Makeup Wars: Pantone Emerald and Green Makeup For St. Patrick’s Day

Saint Patrick’s Day is coming up and emerald is the Pantone color of the year. How convenient is that? This week, the Makeup Wars bloggers take a look at everything emerald  and green.

Outside of Saint Patrick’s Day, green is not a color that I wear much, or at least not any green as bright as emerald. So, I decided to  do a bit of looking through my collection to see what among my extensive collection of palettes had the best greens. It was kind of slim pickings, but I found a couple of nice shades among a few of my favorite palettes. Interestingly, the best selection I found was in one of my most affordable palettes. I’ll save that for last.

Starting with a few more expensive choices, Urban Decay came through on both.  The Theodora Palette has two nice Greens in it and it is an awesome palette all around.  You can see my previous review of it with swatches here. Below are swatches of the greens from Urban Decay Theodora.

Next, the Urban Decay Vice Palette, another great UD choice, has a beautiful duochrome green/blue in it called Junkie. Depending on how the light hits, it looks emerald or it looks like a vivid blue/green. See my full Urban Decay Vice review here.

But here is the best source of greens I found in one palette, and you can get this one for only $13 right now! The BH Cosmetics Party Girl Palette has a nice selection of well pigmented green shades.  You can see the full review here.

BH Cosmetics does a good job at providing palettes with numerous great shades at excellent prices. The pigment in their shadows is surprisingly good for the ultra cheap cost. Here swatches of the greens from the Party Girl Palette.

BH Cosmetics Party Girl Palette Review

I recently ordered a bunch of items from BH Cosmetics, an ulta affordable online makeup sales company, and came away pleasantly surprised.   With items such as 120 color eye shadow palettes under $20 and a good selection of brushes under $5 and $10, I had my doubts. But the quality turned out to be quite high. Indeed, one of my favorite new makeup brushes came from my order, and I paid only $5.21 for it (read my BH Cosmetics Round Stippling Brush Review).

Among the items I ordered was the limited edition Party Girl Palette, a 40 shade palette with dime sized selections of brilliant and fun eye shadow shades.  The variety gives you everything that you need for fun party looks, neutral looks, and some smoky looks.  Its cost is only $17.95.

When I played with this palette, I was first off struck my the quality of the pigment. These are ultra cheap in price, but they rock in quality. The pigment is excellent, especially with the matte shades in the set. A couple of the lighter tones shimmer shades, such as the light green in my swatch photo, required extra application for me, but most shades were super dense in pigment. The shadows are a bit on the soft side, something I don’t mind since it makes blending easy, but you do have to watch for a bit of fall out of powder when applying.

Here is a sampling of swatches from the Party Girl Palette. As you can see the colors are very vibrant.

I have worn looks using this palette for hours on end with no fading or creasing. It really is a great value! BH Cosmetics also has a variety of other super affordable palettes and I highly recommend them for anyone who need good budget makeup. It also is a good way to get fun bright colors that you might not use too often while saving your budget for everyday items for more luxury type cosmetics.

Makeup Wars: Favorite Makeup Brush

This week, Makeup Wars looks at favorite makeup brushes. I chose my new favorite and very inexpensive brush for this one. I have some MAC brushes that I love, and I know that some of the ladies in the Makeup Wars group have impressive brush collections that include some very high end and wonderful brushes, but the fact remains that my favorite at the moment is a $5.21 brush!

Here it is, the BH Cosmetics Round Stippling Brush (bottom), pictured with a more standard duo fiber stippling brush (top-also from BH cosmetics). I use it for applying liquid foundation, but it would work well with powder mineral makeup as well.

I purchased this brush after seeing some good reviews of it and reading good reviews on the BH Cosmetics site. Unlike most stippling brushes, the round stippling brush has a truly flat top and the bristles are more compact.  The effect is that it more evenly holds the foundation and distributes it a bit better than a standard stippling brush. It also is exceptional at buffing. I love it with the new Urban Decay Naked Skin Foundation (read my Naked Skin Review), which looks particularly nice when buffed well. I must give a big shout out here to Phyrra for recommending Naked Skin to me!   The brush has held up well for me so far. There has been no bristle loss at all-something that can sometimes be a problem with cheaper makeup brushes.  I am really impressed with it, given its ultra cheap price!

Because the bristles are denser in this brush, and because of the flat top, I don’t think I would use it for applying blush or bronzer. I do often use a duo fiber stippling brush, such as the top one pictured here, for blush application. I happened to grab another super affordable BH brush for the photo, but I actually prefer my MAC stippling brushes for blush and bronzer application, although the BH Cosmetics brush is a perfectly good and is a super cheap alternative.

So there it is! My favorite brush, and it is only $5.21! It is a unique brush with a great price tag!
