New Hair Technology: Remington Style and Shine Hair Dryer

Remington has long been a respected name in beauty and personal care appliances. They also have generally been a good source of decent quality, yet affordable, hair dryers and flat irons. That is an area that has seen quite a bit of new technology over recent years, with ionic and ceramic technology becoming the standard. Now the company is bringing out some additional new tricks.

Remington Style and Shine Hair Dryer

Around the end of February, Remington is releasing the Style and Shine Hair Dryer and Style and Shine Flat Iron Straightener. Both of these products include the ability to infuse the hair with a very fine mist of shine enhancing moisturizers such as avocado oil with vitamins A, E, and D to help tame the frizzies and condition the hair. The idea is wonderful. When the hair is heated, the cuticle expands and will absorb products better. Heat also isn’t the best thing for your hair. So combining treatment with heat styling allows for the best use of the conditioning product, while also helping to protect.

Here is how it works: The dryer comes with a cartridge containing the conditioning and shine enhancing treatment. The cartridge snaps into appliance and a button is used to control when it is applied, and how much. The dryer can also be used without the cartridge in place. It comes with two approximately 30 use cartridges which will also be available for sale in two cartridge packs.

The straightener is a bit different. It has ceramic plates with porous properties that have been infused with a blend of conditioners and avocado oil that evenly emit during styling.

I gave the hair dryer a try and have so far been pretty happy with it. First off, all new tricks aside, the Remington Style and Shine Dryer is a good basic hair dryer. It uses ionic and ceramic technology, and has three separate speed and heat settings. Without using the oil mist, it did a perfectly fine job of quickly drying my hair without causing any serious frizzies.

When the oil most is added, then things get interesting! Before you get worried about an oil slick, rest assured that the mist is very, very fine. In fact, it is nearly impossible to detect unless you spray some on a tissue to verify that it is working. So as long as it is not overused, it won’t leave the hair greasy. With that said, it is possible to overuse it and it takes a bit of experimenting to find the right amount–something the product literature makes note of. I found that if I sprayed it on each strand while round brushing, that my hair got too weighed down. I also decided to keep it away from my roots which can get a bit oily on their own. But when I mist the oil on my ends when my hair is almost dry and run a brush through a few times while misting at that stage, I end up with wonderfully shiny and soft hair. It seems to tame my winter frizzies very well when used that way.

Overall, the Style and Shine Dryer is a product that I recommend. Even as just a basic dryer, it is a good value and if you have dry hair that could use some taming and shine, the oil mist feature is a neat addition.

Remington’s Style and Shine products will be available in February 2008 in select stores and at mass retailers by April. Each appliance retails at $49.99, cartridge refills are $9.99.

Kenra Hydrating Hair Products

Although I have several brands that I love for hair care, I keep experimenting whenever it comes time to purchase more hair products. One of my recent tries involved products from Kenra. As a bit of background, I have fairly long, dry, highlighted hair, that tends to be fine and flyaway. So it needs moisture and tangles easily.

Kenra Hair Kit Shampoo Conditioner Hair Spray
I’m quite happy with the results that I got from KENRA Moisturizing Shampoo Hydrating Formula for Added Moisture. Kenra’s moisturizing shampoo feels great with a very silky, rich lather and does not contribute to tangling in any manner. Another plus, and something that I think is needed for a higher price product to get my recommendation, is that only a small amount of the shampoo is needed to achieve a good amount of lather. Kenra fit that bill quite nicely, providing plenty of lather with a surprising small amount of product. This will easily become of the shampoos in my regular rotation.

KENRA Moisturizing Conditioner Deep Penetrating Formula for Maximum Hydration of Dry, Brittle & Coarse Hair
is an OK conditioner. I would rave about it, except that it didn’t quite meet the needs of my hair type. The conditioner itself smells great (coconut scent), and like the shampoo, it provides some heavy duty moisture without using a ton of product. But it does not detangle really well until the rinsing stage. Basically, the conditioner has more of a thicker gel type of consistency that is not real conducive to running fingers through and detangling unless water is added. Once I got to rinsing, it detangled fairly nicely, but with my long hair, I need more serious detangling action. However, my hair did look and feel incredible after it was dry when using this product. So, while this one isn’t the perfect conditioner for me, I think it would be ideal for women with shorter, and perhaps coarser hair. Lacking experience with coarser hair, I’m not 100% sure though.

So overall I was happy, but will likely not purchase the conditioner again simply because of my hair type.  Kenra is also on the expensive side. So if you would to try several Kenra products at once, check out the KENRA Gift Set Promotion (pictured), which will save you 20%.

Redken Smooth Down Conditioning Products

Redken Smooth Down ConditionerConsider this: Color treated, fine but also thick, dry hair. What should go on that? I tend to always be looking for the perfect set of products. The Redken Smooth Down line is pretty darn close!

I have been using Redken Smooth Down Conditioner for about a month now. Previously, I was using Redken Extreme, KMS, and/or Schwartzkopf Bonacure. Among those, this is now my favorite everyday conditioner. The conditioner is fairly thick, which I like for detangling. It also seems to provide more overall moisture and silkiness to my hair than the others. I still love Bonacure products and would normally say that Redken Smooth Down is a tie with Bonacure’s Repair Rescue, but Redken wins out because it is cheaper. I bought mine at in the extra large size, which is a great way to save even more on the product.

