Why Do Celebrities Endorse Proactiv?

If you’re old enough, you might remember the first Proactiv commercials to hit the airwaves. They were hosted by Judith Light of “Who’s the Boss” fame, and met with a lot of critical acclaim. But that was over a decade ago, and we’ve come a long way since. Proactiv has graduated from using B-list celebrities to full-blown A-listers and iconic figures. They’ve got a huge list of popular celebrities from the world of acting and singing, and it seems to be growing every year. It’s clear these endorsements work because Proactiv has grown itself into a multimillion dollar company.

But when you take a look at the situation from a celebrity’s point of view, what’s in it for them? Is it smart to admit they have skin problems or to endorse a product like this? Some of the celebrities endorsing Proactiv are downright surprising, and you would never have guessed they would be willing to do it. And yet there they are on late-night television, telling the world about their skin problems. Let’s take a look at some of the reasons why someone like Avril Lavigne, Justin Bieber, or even P Diddy would lend their name to this acne treatment.

Exposure – in the world of show business, they say any exposure is good exposure. As long as your face is on television, you remain in the hearts and minds of people across the nation. It doesn’t necessarily have to be in a positive light all the time as we’ve seen with the example of reality television. To put it in the simplest terms, as long as you’re on TV, there’s something positive to be gained from it. Even if you’re telling people that you suffer from acne, it’s not really that embarrassing, especially if you’re making money while doing it.

Money – all of this boils down to business, and all business is about money. If someone offered you a nice chunk of change to endorse their product, wouldn’t you do it? It doesn’t matter if you already make millions of dollars from record sales or movie tickets, another source of income is hard to resist. We’re not exactly sure how much the stars get paid, but it’s probably a considerable sum. You can do a quick Google search of celebrities who do commercials in foreign countries, and you’ll find an equally impressive list of stars. They get paid handsomely, and it doesn’t really hurt their careers at all.

Attention – celebrities are used to being in the limelight and having attention focused on them. But whereas exposure benefits their career, attention helps to feed egos. It’s no secret that stars have egos the size of baseball fields, so they’re willing to seek out audiences wherever they can find them. Commercials have long been a quick and easy way for stars to get attention from a large amount of people at the same time.

They really use it – one of the stipulations in a Proactiv endorsement contract is that a celebrity actually has to use it. So you don’t have famous people telling others how great Proactiv is without actually having experienced successful results. One of the reasons why you have a full array of these celebrities willing to support Proactiv it’s because it’s actually work for them.

They want to help – celebrities are humans too, and there’s no more human problem than acne. It’s a universal condition that can happen to anyone at any age. And when it does occur, it’s embarrassing and it can impact a person’s life. Many famous people have experienced acne in the past, or they know the stress of having to look great all the time. They go under more scrutiny than anyone else think the constant coverage from tabloid magazines or celebrity related television shows. There’s a part of them that wants to help other people going through the same thing, and they deserve full credit for that.
