Abreva Conceal Patch Review and Giveaway

The Abreva Conceal Patch is a non-medicated clear patch for covering up cold sores.  It is a unique product aimed at making it easier to cover up a cold sore by providing a smooth surface for makeup.  At the same time, the patch is breathable, so it lets air in but also protects the area. I previously reviewed the Abreva Patch by putting it over a blemish and was happy to try it again because I wanted to try it on my lips and also try something new with how I apply it and put makeup over it.

The patch itself comes with a tab that you use to place it. After pressing for 20-30 seconds or so, you carefully peel off the tab, leaving the patch on your lips.

Here is an important trick I learned with this. If the patch is too big for the area you are covering, try cutting it in half! I cut mine in half and lined the straight edge up with the outside edge of my lip. By doing that, it covered the area I was aiming for perfectly, without showing over the side of the lip.   I then applied a bright and fairly matte lipstick over it, which I think covers the patch better than a shimmer type of lipstick.

Below is not the most flattering angle of me, and I have very little to no makeup on (gasp!), but I wanted to show the result. Can you see the patch? It is on my upper lip (toward the bottom of the upper lip), on the left side. I could barely see it in person just a few feet from the mirror. I don't think I would spot it in the photo if I didn't know where it was and wasn't looking for it.

The patch worked wonderfully for me when I tried it this way. If you don’t need to cover any skin, I recommend it. If you need to cover skin, leave the patch whole and apply a thick concealer over the skin part with a soft brush and then powder over that. It will still show a bit, but it is better looking than a cold sore.

Abreva Cold Sore Patch Concealer

Abreva has a new conceal patch kit meant for covering up cold sores. It is an interesting product that seeks to solve the common problem of trying to use makeup to cover up a cold sore. The patch also lets air in, yet protects the area. It is non-medicated and designed to last for up to 8 hours . I didn’t have a cold sore at the time I tested the product, so I  tried it out on a blemish.

The kit comes with a box of patches, a mirror, and a concealer brush, which I noted is a pretty decent quality brush.

Here are the application steps:

  • Wash your face with a mild soap, and use a fresh towel to pat your cold sore and the neighboring area dry.
  • Open Conceal packaging and remove the contents inside.
  • Peel back the paper tab marked in red with the number “1” (avoid touching the sticky part underneath by holding on to the small rectangular tab).
  • Continue to hold the rectangular tab and peel back the other paper tab, marked in blue with the number “2”.
  • While looking in a mirror, place the round patch over the cold sore.
  • Press down lightly on the center of the patch and hold the patch in place for 15-20 seconds to make sure it sticks to on top of your cold sore.
  • Gently pull away the applicator tab, at a slight angle away from your face. Voila! Conceal is in place.
  • Apply makeup on top of Conceal to ensure that the cold sore blends in with the rest of your lips.

Keep in mind that the product really is meant for use on the lips and I think it works better there because it can be covered up with lipstick. the blemish below my lip is what I decided to cover.

The patch applies with a little tab. You must press it firmly on the skin far at least 15 seconds. I gave mine about 30 seconds for good measure.

Next, the tab is carefully pulled off.  What is left behind is a thin clear patch which provides a smooth surface for makeup. I applied concealer and makeup over it, but as I noted earlier, this really is meant for use on the lips and lipstick would cover it better.

The patch smoothes and protects the area. It is also comfortable to wear and there are no side effects. I really didn’t notice any sensation from it while wearing it as it is very thin and flexible. Again, using it on the lips would be less noticeable, plus with lipstick over it I think it would look much better than a cold sore without a patch.   Also, Abreva suggests applying a little bronzer to any portion of the patch on the skin if it appears too light, and I didn’t try that. In hindsight, I think I would have used my thicker foundation to cover it more and maybe tried the bronzer trick as well. Cutting the patch to make it smaller could be useful as well.