For deep treatment, Redken Smooth Down Butter Treat Deep Conditioner is another nice product. Comparable to Bonacure’s deep conditioner, Butter Treat does a nice job of super moisturizing the hair and leaving it incredibly soft. I have been using this about once per week and loving it!

Redken Smooth Down Leave in Detangler is a good companion product. It does a decent job detangling and acts as a bit of a heat protectant and leave in conditioner. I have to admit though that I like Redken 01 Anti-Frizz Polishing Milk better for that though.

The set can be completed with Redken Smooth Down Shampoo. I have not tried that yet, but plan to purchase it when my other shampoos run out.

Rene Furterer Fioravanti Silkening Conditioner

Rene Furterer Fioravanti Silkening Hair ConditionerRene Furterer Paris Fioravanti Anti Frizz Silkening Conditioner advertised extreme shine for unruly hair. It does a pretty good job.

I have color treated hair (but lets just pretend that there is no gray there and that I really am a blonde).  So I am always on the lookout for good conditioners. This one does an incredible job of adding shine, and it does indeed leave the hair feeling very silky.  The conditioner has no particular scent and is medium to on the thick side in consistency.

My only complaint is that I didn’t feel like it detangled as much as I would like. I have fine hair, and the simple act of shampooing often puts it in knots. This product didn’t quit detangle those knots as well as other conditions do for me. But the shine afterward from this conditioner certainly made me willing to keep using it!

There is also a matching Rene Furterer Fioravanti Silkening Shampoo .

Aveda Color Conserve Shampoo and Conditioner

Aveda Color Conserve Shampoo and ConditionerI recently had my hair highlighted and lowlighted, so I thought I would try out some color friendly products. Aveda Color Conserve Shampoo and Aveda Color Conserve Conditioner turned out to be quite nice products.

The shampoo has a very light lather and is moisturizing, so I didn’t run into issues with tangling. With lavender and peppermint, it also smells quite nice. If you like a big thick lather though, this one doesn’t give that.

The conditioner smells even better than the shampoo. The Aveda conditioner is medium body and does a pretty good job of detangling and leaving the hair soft and manageable. It also rinses clean quite well. I have no complaints on this one. I liked it quite a bit.

I haven’t used these enough to give definitive results on how well they help preserve color, but my initial one week use of them has been good. Often, if I use a harsher shampoo, I will notice some fading of the color right away. So far I have noticed none with the Aveda products.

The Aveda color conserve products won an Allure Magazine reader’s choice award. They are also priced fairly well for their quality. So I definitely recommend them as good value products.

Redken Extreme Shampoo and Conditioner

Redken Extreme ShampooRedken Extreme Shampoo and Redken Extreme Conditionerare favorites of my hair dresser. Initially drawn to the fruity smell emanating from them when I got my hair done, I decided to buy a couple of bottles when I saw them on sale at the local Ulta store.

The extreme line from Redken is intended for “distressed” hair. As a result, these are moisturizing and fortifying products. The shampoo is lovely stuff. It has a rich, moisturizing lather that leaves no tangles and smells incredible. The conditioner is also quite good, but I prefer something a bit thicker or heavier at times. My hair dresser swears by both products for anyone with dry or color treated hair. I did not notice any problems with color stripping with these, and generally found them to be a pretty nice set of daily use hair products.

I have found the Redken products much cheaper online than in the stores.  Ulta will occasionally run specials of buy one get one free in their stores, plus they carry the good value extra large bottles. So that is something to watch for in order to get a bargain.

Schwarzkopf BC Bonacure Moisture Kick and Rescue Repair Hair Products

Bonacure BC Moisture Kick SprayA hair product that I can no longer live without, and one that belongs on my favorite products lists is Schwarzkopf Bonacure Moisture Kick Leave in Spray Conditioner. My hairdresser swears by this spray as well. Initially, the spray is separated so it needs a good shake. Then it is sprayed on wet hair as a leave in conditioner. This stuff rocks! As the name states, it gives dry hair a moisture kick and it really helps with detangling. It also acts a heat protecting spray. I find that whenever I use this, which is basically all the time now, that my hair is left incredibly soft and frizz free. A bottle also lasts for quite some time, so it is well worth the price. I would be severely traumatized if this product were to disappear.

I have also at times been using some other Schwarzkopf Bonacure products, and honestly think that a person can’t go wrong with this brand. Everything they make is a quality product. Schwarzkopf Bonacure Moisture Kick Shampoo is a rich moisturizing shampoo that leaves hair soft. There is no tangling with this stuff and it rinses clean. I tend to pair the shampoo with Schwarzkopf Bonacure Rescue Repair Conditioner. This conditioner is good for dry, damaged, or color treated hair and it helps keep everything in top notch condition. It also rinses well and does a great job at preventing tangles. Once each week or so, I add one of the Bonacure treatment products. Right now I have been using Schwarzkopf Bonacure Moisture Kick Treatment, which is really just a deeper conditioning treatment, to add even more moisture to the hair. I have also previously reviewed Schwarzkopf Bonacure BC SMooth Express, which is another treatment product that leaves the hair incredibly soft.

If you are in the market for quality hair products give Bonacure a try. Especially look at the Moisture Kick spray! I have bought Bonacure products online at Amazon.com. I also have bought them at Ulta stores. Bonacure is also sold in some hair salons.
