Being in college makes it hard to stay in style. College makes girls want to put on their sweatpants, throw their hair up and forget about make up every day. Believe me, I’ve been there. College can really stress people out and girls probably find it difficult to keep up with the latest fashion trends. For those of you overwhelmed college females looking for some new fashion tips, here is what I have found to be cute and easy styles to pull off.

The infinity scarf
Scarves are cute and practical especially for places where it is cold in the winter. The new fashion trend that has taken off everywhere is the infinity scarf. It is just like what it sounds. This scarf has no beginning and no end. It is one continuous circle that you wrap around your neck a few times. They are very cute, comfy and affordable.

Elbow patch sweaters
You may have seen this style in the past on older men and grandpas. Big chunky sweaters with elbow patches are no longer things of the past. They are now considered in style and very fashionable for girls. I wouldn’t suggest going through your grandpa’s closet to find these types of sweaters, but places like Forever 21, H & M, and Charlotte Russe all sell this hot commodity.

Tights
Tights used to be itchy and uncomfortable when I had to wear them to church as a five year old. Tights are a new way to spice up an outfit. Wearing a dress and tights is easy and also comfortable at the same time. Instead of wearing sweats, throw on some tights! They are a lot cuter than those old baggy things that I know you’re thinking about putting on. Don’t do it! Slip on some cute tights that have a pattern to them with a solid dress. I guarantee you will get a lot of compliments.

Lace-up boots
Boots have been all the rage for a couple of years now. This season, they have changed up the typical boot though. The newest trend with boots is the lace up. These boots are easy to throw on over jeans, leggings or tights. They have a lot of different colors but the most popular ones are brown, black and tan. I have a pair of beige ones and I wear them with everything. They are very practical in winter and they can dress up any outfit in an instant.

Lacy tops
Another item that I have noticed that has become quite popular is the lacy top. Long sleeved or short sleeved, this shirt is a really high fashion item. These shirts are really lacy and girls can wear a cute, colored undershirt to make the lace stand out.

TOMS shoes
I’m sure you have all seen and heard about these shoes. Apparently, every time a pair of these shoes is bought, a pair goes to a poor child in Africa who does not have shoes. Although TOMS can be really expensive, they are for a good cause. They are also very light and comfortable shoes that are perfect for walking to and from campus. These popular shoes are perfect for girls to slip on when they need to go out and walk around.

It may be cold now, but it is never too early to start preparing for the next season in fashion. The early Spring/Summer 2012 fashion shows have returned mixed views on where next year will take us in terms of clothes, but there have been a few underlying trends identified that will likely drive sales of handbags and purses. With pastel colors slated to make a return to prominence when the warmer weather arrives, several leaders of the fashion pack have already started to release bag models featuring the matte tones that are disappearing off shelves in a hurry.

As always, the Max Mara design team has come up with a winner and their Bobbio Croc Print Leather Bag is one of the early hot products for the season. The light green bag is made from leather and features a crocodile texture print to enhance the style. A further complement is the gold colored metal zip which provides a soft contrast with the green of the bag and shoulder strap. The slightly oversized dimensions of the bag, with a width of 8.5 inches, match the styles that have been released by other designers. In short, this bag hits every high note of the expected spring trends, with the right color, style, and size.

Another trend for handbags that seems to be coming out of the fashion shows is a penchant for knitted bags. Usually reserved for fall and winter collections, several designers debuted knitted styles for next spring, with one of the highlights being a darker cream colored option from Dolce & Gabbana. The intricate weave of the fabric and trademark latch are subtle and could fit well a knitted hat as a set of matching accessories. Other designers that are cashing in on the knitted materials are Proenza Schouler and Alberta Ferretti. While the knitted style may be popular next spring, the texture may not match the lighter materials used for clothes during this time. Therefore, this may be one trend a woman could choose to skip in putting together a more functional wardrobe.

Last, but certainly not least, large clutches are also slated to make a big splash this spring. Several designers have come up with their own version of the folder-type accessory, including Victoria Beckham and Marni, but the most exciting clutch handbag series is the line being produced by Donna Karan. Made from several different types of wood, the clutches are quite different from anything else currently on the market. Despite the wooden construction, the bags are very light and a woman will find that they are no heavier than bags made from leather or other materials. The classic design lines presented by the three models are quickly being lauded by fans and this is one bag that experts are predicting will be seen on the street in droves.

Although handbags are usually one area where designers normally agree on trends, next year seems to be an exception to the rule. Many different styles were featured at the Spring/Summer 2012 shows and it will be interesting to see which ones translate from critical acclaim to street popularity.

