Kronos Phyx (link is to previous review) is one of the best hair conditioners I have used. The leave-in overnight treatment is no greasy, does not wear off on pillows, and leave our hair feeling incredibly silky after your morning shampoo. It is truly lovely stuff! For awhile it was also kind of hard to find, but now Glow has it and, on top of it, you can get a free trial!

I am a big deep conditioner fan. If you have color treated hair or dry hair, deep conditioning once a week or so can make all the difference in getting smooth silky hair. The article below, syndicated from Total Beauty, provides some great information on the best deep conditioners based on their reader’s rankings.

A couple of items on the list that I particularly agree with are the Aussie Three Minute Miracle, which is also incredibly affordable and available at your local drug or grocery store and Redken Smooth Down Butter Treat, which I think is the best for taming frizzies and creating smooth, straight looks. I love how soft it makes my hair feel too.  It too isn’t all that hard to find. You can read my previous review of the Redken Smooth Down Hair products here: Redken Smooth Down.

Although not on the list, I highly recommend protein treatments that include animal protein once every week or two as well. I use Joico K-Pak Deep Penetrating Reconstructor, which is one of the few easy to find deep protein treatments. Note: Don’t use protein treatments that contain animal derived protein more than once every week or so. They do great things for the hair in moderation, but too much use can weaken the hair over time.

There are also a bunch conditioners on the list that I haven’t tried, and I suppose that I should! Anyway, take a look and see if you can find the best hair conditioner for you.

Have you tried sulfate free shampoo? If not, consider giving sulfate free hair care a chance, especially if you have color treated hair.

One of the main ingredients in most shampoo is Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS), or Sodium Lauryl Ether (aka Sodium Laureth Sulfate) (SLES). These are surfactants, which in basic terms is a detergent, and it helps shampoo lather well. Sure, a nice lather always seems nice, but it isn’t without problems, and that has led to an increase in the number of sulfate free hair products on the market. There are a number of issues with Sulfates as a shampoo ingredient:

• It can aggravate acne and can act as an irritant.
• It can be hard on hair color
• It has been linked to cancer, although only in much larger amounts than what you would find in your hair products
• It you do keratin hair straightening treatments, it will decrease the length of time that your treatment remains active

In my case, I became interested in finding a sulfate free shampoo because of acne concerns. Then, after trying a few, I found that my color generally lasted longer as well. I also found that sulfate free hair care items worked just as well as their high lather cousins and, with the advent of a couple of drugstore brands jumping on the sulfate free bandwagon, sulfate free hair care doesn’t have to be expensive.

Affordable Sulfate Free Hair Care

In the drugstore, look for the relatively new L’Oreal EverPure Line, which is a full line of sulfate free hair products with various shampoos and conditioners available. I found the L’Oreal EverPure line to be good quality and, at around $7, the price is quite affordable. I am currently using the volumizing products and find that they do indeed add good volume, while taking care of my oily scalp, yet leaving my hair quite soft.

In addition, you can look for products from Renpure Organics.  Also running in the $7 price range, RenPure is an organic line with sulfate free shampoo and conditioner. The shampoo has a nice feel to it and the conditioner leaves my hair soft.  I initially purchased my set of RenPure at Walgreens, but later had a hard time finding it there.

Premium Sulfate Free Hair Products

At the higher end, there are a number of brands that leave SLS or SLES out of their hair products. My favorite by far is the Pureology Line. Pureology simply has the best hair products I have ever used.  They feel great, smell great, preserve color, and leave the hair feeling soft and smooth. They are not my everyday choice, however, simply because that quality comes with a high price tag. Besides being the best, Pureology is also one of the most expensive lines out there, with a regular to smallish sized bottle of shampoo running about $28-30.

Like Purelogy, Alterna provides sulfate free hair care in their hemp line of products. Alterna also provides high quality items at an equally high price point.

For a bit more affordable option in the premium brands, take a look at the Tigi Bedhead Superstar hair care line.  These sulfate free shampoo and conditioner products also provide quality cleansing, but the price is in the more reasonable $15 range.

There are many more premium brands that offer sulfate free products. Rather than try to list them all here, I picked out the ones that I feel provide the most quality and are relatively easy to find. You can locate premium items at  Ulta stores and I have also provided some shopping boxes below.

