The Top 15 Beauty Products of 2010

best beauty productrs Below is my list of top products that I tried in 2010 with notes. All links are to the reviews.  You might also be interested in the Best of 2009, Best of 2008 and  Best of 2007 lists. These are in no particular order.

(1) Fiberwig Mascara: This is flat out the best tubing type mascara that I have tried and has become my daily mascara. Love it!

(2) Peter Thomas Roth Acne Spot Treatment: This is the best acne treatment I have ever used and is the only one that can clear up deep cystic acne for me in a matter of days.

(3) The Verseo eGlide: I am still in the process of testing this interesting permanent home hair removal device. So far, it appears to work, at least on facial hair and, at under $100, has a great price. It is a bit time consuming for use on legs, but readers report using it there too.

(4) The Personal Microderm: This home microdermabrasion device leaves skin feeling smooth and fresh, while allowing for treatment products to absorb better. I have noticed some lessening of melasma when using it and it has had a great effect on my acne.

(5) Physician’s Formula Healthy Wear: High SPF tinted moisturizer that actually provides some cover, and a high SPF powder, both at very affordable prices, make these items must have summer products. I actually wear mine year round too.

(6) Votre Vu Lip Balm and Hand Creme Duette: High quality lip balm and hand cream packaged together (the balm is in the cap). Great concept! I have already used mine up and need to order more.

(7) My Tagalongs Purse Organizer: The more I switch handbags using this little bag, the more I appreciate it.

(8) Sulfate Free Shampoo: Save your hair color and avoid breakouts from sulfates with sulfate free hair products. I love Tigi Bed Head in the upscale brands and L’Oreal Ever Pure at the drugstore.

(9) Make Up for Ever High Definition Foundation: The best liquid foundation ever. It will be hard for me to find one to beat it!

(10) Make Up Forever Duo Matte Foundation: My favorite powder foundation. It is equally as good as the liquid.

(11) Make Up Forever Aqua Eyes: Make Up Forever is quickly becoming my favorite brand overall. Aqua eyes are the best soft eyeliners out there and they are waterproof to boot!

(12) Lush Solid Shampoo Bar: Interesting and effective. I like solid shampoo quite a bit but now have moved to using all sulfate free items.

(13) Canyon Ranch Moisture Lotion: This is a wonderful light daily moisturizer that I use pretty regularly.

(14)  Elizabeth Arden Prevage Day Moisturizer: Prevage anti-aging packaged with an SFP 30 moisturizer. Perfect!

(15) Kevin Aucoin Mascara: Another good tubing mascara. I personally like Fiberwig better, but Kevin Aucoin mascara does have a bit of a cult following.

The Best Makeup Brushes

Your makeup is usually only as good as your brush. This is especially true with cheap makeup or drugstore makeup, which isn’t usually very pigmented to begin with, and is often packed with cheap sponge applicators. The good news is that the best brushes need not cost a fortune. There are some excellent pro makeup brushes out there, which tend to be pricier, but there are also some decent inexpensive makeup brushes available at your local drugstore. I received some brush questions recently, so I thought I would do a post on them as part of the Best Makeup series here on the site.

Here are the primary differences between cheap makeup brushes and professional makeup brushes:

  • Professional makeup bushes are normally made of real animal fibers which hold and apply pigment more evenly for the best look. For liquid makeup and the best eye shadow application, pro makeup brushes are often preferable.
  • Pro makeup brushes hold up better. They do not lose bristles, which can be rather annoying when applying make up, and they last longer overall.
  • Inexpensive makeup  brushes may lose a few bristles, but often, once they are broken in, they work nearly as well as the pro brushes. Some brands are better than others though. For example, Eco Tools tend to hold up pretty well, but the last Sonia Kashuk makeup brush I had lost bristles constantly, to the point where I considered it unusable.
  • Price is often the biggest difference.  Drugstore brushes are often under $10, while pro brushes are after over $20-40.  You will replace even the best drugstore makeup brushes more often though.

Below are a look at some of the best makeup brushes across several price ranges.

The Best Cheap Makeup Brushes

Eco Tools Cheap Makeup Brush Set

Low on money? One of the top cheap makeup brush brands is Eco Tools.  Eco Tools makeup brushes are very affordable, easily found in drugstores and big box retailers, and tend to hold up pretty well. They also are eco friendly, being made of recycled materials with bamboo handles, and are packaged in natural hemp and cotton cases.  For a good inexpensive makeup brush set, the Eco Tools 5 piece makeup brush set is a good way to test out the line. I also love the  Eco Tools 6 piece eye makeup brush set (pictured above).

Another good inexpensive line, which can be found at CVS, are the Essence of Beauty makeup brushes. I find that those tend to wear out a bit quicker, but they are very affordable and apply makeup rather well for their price.

The Best Professional Makeup Brushes

Laura Mercier Pro Makeup Brush Set

In the pro makeup brush range, there are numerous excellent choices in brushes. But a couple always stand out. First and foremost are MAC Makeup Brushes. MAC makeup brushes are consistently high quality and often carry a bit lower price than some of the other pro brands. For a particularly good deal, watch for the MAC makeup brush sets that come out around the holidays. They are the same high quality brushes, but with shorter handles in order to fit in a makeup kit. Buying a set can be a great way to get a set of quality makeup brushes and save a good deal of money.

Another professional quality favorite of mine are the makeup brushes from Laura Mercier. You can see some Laura Mercier makeup brush sets (limited edition travel brush set  pictured above) along with some other sets at Nordstrom, which also has a pretty nice selection of higher quality items: Shop Nordstrom Makeup Brush Sets. As with the MAC brushes, finding travel sets can be a great way to save money over buying each brush individually. I actually find that I prefer the shorter handles as well.

The Best Makeup Foundation

I have been focusing for awhile now on accumulating lists of the best makeup and cosmetics (and sometimes lists of the worst as well). Total Beauty is often rather helpful in that regard since they have many such lists themselves. The article below, which is syndicated from Total Beauty lists the top 12 foundation from their editors.

Some of these I haven't tried and I am pretty darn curious about the Milani foundation now, since I generally have high regard for the Milani brand (they are on my best eye shadow list) and really good drugstore foundations can be hard to find. I also am interested in picking up Maybelline Dream Smooth Mousse Makeup because I already love their Dream Matte Mousse.

As for ones that I have tried, I definitely agree with the Stila, Lancome, and MAC Pro Longwear recommendations. To see the entire list click on through below.