Staying warm in winter requires bulky clothes that focus more on functionality than fashion. The importance of staying warm should outweigh the need to look great. Or at least that’s what you’ve always been told! Nowadays, there is no need to look ugly while staying warm. Fashion oriented winter clothing has become big business. These clothes are designed to help keep you warm while also letting you look great. There are various brands and styles of fashionable winter clothing that you can integrate into your daily life. Pick the brands and styles that go best with your own unique style.

Five Pieces of Winter Clothing that are Fashionable but Functional

Scarf

Scarves are fashionable and functional: They look great with a variety of styles but they also keep your neck warm. Start by picking a scarf that you think is longer than necessary. A scarf that is too short will be hard to style. It will also leave areas of your neck exposed to the cold. Avoid picking scarves with intricate patterns or designs. These can sometime appear tacky and are often hard to integrate into your style. Instead, get several different one color scarves. Pick colors that go well with your wardrobe. Wear different scarves based on your style for the day. This will help you look good while keeping your neck warm.

Gloves or Mittens

Ski gloves and insulated work gloves are very warm. However, they’re a complete fashion faux pas. You don’t have to wear these bulky, ugly gloves to keep your hands warm. Buy a pair of top brand leather gloves. These gloves are designed for warmth and style. Try them on before purchasing to find which brand you like best. Wear leather gloves to create a no-nonsense, business oriented look. Thread or felt based mittens also work well with a style that integrates a lot of fur or felt. Buy multiple pairs of mittens to help coordinate individual pairs with different sets of clothing in your wardrobe. Mittens are great for a more “fun loving” look.

Felt Hat and Earmuffs

A single color felt hat is a fashionable way to keep your head warm. Single color hats make it easier to integrate the hats into your style and wardrobe selection. Avoid buying hats with logos, intricate patterns or God help us, pom-poms. These types of hats are great…for little kids. You’re an adult now: dress like one. On that note, don’t be ashamed to wear earmuffs! They may look “kiddy” but they are actually a very functional way to keep your wears warm. Again, focus on simple, single color earmuffs. These are much easier to integrate into your rapidly growing winter wardrobe.

Boots

Don’t forget to buy a great set of boots this winter! You may resist buying boots: rubber boots may keep your feet dry and warm but they can look so ungainly and ugly. Don’t suffer in inappropriate shoes for the sake of fashion! Instead, go to a great shoe store and look through the boots. There are plenty of fashionable boots available that will still keep your feet warm. Be a bit more “extravagant” with your boot style. Few people will really take the time to notice your boots unless they clash with your wardrobe or compliment it perfectly.

Coat

A great winter coat should be the central focus of a functional but fashionable winter wardrobe. Avoid oversized, bulky coats. Instead, use coats like a fitted pea coat. A fitted pea coat is designed specifically for you. It is designed for comfort, warmth and style. Fur coats and double breasted coats are also comfortable, warm and fashionable.

Budget a bit tight? Why splurge, when you can steal a great look for less? There is no need to blow your budget on expensive clothing when fashionable items can be found for less at stores such as Sears. I was provided a gift certificate to pick out an outfit and I was rather happy with the choices that I encountered.

It has been awhile since I shopped at Sears. In my college days, I used to shop Sears quite a bit for their decent selection of affordable items. Sears always kept an eye out for trends and stayed up to date on fashion, making them a favorite choice of mine. But over time, as my income increased, I tended to overlook Sears in favor of other, more expensive options. Going back to do some shopping there showed me that Sears is still doing quite well in the fashion department. The UK Style by French Connection collection and the Kardashian Kollection in particular had a number of unique and interesting items. Sears is also a decent choice for petite basics, something that I need, given that I am 5 feet, 2 inches tall!

I picked up two outfits, one to feature here and the other to feature on Girl Gloss. I was happy to find most of the items on sale. The below outfit features petite pants by Apostrophe ($19.98), a very comfortable sweater from the Kardashian Kollection that has an interesting cutout pattern along the sleeve ($34.99), and a Kardashian Kollection belt ($20). The complete outfit was right around $75. I particularly love the belt with this. It is comfortable, stretchy, and it works well to hide some bulges that I am more than happy to hide!

Each item in this outfit will work well with other clothing items that I already own, and they also match up well with the items I purchased to feature on Girl Gloss. I noted while shopping that the both the Kardashian Kollection and the UK Style by French Connection Collection had stylish items that mixed and matched together quite well. I wanted to grab shoes for the outfit, and Sears had a great selection, but I have ridiculously tiny size 4 to size 5 feet, so I was out of luck there. But that is nothing new for me. I am accustomed to shopping specialty stores for shoes in my size! One additional note: The Kardashian Kollection also has a nice selection of affordable handbags in a number of sizes.

