Kenra Hydrating Hair Products

Although I have several brands that I love for hair care, I keep experimenting whenever it comes time to purchase more hair products. One of my recent tries involved products from Kenra. As a bit of background, I have fairly long, dry, highlighted hair, that tends to be fine and flyaway. So it needs moisture and tangles easily.

Kenra Hair Kit Shampoo Conditioner Hair Spray
I’m quite happy with the results that I got from KENRA Moisturizing Shampoo Hydrating Formula for Added Moisture. Kenra’s moisturizing shampoo feels great with a very silky, rich lather and does not contribute to tangling in any manner. Another plus, and something that I think is needed for a higher price product to get my recommendation, is that only a small amount of the shampoo is needed to achieve a good amount of lather. Kenra fit that bill quite nicely, providing plenty of lather with a surprising small amount of product. This will easily become of the shampoos in my regular rotation.

KENRA Moisturizing Conditioner Deep Penetrating Formula for Maximum Hydration of Dry, Brittle & Coarse Hair
is an OK conditioner. I would rave about it, except that it didn’t quite meet the needs of my hair type. The conditioner itself smells great (coconut scent), and like the shampoo, it provides some heavy duty moisture without using a ton of product. But it does not detangle really well until the rinsing stage. Basically, the conditioner has more of a thicker gel type of consistency that is not real conducive to running fingers through and detangling unless water is added. Once I got to rinsing, it detangled fairly nicely, but with my long hair, I need more serious detangling action. However, my hair did look and feel incredible after it was dry when using this product. So, while this one isn’t the perfect conditioner for me, I think it would be ideal for women with shorter, and perhaps coarser hair. Lacking experience with coarser hair, I’m not 100% sure though.

So overall I was happy, but will likely not purchase the conditioner again simply because of my hair type.  Kenra is also on the expensive side. So if you would to try several Kenra products at once, check out the KENRA Gift Set Promotion (pictured), which will save you 20%.

Why I am Disappointed in Target Stores

Blogging, while becoming rather influential in consumer choices, still is seen as the black sheep of media to various companies. Perhaps it is confusion with purely personal blogs or with spam blogs, or perhaps it is resistance to change and new forms of information media. Another theory is that companies have a fear of working with blogs because they tend to exist independent of advertising obligations, ad agencies, and public relations companies. So there is always a risk that a blog who speaks with a company or receives a product and hates it will tell it like it is, without sugar coating any unpleasantness. Why companies should not fall into that trap and should embrace blogs is a topic for another day. Today is about a more narrow issue: Target’s absolute refusal to talk to a blog.

Regardless of any black sheep stigma I carry as the editor of a blog, I have been pleasantly surprised at the number of companies, retailers, and public relations agencies that work with bloggers and form great working partnerships with them. So I was particularly disappointed in Target after reading The New York Times article, Target Tells a Blogger to Go Away.

Here is what happened. A blogger from the website, Shaping Youth, called Target to express concern about an ad displaying a woman lying over the Target symbol with her crotch at the bullseye. Instead of addressing her concerns, Target responded that it does not participate with nontraditional media outlets and stated that the practice “is in place to allow us to focus on publications that reach our core guest.” For a more complete story, visit Shaping Youth’s transcript of the New York Times interview.

Now I don’t have strong feelings about the ad, and I wouldn’t be offended if Target had sent a polite response but declined to give any interviews or written reply. But to reply that bloggers as whole do not reach the store’s “core guest,” and hence are apparently irrelevant, seems to be ignoring reality. I am assuming that the term “core guest” focuses on the typical, regular shopper at Target Stores.

Why should I care? Well, I write a good deal about drugstore cosmetic and beauty brands, including some exclusive to Target. I also tend to shop at Target for items for review, and mention Target as a location where products are available for purchase. So Target has received a fair amount of business purchases and gratuitous advertising from me– free advertising that is read by a demographic that I believe includes a high number of Target’s “core guests.” Yet apparently if I would like to communicate with Target in some manner related to my blogs, I will be told that I am not worthy. Does this mean that, vicariously, my readers are not welcome as well?

I am not the type to get overly worked up over such things and I’m sure that I will continue to shop at Target. But I do now find myself questioning future mentions of Target on my blogs. I can, and often do, purchase items for review at Walgreens and CVS, both of which have worked indirectly with me on products sold exclusively in their stores via PR agents representing those products. Perhaps in regard to business purchases and decisions, I should be focusing more exclusively on them?

According to The Daily Dog, Target is looking at adjusting their policy. I hope that do.

Chanel Foundations: Vitalumieries and Double Perfection Makeup

Chanel Vitalumieries FoundationI know a number of women who swear by Chanel Vitalumieries Foundation. I recently got a few samples of this foundation and had mixed results.

I love Chanel cosmetics, so I had high hopes for this rather expensive product. For my first try, which did not fare so well, I used the foundation over plain sunscreen and moisturizer. It went on fine and look fine, but I just plain did not see anything special about it to justify the price tag.

However, when I used the foundation over a silicon primer, I found that it really stood out. The product has some luminizing properties that for whatever reason did not really work well until used over a primer. At that point I loved it and prefer it over my less expensive foundations because my skin looked nearly perfect with it on. So the upshot is that Chanel Vitalumieres is one that I would happily wear when going all out, but would not likely choose for day to day use when I just want to put on moisturizer and a bit of foundation.

I also tried samples of Chanel Double Perfection Foundation. This one is quite nice, but it  wasn’t right for my skin, which was particularly dry when I tried it. The foundation goes on wonderfully smooth and dries quickly to a matte finish. It then lasts quite well. For anyone without dry skin, Chanel Double Perfection is a wonderful foundation and comes recommended by many. But on dry skin, a mattifying foundation just doesn’t work for me. I’m hoping to try this one again in the summer, when I will appreciate the silky matte finish.

Pattern Body Wash

Like all natural bath and body products? Like unique fresh scents? How about some good moisture in a body wash? Pattern Body Wash has it all.

Pattern Body Wash
There are four cleansers available that can be used on hair, face and body: Eucalyptus and Black Pepper are stronger cleansers recommended for active people that are formulated to clean without stripping natural oils. Citrus and Cucumber are moisturizing cleaners, perfect for avoiding dry skin. Pattern products contain no parabens, and no artificial fragrances, colors, or dyes. Instead, they use natural ingredients to provide gentle cleansing, moisture, and fragrance. Each product has an ingredient list available on the site, along with a glossary of what each ingredient does.

I was immediately curious about black pepper as a body wash fragrance and was told that it is a popular item. I can see why. It really does smell great! I found the smell to be more like black licorice with just a hint of pepper and found it to be quite refreshing, especially after exercising. This is also a good scent for men, who might be turned off by more fruity scents.

The eucalyptus and cucumber scents were as expected and both nice. But my favorite was the citrus scent. First, I am kind of a sucker for anything citrus, so that is no surprise, but I also loved that it was combined with the moisturizing formula, which does indeed feel nicely moisturizing and is a joy to use. Of the four scents, the cucumber is the lightest, so those looking for less fragrance, might prefer that one.

Overall, Pattern has put together a great set of body washes that I definitely recommend.
