Finishing the Dannon Activia Challenge

TakeActiviaTasteTest1 Over the past couple of weeks I have written on Dannon Activia as a healthy snack.  During that time, I also completed the Dannon Activia Fourteen Day Challenge.  Dannon offers the challenge so that you can buy their Activia yogurt, try it for two weeks, and seek a refund if you do not like it. Click the logo to the left to learn more.

I ended up being happy with Dannon as a snack and with the challenge, and I also found this easy and tasty yogurt snack recipe this week:

Layer the following in a parfait cup or drinking glass, repeating layers until full:

  • Dannon Activia Vanilla Yogurt
  • Fresh cut berries (strawberries and raspberries work particularly well).
  • More yogurt. You can mix it up and use a different flavor here if you want, such a raspberry.
  • Granola

That is it! it is super simple, yet amazingly tasty. I like it as a healthy dessert.  In the meantime, you also end up getting probiotic cultures to help maintain good digestive health, and a serving of dairy with some protein. Not a bad deal!

A few more snack ideas:

  • Mix yogurt with frozen berries
  • blend yogurt with a banana and some ice for a yogurt smoothie
  • Put vanilla yogurt on low fat pudding (or any dessert for that matter) instead of whipped cream
  • Split a banana and top with vanilla yogurt

Do you have any yogurt snack suggestions?

Dannon Activia As a Great Post Exercise Snack

TakeActiviaTasteTest1 Last week I started the Dannon Activia Fourteen Day Challenge. I am eating Activia everyday for two weeks to see how I like it. So far, so good! I found that I love, love, love the raspberry flavor and the strawberry is pretty tasty too.  I also found that Activia is a nice snack at anytime. For example, I have been taking it to work with me for a mid-morning snack, and I have eaten a cup in the evening when I found myself suddenly hungry. I figure it is a better choice than my previous choice of ice cream. Mostly though, I like it as a post exercise snack.

I am a runner and for optimal recovery, it is recommended that runners eat a light snack within 15 minutes after running that is around a 3/1 or 4/1 carbohydrate to protein ratio. A cup of Dannon Activia averages around 13 grams of carbohydrates and 4 grams of protein, so it fits quite well into my running routine. But that trick isn’t just for runners. Eating a snack with that ration of carbs to protein is recommended after any type of exercise to help the muscles refuel, rebuild, and recover. It is low in calories too, so if you are watching your weight it is a good choice.  Finally, Activia has active probiotic cultures that help maintain digestive health.

Dannon Activia is currently running their fourteen day challenge where you can try Activia for two weeks and, if your don’t love it, you can be reimbursed for the cost of the yogurt. For more info on that or on Activia in general click the logo above.

Make Room For Healthy Yogurt Snacks With Dannon Activia

Yogurt is a great value snack food, not just in terms of money, but in terms of being quick, easy, tasty and quite healthy. Consider these yogurt facts:

  • Yogurt is a good source of Calcium and Vitamin D. This can help build strong bones in children and prevent osteoporosis in adults.
  • Yogurt with active cultures provides digestive benefits. For example, Dannon Activia contains a probiotic culture called Bifidus Regularis®. This active culture helps maintain good digestive health and can be beneficial to those who have occasional irregularity.
  • According to WebMD, studies have indicated that consuming yogurt may reduce the risk of high blood pressure and may discourage vaginal yeast infections.
  • Yogurt is a good source of lean protein: A cup of Dannon Activia provides on average around 4-5 grams of protein. If you are dieting, that protein may help you feel fuller, preventing cravings and keeping you from eating too much.  It also provides on average around 12-15 grams of carbohydrates, which makes it a pretty good exercise recovery food as well. I’ll discuss that further in a follow up post next week.
  • Yogurt tastes good! I’m liking my Dannon Activia Strawberry that I was given in order to prepare this post. Hint, toss in a handful of frozen raspberries to make it extra tasty!

One of the additional things that I like about yogurt is its portability. The cups fit well in a lunch pack, so I can take a cup to work with me to add to a meal or to eat as a snack. This helps assure that I get a good amount of healthy protein, calcium, and maintain digestive health all in one shot. Another trick is to combine yogurt with a high fiber food. This adds another digestive health benefit, and works well as either a balanced light breakfast or as a more hearty snack.  For example, I like to mix a high fiber cereal into my yogurt to add some crunch and provide additional fiber. I also noticed on the Dannon website that they make a fiber version of their yogurt.

As far as healthy snacks go, yogurt is hard to beat! Dannon Activia is currently running a fourteen day challenge where you can try Activia for two weeks and, if you don’t love it, you can be reimbursed for the cost of the yogurt.