Overall, this was a fun shopping trip that resulted in some nice finds for not all that much money. If you are looking for some affordable fashion, head on over to Sears and take a look.

Disclosures: I was provided a Sears gift card through Glam Media in order to complete the purchases for this post. No monetary compensation was provided by Sears or Glam Media for this post. The opinions expressed herein are those of the author and are not indicative of the opinions or positions of Sears.

Hair today gone tomorrow

Throughout the years people have worn some pretty extravagant hairstyles and not much has changed today. Daring dos and lavish locks are in fashion and bigger and bolder styles are considered trendy.

Here are some of the craziest hair pieces from the past and present.

Reformation Wigs

Marie Antoinette Image Source

The Church of England broke away from the Roman Catholic Church in the 16th century and many changes occurred in society. Law and restrictions on wigs were lifted and both men and women wore big, bouffant and elaborate hair pieces.

During the 18th century women often wore wigs that were over one metre high and lavishly decorated with fruit, birds and even ships. They would don the same hair piece for months and each creation would be matted with lard to stop it falling apart. Unfortunately, however, the wigs often attracted insects and at one point caused embarrassing lice infestation amongst the upper classes. Nice!

Egyptian wigs

Ancient Egyptian Wig Image Source

Incredibly extravagant wigs were worn by wealthy Ancient Egyptians of both sexes. The hair pieces would be extremely ornate and would be decorated with beads, ribbons, hair bands, tiaras, tassels and even flowers. The wigs were often made from human hair which was sometimes supplemented by plant fibres or sheep’s wool. They would take hours to make and were available in dark as well as blonde shades.

A little fascinating fact: Egyptians were obsessed by hygiene and often shaved and plucked every hair off their body to protect them from lice. They would rub scented oils onto their heads (or natural hair if they still had it) and walk around smelling as good as possible all day.

Judges wigs

Lord Chief Justice Image Source

Judges and barrister in Britain have worn elaborate head gear in courts for hundreds of years including flat bonnets and caps. It is thought that wigs were introduced around 1680 and were originally made from powdered white or grey hair. In 1822 a man called Humphrey Ravenscroft invented a legal wig made of whitish-grey horsehair which did not need frizzing, curling, perfuming or powdering. It is thought that judges initially began to wear wigs as a form of disguise; however, today they have become part of practice and tradition.

Panto Wigs

Panto Dames Image Credit

The pantomime Dame is renowned for being utterly hilariously and highly entertaining. Normally played by a man in drag, this traditional character often wears an outrageous wig, bright make up and behaves in a melodramatic way. The hair pieces come in all different shapes and sizes but are usually as wacky as ever. Dames have been seen in blue, green and even red wigs which clash wonderfully with their mismatched outfits.

Hair extensions

Girl Having Extension Put In Image Credit

Extensions are extremely popular in modern culture and are used to add length and volume to natural locks. Usually made from human hair or synthetic fibres, the extensions can be sewn, glued or clipped in and can last for as long as eight weeks at a time. Available in a number of natural colours, it is possible to match a particular hair colour entirely or select darker and lighter tones for highlights. The hair pieces are also available in bright, bold colours for a more dramatic effect and are raved about in the celeb world.

Clip in fringes

Clip On Fringe Image Source

Believe it or not you can now buy clip in fringes to transform your look in an instant. Available in all different styles and colour, the fringes simply attach to the front of your head and blend in with your natural cut. There are many colours to choose from so you can either select a shade which best matches your natural hair or go completely wild and choose a different colour altogether. Nothing seems too extreme when it comes to hair these days, so whatever you go for, just flaunt it with confidence.

Pony hair

Fake Pony Tail Image Source

Hair pieces are all about convenience these days and are designed to be simple, yet effective – if not slightly bizarre. Incredibly, you can actually purchase your very own pony tale which connects to your hair and is supposed to look like the real deal. So, forget spending weeks and months growing your natural locks and perhaps opt for a clip in style instead. As with most hair accessories, there are a whole range of colours to choose from, so you can go for a totally natural, or a completely wild look.

Hair headband

Plaited Hair Band Image Source

Headbands have always been popular, with many children wearing them awkwardly to help tame a haggard fringe. Nowadays, however, you can actually get braided headbands that look like real hair. They simply go over your head to make it look like you have cleverly twisted a unique style. Whether this idea is wonderfully clever or just tacky is a matter of opinion, but there is no stopping the enthusiastic designers out there.

