Getting Feet Ready for Summer. A Look at Profoot, Lac-hydrin Five, Skin Actives Scientific, and Dr. Scholl’s

My feet are in pretty bad shape. Skating has been hard on them and I always had issues with calluses anyway. This year I have a bunch of cute new sandals and I am determined to get my feet looking good for summer. I started about two weeks ago with a combination of products and have had great success.I have been using a combination of moisturizers: One is Profoot Care Heel Rescue Superior Moisturizing Foot Cream. I initially got a sample of this cream in the Beauty Buyble Book and Samples and really like it. It does a good job of penetrating the very dry skin and smoothing things out. It also is quite affordable. A related product that I haven’t tried, but am interested in is the Profoot Care Heel Rescue, Intensive Overnight Foot Repair.

Right now, I generally use the Profoot in the morning. At night, I use a lactic acid product to both moisturize and help remove the calluses. My long time favorite for this is Lac-hydrin Five Moisturizing Lotion. Lac-hydrin does an excellent job when it comes to moisturizing. With a good amount of lactic acid, it also helps exfoliate very dry skin pretty well.

After I rub a good amount of Lac-hydrin into my calluses, I have been following it up with a coating of Skin Actives Scientific foot mask. Skin Actives is a great site/company for purchasing individual active ingredients and they have an active forum where information and recipes can be found. I will write more about their products in the future. I have been enjoying the foot mask and find that it adds quite a bit to my callus killing routine. It is a rather thick, and slightly oily moisturizing concoction that I find bumps up the level of softening of my dry skin. Unfortunately, Skin Actives appears to have stopped actively selling their foot mask, although anyone interested can likely find a recipe for it in their forums. A recent email newsletter from them also mentioned that it would remain available as a forum special there.

Once I have my feet pretty well gooped up, I slip on a pair of socks and leave them on until everything absorbs into my skin. Something I would love to get are the Bliss Softening Socks, but I haven’t quite been able to bring myself to splurge on them. So for now plain old socks have to do.

After all that moisture, it becomes time to exfoliate. So, during my morning shower, I have been working on the calluses with a Dr. Scholl’s Callus Reducer. It is quite comfortable to use and works very well. I was actually surprised at how little effort it takes and how quickly it gets rid of the built up dry skin.

After only two weeks I have managed to get rid of almost all of my calluses. The few tough remnants are coming along as well. My feet should be good in another week or so. I figure if this process is working for my horrible feet, it will work for anyone!

Vita Amazonia Skin Care: DMAE and Matrixyl Creams

I recently had the pleasure of trying a pair of Vita Amazonia Products. These products from Brazil have been quite popular there, and I have generally seen good comments about the company and their products on various beauty sites.I particularly loved the Vita Amazonia Revitalizing Creme with DMAE 5%. There are various views on the actual effectiveness of DMAE as illustrated by this article. One thing of note about the Vita Amazonia product is the high percentage of it at 5%. The product is also formulated with matrixyl, which also has reports of positive effects on the skin that are backed by some product sponsored studies. I was unable to determine the amount of matrixyl in the product.

Whether the general hype about these compounds is true or not, I can’t really say. But what I can say is that the Vita Amazonia DMAE cream is wonderful. It feels great, it moisturizes very well, and I saw a noticeable difference in my skin immediately after using it. As a nighttime moisturizer, it had the thicker consistency that my slightly dry skin likes, yet it absorbed very well. No leftover greasiness with this stuff! The results were immediate too. My skin really did look firmer and felt great each morning after I used it. I scraped the little sample tub I had dry and am planning to purchase a full size product. The only downside is the cost. At around $85, it is a bit expensive, and I question whether the cost is necessary since the ingredients are not necessarily all that expensive. But I sure do love the stuff! This honestly could be the perfect night cream for me!

I also tried the Vita Amazonia Renewal Creme Gel. Although labeled as a gel, this is really a day lotion containing matrixyl that felt comfortable and did a pretty good job moisturizing. I was happy with this product, and its price is much better than that of the night cream. But since I generally only use day creams that contain SPF, which this product lacks, I don’t know that I would purchase it.

Finally, a product that I did not try but am curious about, is the Vita Amazonia Eye Gel. The combination of the ingredients of isoflavon, liquorice and asafetida in this gel interest me. If anyone out there has tried it, let me know what you thought of it!

Review: Lip Mints

Over the weekend, I tried LipMints, which came as a sample in my Beauty Buyble, Book and Samples. Boy do I love this product! Lip Mints are lightweight, mint flavored, lip glosses that have really good staying power. I found that the tint with this had higher pigment and lasted longer than many other glosses and the mint flavor and tingle is an added bonus. They seem to often be sold out of half of the colors online and are only available in limited stores. They often are a bit cheaper when bought through Amazon.com. I love, love, love this stuff!

The Beauty Buyble: Book and Samples

Today I opened up my book/package of The Beauty Buyble: The Best Beauty Products of 2007. This is a rather fun box consisting of a book, some advertisements and coupons, including a coupon for a free magazine subscription, a package of beauty product samples, and some shredded pink paper paper (I might actually reuse the pink paper). Full price for the package is 19.95 at stores such as Barnes and Noble. Amazon.com has it for $13.57. I imagine that as the year goes on, it could show up on the Barnes and Noble sales rack as well, which a great way to get books at discount prices.

The book, written by Paula Conway and Maureen Regan, is fine. I didn’t‘ love it, but didn’t dislike it either. It rates, in the author’s opinions, the best products in a number of categories covering hair, makeup, skincare and body care. Within each category several items are listed so that varying price ranges are covered. Generally there is a high, medium and low price item in each category, but some categories have more or less. Some categories also include an “outrageous” price item. Each product description is fairly short, so the information is not particularly in depth, but that also allows for many categories and products to be covered. In between the product listings are beauty tips from a variety of professionals. If the book stood alone, I don’t know that I would pay for it, not because there is anything wrong with it, but simply because I don’t have a real need for it. But when combined with the samples, I think it was worth the purchase.

The sample pack included the following: MD Skincare Maximum Moisture Treatment, Freeze 24/7 Lip Plumper, Cetaphil Cleanser, E.L.F. Brightening Eye Liner in black, Soft Lips Lip Balm, Biosilk Shampoo, Nivea Moisturizing Cream, Schwartzkopf Bonacure Smooth Express Hair Conditioner, Profoot Heal Rescue Moisturizing Foot Cream, Bananaboat Sport Sunscreen and Kid’s Sunscreen, Borba Skin Balance powder drink mix, 3 types of Vitabath, Lipmints lipgloss, Yu-Be Moisturizing skin cream, Jelly Bath hand soak, Cat Cosmetics lip pencils in naked lip (note, I was supposed to also get a Cat Cosmetics eye pencil, but got two lip pencils instead), NYC Pencil and Pout in ruby duet, Canyon Ranch cards with various beauty tips, Chupa Chups Watermelon Lip Balm, Maybelline Moisture Extreme lipstick, a ten issue subscription to Looking Good Now Magazine, some coupons, and a DHC catalog with eleven samples.

Among the samples, I am particularly excited to try the Yu-Be cream, the Schwartzkopf Bonacure conditioner, and the DHC products because it has been some time since I gave DHC some thought and I am interested in their olive oil cleansers.

Overall, this is about the entire package: The book has some fun tips and is giving me ideas for products to try. And I just plain love product samples! So generally, I think the whole package was a fun purchase and worth the price.

On a side note: If you like sampling products, another item of interest is the New Beauty Test Tube.
