What are Beauty Bloggers’ favorite products for summer? Find out with our Top Ten lists! Here are my top items in summer beauty products.

Summer Beauty Essentials

(1) Sunscreen. The top most needed item for summer! Looking for a good one, check out our recent Makeup Wars post on our favorite summer sunscreens!

(2) Waterproof Makeup: Nobody likes to sweat off their makeup, so give something like the Tarte Aqualilies Palette a try!

(3) Texturizing Spray: For beachy waves, use a texturizing spray, such as Alterna Ocean Waves on damp hair, then scrunch. You will end up with natural looking summer waves.

(4) SPF Lip Gloss: Don’t forget your lips! one of My favorite ways to wear gloss with SPF is with Murad Pomegranate Lip Protector.

(5)  A Big Beach Bag: Everyone needs something big a waterproof for carrying their summer gear. Check out Hayden Reis for some gun beach bags! I was sent a bag to try and it was sturdy, waterproof, and fun looking!

(6) Summer Nail Polish: Pick out some fun pastels, pinks, corals, and glitters for your summer nails. Use a sampler such as as the Sephora by OPI Life’s a Beach kit and do each nail in a different shade!

(7) A Floppy Hat. I love my floppy hat in summer! This Kate Spade Straw Hat is super cute!

(8) Ped Egg. As a runner with terrible feet, I need to do some serious callus removal for summer. The Ped Egg is cheap, easy to use, and super effective.

(9) Sunglasses: Get yourself a pair or two of big sunglasses in fun patterns of shades. At Nordstrom, you can sort for sunglasses by face shape, which is a useful feature!

(10) Bronzer: Look for a long wear bronzer that won’t melt in the heat. Too Faced Endless Summer 16 Hour Bronzer is perfect!

Makeup Wars: Our Favorite Sunscreens

Summer is just around the corner, making sunscreen more important than ever! I have different favorites based on different uses. Here they are.

(1) For Daily Use: For daily use, I like to layer Estee Lauder Day Wear moisturizer, SPF 50, under a foundation that also has SPF. Since I often wear powder foundation, this gives me several layers of protection that often use different sunscreen ingredients. Plus Daywear is a nice light and fresh smelling daily moisturizer that works for most skin types.

(2) For Touch Ups Over Makeup: Many sunscreens break down quickly in sunlight, so they need to be reapplied fairly often. Doing that over makeup can be tricky, and that is where powder sunscreen comes in handy. Colorscience Sunforgettable comes in a tube with a built in brush for easy application over makeup. This is also a physical blocking sunscreen, so it won’t break down in sunlight the way chemical sunscreens do. I almost always have a tube of this in my purse in the summer. I originally got this as a press sample and have repurchased it multiple times.

(3) For Running: I am a distance runner and so I need a powerful sweatproof sunscreen when I am running. My favorite for this is Mission Sunscreen, which is designed with athletes in mind. It stays put and doesn't seem to cause breakouts for me, which some of the other waterproof/sweatproof sunscreens do. This is another item I first got as a press sample and then repurchased.

(4) For My Lips: Don’t forget your lips! They need sunscreen too! Just as I do for running, I also often lean to Mission for this. Mission Lip Balm is a great sport lip balm that wears long and has SPF 15 protection.

The Evolving Beauty Routine

Just the other day something amazing happened. I got carded, and they meant it, and I am 45! I can’t remember the last time that happened and it made my day! These days, I am unfortunately more aware than ever that aging is happening and my beauty routine is evolving with it. Here is a look at how my routine has evolved through the years.

The Teen Years

Oh to be a teen again with smooth and even skin. Well, wait, it wasn’t so sooth and even actually. I do remember teen acne. But I was pretty lucky back then. I could get by with a bit of basic acne treatment for breakouts. In hindsight though, I wish I had regularly worn sunscreen. Some of those aging signs that I see now could have been delayed! Back then all of the double duty products with sunscreen that you see now were not available. I don’t think regular makeup even had sunscreen in it at that time. Plus, I was rather naive about protecting my skin.

My 20’s

I had great skin in my 20’s. By my late 20’s, I also began to appreciate it by using makeup with sunscreen and wearing moisturizer at night. It was a good time, but changes were coming!

My 30’s

My 30s saw the first signs of sun damage. I developed melasma in spots and began a serious skin care routine in earnest. Sunscreen and products with antioxidants became part of my daily routine, and I sought out skin brightening and anti-aging products both to protect my skin and to treat discoloration.  I learned a lot during that time, and came to seriously appreciate anything that would block UV rays.

My 40’s

I am now 45 and seeing a whole new host of issues. My melasma has faded quite a bit with years now of religious use of sunscreen, but fine lines and wrinkles are starting to show up and I am developing some redness that could be rosacea. My routine now includes more anti-aging products, and I look for items that can do double or triple duty by including treatment actives, a tint for a more even appearance, and sunscreen in one. The advent of BB creams, and now a CC cream, has been wonderful for that. Why buy multiple products when you can get them all in one?

I am also exploring technology for skin care more and more by looking into home laser and led light devices and by reading up on the latest products and ingredients. I love all of the innovations that are coming out in skin care! Hopefully, if I stick to a good routine, I can still fool a clerk into asking for identification a few more times!