Twist ups

Twist Up Hair Piece Image Source

There is no shortage of crazy hear pieces and the twist up look is designed to give you a real posh up style in seconds. Simply attach it to your real hair, twist it up and you will look like you have spent hours crafting a “wonderful” look. Select your natural hair colour and the idea is that nobody will know you have anything but your own hair to flaunt.

Hair styles, accessories and wigs are hugely popular and are a major part of fashion. Whether you prefer the natural look or something more elaborate is up to you, but there is no shortage of weird and wacky products to try out.

How to Create a Perfect Holiday Party Look

The holidays are a perfect time of year to let the charm, colors and sparkle of the season spill over into your makeup, hair and personal style. Holiday parties and family gatherings are a great way to transform your look from the same old routine to festive. Here are a few suggestions.

Makeup

Christmas trees shouldn’t be the only things sparkling during the holidays. Add a little glamorous sparkle to your makeup. Dress up your eyes with a product that has subtle shimmer in it. The key is subtle. Avoid using products that are too glittery or shiny or you’ll run the risk of looking like a Halloween costume. Choose either an eye shadow or liquid eyeliner with sparkle to add a little glitz to your look. Complete the look with several coats of non-clumping mascara for thick, lush lashes.

A bold, red lip creates an instant sophisticated holiday party look. Red lips attract instant attention, so make sure to apply red lipstick to exfoliated and moisturized lips. Use a perfectly matching lip pencil to ensure a clean, crisp line and to avoid feathering. The general rule when using a bold lip is to keep the rest of your makeup soft and neutral. Apply eye shadow in neutral tones or simply line the eyes with eyeliner. For an old Hollywood look, apply false lashes to balance the drama of the bold lips.

A simple way to add luster to your face during the holidays is to apply a highlighter. Highlighters come in powder or liquid form. Apply highlighter as a final step along the cheek bones, brow bones and temples. For fair skin use a highlighter with pink tones. For olive or darker skin, use a highlighter in golden tones.

Hair

Make your hair the “mane” attraction at any holiday party with a fabulous hairstyle. If you normally wear your hair long and loose, try a classy updo, a sleek ponytail or messy bun. For a festive touch, add a sparkly hair accessory.

Similarly, if you have pin straight hair, set your hair in hot rollers or use a wide barrel curling iron to create loose waves. Whatever style you create, use a shine serum to tame flyaways and add glossy shine.

Fashion

Put away the snowman sweater and pull out an outfit that will impress. The holidays give you a great reason to amp up your style. Now is the time to incorporate color, shimmery pieces and bold pieces of jewelry. While wearing a little black dress is always a classic choice, add some glitz to this iconic look by slipping on some sparkling heels. While the colors red and green are synonymous with the holidays, go for a sophisticated look by wearing an outfit in gold, silver or winter white. For a more casual look, pair dressy black pants with a sequin top. Whatever you decide to wear, the most important part of any outfit are the accessories. From a bold cocktail ring, to long, layered necklaces, accessories transform any look into drab to fab in no time.

With Christmas now just around the corner, the party season is officially here – and most of us have at least one ‘do’ to go to. But finding that perfect outfit to wear can be something of a mission, as every girl knows.

It starts with a mental inventory of your wardrobe, wondering if there’s anything in there you can press into service. After all, Christmas shopping doesn’t leave much room in the budget for splurging on new clothes. But then, as you go through the options you realise: that doesn’t fit, you wore that one last year, you have no shoes to go with that one, and as for that one – well, what were you thinking??

There’s no getting away from it, it just has to be a new dress. And this is such a perfect time of year for party dress shopping. After all, the sparkly season is one of the few times you can justify an outfit that’s just a bit more eye-catching than usual…. and for many of us it may be the only time we’ll even contemplate wearing a dress. Whether it’s shiny satin, daring hemlines, sparkly sequins or sweeping empire lines, the perfect party dress will make your evening go with more of a bang.

1. Check out what the celebs are wearing
A good place to start is the celebrity style websites – check out what’s in style based on those in the know. Most celebrity style filters down to the high street pretty quickly, so what Alexa Chung and Kate Middleton are wearing to wow the photographers can usually be found on the high street at prices that won’t totally wreck your budget.

2. Think about your body shape and your colouring
Not all outfits suit every shape, and one of the biggest fashion mistakes is following the latest fads without having someone sanity-check whether that cherry red number works with your peachy skin (it won’t), and whether that clingy bandeau is just a tad too clingy (especially after a few mince pies). Different shaped dresses flatter different figures, depending on what you want to show off (and what you want to hide), so don’t buy without giving it some thought.

