Makeup Wars: Best BB Cream

I love BB creams and have a number of favorites. Currently, I often find myself wearing Skin 79 products, in part because I got a kit with samples of 4 of their different creams. At $15 for this sample kit, it is a great value way to try a few quality BB creams. I got my kit at YesStyle, which is my absolute favorite store for Asian makeup and fashion (they are awesome for cool handbags and shoes too)!

Skin 79 BB Cream Kit

The BB creams in the kit are:

Skin 79 Super BB (VIP Gold): Formulated for anti-aging.

Super BB Plus (Hot Pink): formulated for skin brightening and hyperpigmentation.

BB Diamond Prestige: A BB cream formulated for oily skin.

BB Diamond Pearl. Another good one for oily skin with light illuminators.

Skin 79 is a Korean company and these BB creams are the real deal, as opposed to the many drugstore brands popping up that claim BB in their title, but really are just tinted moisturizers. A real BB cream will be thicker and can often be worn alone in place of foundation with fairly decent coverage. It normally will also include treatment actives to address various skin concerns. The idea is to have a multi-function product all in one package.

Skin79’s products are tinted and they blend well, making it easy match your skin if you are in the fair to light range. Basically, once blended, they tend to look OK across several skin tone ranges. Where this brand it doesn’t work well though is for those with darker skin. The Asian companies have not done a lot to cater to that unfortunately. The US companies have done a bit better with that, but their products are often inferior. Look at the Bobbi Brown BB cream as an option for medium to dark skin (although they still lack a very dark shade) . The creams wear OK with my oily skin, but I do often apply a mattifier first, even with the creams that are meant for oily skin, as they still tend to leave me shiny at times.

Skin 79 BB Creams

Below are Skin79 swatches in the following order: Super BB (VIP Gold), Super BB Plus (Hot Pink), BB Diamond Prestige, and BB Diamond Pearl. All of these blend to match my skin pretty well despite looking different right out of the tube.

For example, here it is after I blended my arm. I was left with a smooth, skin tone matching surface. Coverage is quite good from them too.

Here is a goofy self portrait. I’m wearing BB Diamond Pearl, which is the lightest of the four. I put powder over it, which mattes it up more, but I think if you can avoid the powder (ie you have normal or dry skin), you can get a better look from it.

Stila Stay All Day Foundation Review

Stila Stay All Day Foundation is a liquid foundation and concealer combo that also comes with an application brush. I was sent a set to try in Fair and I came away quite happy with the product.

Stila Stay All Day Foundation

The foundation is packaged in a glass bottle with the concealer in the cap.

The concealer cap also has a mirror, which I like.

Stila Foundation and Concealer

The foundation applied quite well for me using a stippling brush. In particular, it buffed out really nice. I did not use the brush that came with the set for foundation application. It really is too small for that, but it is rather effective as a concealer brush. The foundation feels silky and indeed did wear all day for me. The concealer is also a quality item, with good coverage and wear time. At $44 for the set, it is one of the pricier foundations, but once the concealer and brush are considered with that, it is a decent value.

My one complaint about the product, which might be a blessing in disguise later is this spoon on the bottle end of the cap. It is rather goopy and drippy when removed from a full bottle. However, I suspect I will appreciate it when the bottle is nearly empty. So I suppose I shouldn’t complain much!

Stila Stay All Day Foundation Cap

Here I am wearing shade Fair of the Stila Stay All Day Foundation and Concealer which is their level 2 shade. I am quite pale and Fair was about right for me. I normally wear level 2 or 3 of most foundations and have fairly neutral skin tones. For example I usually can wear MAC NC 20 and NW 20 equally well.

Youngblood Creme Powder Foundation Review

Youngblood Mineral Radiance Creme Powder Foundation rather impressed me. In fact, I would say that it is my new favorite in the cream to powder area. I was sent a sample in the shade Neutral to try and came away quite happy.

Youngblood Mineral Foundation

The foundation comes with an application sponge that works just fine. I actually applied mine a bit on the heavy side with the sponge and then buffed it out with a dense stippling brush (the new Urban Decay Optical Blurring Brush). The foundation applies smoothly and it blends and buffs wonderfully. I have taken issue with some cream to powder formulas in that regard, so the nice application was definitely noted. Coverage was sheer to medium.

The foundation also wore well. Initially, I felt it was perhaps settling into my fine lines and wrinkled areas a bit too much, but I let it sit for a few minutes before using powder, which seemed to do the trick. It just needed to get settled.   Even though this is a “cream to powder” formula, I did use a finishing powder.  The foundation wore well all day, so I was quite happy with it.

Here is a swatch of the Neutral shade on my hand.

I usually wear shades that are right in between fair and light. Neutral worked quite well for me.  Overall, I give the product a big thumbs up!