I have long been a fan of Garnier hair products. In fact, I began using Garnier Fructis shampoo before it was available in North America after coming across it while visiting Spain. Before I switched to highlighting my hair, I also used Garnier’s semi-permanent colour (washes out over 28 shampoos) because I liked the choice of shades and the ease of use. I very well might switch back at some point because I like the flexibility of using semi-permanent colour and the New Garnier HerbaShine colour certainly is intriguing!

Garnier’s new semi-permanent haircolour, Garnier HerbaShine, is focused on colour that leaves the hair soft and shiny. Fortified with bamboo extract, HerbaShine strengthens coloured hair for longer lasting colour and leaves it soft and extra shiny.  The beauty of semi-permanent colour is that, because it is often formulated with conditioning agents, it can leave your hair looking and feeling better than it did before you used the colour.

The colour is ammonia-free, easy to use, and takes only 10 minutes. Because the colour is not permanent, it will slowly wash out over 28 shampoos—a nice option if you are like me and tend to get frequent urges to change your haircolour! This also avoids there ever being an obvious root line.  Semi-permanent colour is great for covering gray, and Garnier HerbaShine will cover about 70% of it.  The package includes gloves and a package of conditioner which, by the way, is a pretty good conditioning treatment!

HerbaShine is available in 18 shades ranging from blondes, to browns, to red tones, with all producing particularly shiny colour. Look for it in drugstores and at big box retailers.

I love this straightening brush! The HairArt Duet Brush has ceramic plates that  will retain heat and provide shine while you used the brush and your hair dryer to straighten your hair.

I found that the brush was quite easy to use—easier than a flat iron. Just like using a flat iron, it can get a bit tricky in back, but it was much easier for me to use in back than a flat iron is. I like the look better than that of a straight iron too. The brush allows you to straighten your hair without getting everything so stick straight that the hair is just flat. Basically, you can still have some bounce and body. The brush is also pretty effective for flipping ends up or under.

At $15, it is much cheaper than a flat iron as well!

Kate Winslet looked a beautiful as ever at the Golden Globes.

Celebrity makeup artist Jillian Dempsey did Lancôme ambassador Kate Winslet’s makeup.  Here is how:

Kate’s look was clean and luminous. Armani Luminous Silk Foundation showed off Kate’s naturally beautiful complexion. To create contoured cheekbones, Jillian used Avon Be Blushed in Blushing Nude and highlighted the cheeks with a brightener. Jillian Dempsey For Avon Professional Kohl Eye Liner in Navy played off the midnight hues of Kate’s dress. Several coats of Lancôme Hypnôse Mascara in Excessive Black really made Kate’s eyes pop. For Kate’s matte lip, which she requested, Jillian topped lip liner with Lancôme L’Absolu Rouge in Rich Cashmere for a soft, pretty finish.

For Kate Winslet’s hair, Renato Campora for Frederic Fekkai was inspired by the idea of a glamorous woman leaving her hotel room in a rush. He created a sexy, low chignon with an undone feel and lots of texture.  Here is how to get the look:

On wet hair Renato applied FEKKAI COIFF™ STRONG HOLD VOLUME MOUSSE mixed with FEKKAI ADVANCED™ BRILLIANT GLOSSING™ CREAM.  These two products together provide the right balance to create a texture that leaves the hair hydrated.  With the hair still wet, he created a side part and placed pins curls throughout the entire head and dried the hair with a diffuser. Once the hair was 80 percent dry, he removed the pin curls.  Renato used his fingers to produce texture and finished drying the hair with the diffuser. He then applied FEKKAI Salon Technician Color Care™ Anti-Fade Top Coat throughout the hair for shine.  Next, he softened the ends by using a curling iron. He then applied the FEKKAI Au Naturel Dry Shampoo all over the head to give the final look some modernity and volume. After that, Renato formed the chignon, by pulling the hair down into a low pony tail; he wrapped the rubber band around once and created a loop with the hair when you take it through the pony tail the second time. Campora used long hair pins to secure the pieces to the side and played with the texture to make the chignon. He left loose pieces in the front to frame and soften the face. This allows the hair in the front to blend with the chignon in the back perfectly, so there is no contrast.  Finally, he finished with FEKKAI Full Blown Volume™ Lifting Hairspray and dried with a diffuser to maintain the look.