3. Go for something different
Buying a party dress should be a chance to try something new – so if you’ve got a similar piece in your wardrobe already, don’t buy it! The classic example is moving away from black. Yes, that little black dress is still a fashion favourite, but let’s look for something a bit more show-stopping this holiday season, shall we? You don’t have to go completely wild – just look for something you wouldn’t normally go for; try a different colour, different fabric or different shape.

4. Browse the fashion websites
Before you set out on foot, do yourself a favour and take a look at what’s available from the comfort of your sofa – starting with your favourite brands, and using some of the brilliant comparison sites to see what else is out there you wouldn’t normally find. But do remember – the photos show dresses on women with figures most of us can only dream of, so don’t forget to consider how it will actually look on you.

5. Hunt for EBay bargains
If budget is an issue or if your designer tastes aren’t matched by a suitably hefty paycheck, then EBay is a must for picking up party dress bargains. There are literally thousands available, most of them going for a song. Admittedly you can’t try on before you buy (usually a must, unless you’re an absolutely classic standard dress size), but if it doesn’t work out, you can always sell it on again.

6. Hit the high street
Of course, once you’ve done the research, nothing beats a good trip to the high street – you can touch, you can try, you can take a friend for that all important second opinion… and when you’re finished you can reward yourself with a glass of mulled wine in the pub before heading home with your sparkly new party dress.

Boots come in a plethora of styles and varieties that can be suited to each person’s budget and personality. Every woman should own a pair of boots because they are an essential component to a well-rounded winter wardrobe. Boots can be styled in a number of ways and can be paired with pants, skirts and dresses. Though they do tend to be pricey, most women can find a basic boot within a reasonable price range. If you can’t afford a pair of over-the-knee boots, save money and buy a similar pair of ankle boots instead. Or wait until the off-season to purchase your favorite equestrian or lace-up boots at a discount. If you’re looking to get a handle on which boots you should be sporting this season, familiarize yourself with the latest looks in Fall 2011 footwear.

Ankle Booties

In addition to being one of the most wearable shoe trends for fall and winter, ankle boots are often a less expensive boot option. When paired with legging, leather pants or skinny jeans, ankle booties can highlight the leg, drawing attention to your best assets.

Equestrian Boots

Equestrian boots may serve as a necessity for horse riders and equine lovers, but they’re a must-have item for boot-loving fashionistas. Equestrian boots are marked by their rounded toe, tall boot shaft and buckle details, which are usually made from brushed silver, pewter or brass metals. These boots are generally made of quality leather and can be purchased in black, brown or gray color schemes. These types of boots are a great option to wear with a leather or military-inspired jacket.

Over-the-Knee Boots

Over-the-knee boots are both a functional and super sexy boot choice. While tricky to wear without invoking Julia Roberts circa Pretty Woman, the over-the-knee boot can be properly styled for a chic and sophisticated appearance. Try pairing your over-the-knee book with a calf-length skirt for a modest approach. Or, if you want to be daring, wear your over-the-boots with leather pants or textured leggings. Over-the-knee boots can be quite the investment, so be sure to find them on sale at your favorite retail location or online.

Motorcycle Boots

Also inspired by the recent menswear tend, motorcycle boots have made a comeback for women as well as men. Biker boots are usually embellished with thicker soles, buckles, grommets, chains and other metal adornments. If you can’t imagine yourself in a combat boot, try borrowing from this style with a biker-inspired ankle bootie.

To-the-Knee Boots

Tall boots, or to-the-knee boots, are the perfect accessory for women who live in cold climates. When you purchase your to-the-knee-boot, be sure to select one made from quality materials such as suede or leather. Go for a pair in basic black, brown or gray and be sure to select a stacked heel instead of a skinny heel. If you’re looking for a basic boot, go with a simple design. If you want to jazz up your boot collection, opt for a Victorian-era lace up boot. While you might be inclined to purchase a boot with a stiletto heel, opt for a sturdier heel option to give yourself traction in the wintry weather.

Snow Boots

If you plan to engage in winter sports activities, be sure to have the proper footwear. For your next winter trip, bring along a pair of tall snow boots. Snow boots are heavy duty and superior to your standard tall boot in terms of function because they work overtime to keep your legs and feet warm in heavy snow. Many times, these types of shoes are made from suede and include a sheepskin or shearling lining for maximum comfort and warmth.
