! After I found that Target started carrying some better hair product brands, I suggested that Ken try American Crew Daily Moisturizing Shampoo for Men and the companion American Crew Daily Conditioner. He had previously used an American Crew styling product, but didn’t want to drive to a salon to get shampoo. So once available at Target, I thought he might like to try it.

We both like the products. Yes, I tried them and hereby declare that they are not just for the guys! The shampoo has a very nice sage scent and it does a good job of providing moisture to the hair and scalp. It lathers well, but doesn’t particularly dry or tangle the hair. Basically it has a very nice rich lather.

The conditioner is really interesting. It has a very strong menthol smell, which I really like in a shower product. I think it makes for a great eye opener in the morning! But if you don’t like the smell of menthol, you really won’t like this product; the smell is not at all subtle. Ken also reported that it made his scalp tingle. He liked that, but others might not. Something that really impressed me with the conditioner was the amount of moisturizing and detangling it provided. When I used it on my hair, it worked nearly as well for me as my current favorite KMS. Since my hair is dry and tangles easily, very few products live up to my expectations for moisture and detangling. American Crew was one of them. I have to admit that I occasionally still use a bit instead of my KMS, because it works just as well and I sometimes want that menthol scent! So at least as far as I am concerned this isn’t just a “guy product!”
