Murad Acne Kit

When I was having a particularly hard time clearing up an adult acne breakout, I gave the Murad Acne Complex Kit ($97 Value!) a try.  This is a  highly rated kit, but I had mixed results with it, although I have seen rave reviews from others on it. Personally, I would just buy the treatment gel and spot treatment, which I like quite a bit, and use other products in place of the cleanser and lotion.

The kit contains the following:

  • Clarify Cleanser: This is a basic no frills cleanser that has Salicylic Acid to help exfoliate and fight acne. I found it a bit drying, but otherwise it is a decent enough cleanser. I like using something much cheaper though, such as a Neutrogena cleanser.
  • Exfoliating Acne Treatment Gel: With Retinol, Glycolic Acid, and Salicylic, this gel has a nice ingredient mix. It is light and non-irritating. I do really like this one for daily prevention/treatment, and would consider buying it separately.
  • Skin Perfecting Lotion: This is an oil free lotion with Retinol. I don't think the Retinol amount is very high. At least my skin didn't notice it the way it would with a high concentration.   It is a good basic light lotion, but I prefer using a light drugstore brand or Exuviance Sheer Refining Fluid (read review).
  • Acne Spot Treatment: Murad's spot treatment has 10% sulfur, which is a good antibacterial agent for treating individual areas.  The product has a bit of an odor, but any sulfur treatment will. I liked this one, but I also like using sulfur masks as spot treatments, especially on the more difficult to treat cystic type of acne. DDF makes a great sulfur mask (read review).

Overall, this is a decent enough kit to give a try. I ultimately only really liked two of the four products enough to consider repurchasing them, but the other two were OK. I just prefer other brands.

DDF Protect and Correct UV Moisturizer SPF 15

DDF Protect and Correct DDF always tends toward impressive skin care products, including melasma treatments and sunscreen. I particularly love  DDF Protect and Correct UV Moisturizing sunscreen aimed at treating and preventing hyperpigmentation and melasma.  I have always been a fan of double duty skin care products, so this one goes high on my recommended item list.

DDF Hyperpigmentation Protect And Correct UV Moisturizer SPF 15 is a light moisturizer with four chemical sunscreens for SPF 15 coverage. It also contains various extracts, including licorice root extract, to help treat pigmentation. So, the sunscreen prevents melasma discoloration, while the extracts treat it.

The lotion has a decent feel to it, absorbs fairly quickly, and I had no issues with acne with it. I do wish it had a higher SPF though. I really prefer to use SPF 30 and above for melasma treatment and prevention. A physical sunblock in it instead of all chemical ones would be nice too. Regardless, it still is a quality product.

Protect and Correct retails at around $58 and can be found at various online sources.

Bioelements and DDF: Two Good Acne Masks

I'm starting to get fed up with my adult acne, so I made a dermatologist appointment. In the meantime, I am trying out some treatment masks, both as spot treatments and as all over masks. There are two that I highly recommend: Bioelements Amino Mask and DDF Sulfur Therapeutic Mask. Each are good, but also slightly different. Notably, the Biolelements mask includes Salicylic Acid and less Sulfur, while DDF is a higher concentration Sulfur Mask

Bioelements Amino Acne MaskThe Bioelements mask is described as follows:

For All Skin Types Medicated facial mask helps prevent and clear acne blemishes. Draws-out pore-clogging debris, soaks up excess oils, calms inflammation and promotes fast healing of existing breakouts. - Medicated acne treatment mask - Contains 3% anti-bacterial sulphur and 2% salicylic acid - Unclogs pores, destroys acne bacteria, controls excess oils and helps heal existing blemishes No artificial colorants, synthetic fragrance or animal by-products. Not tested on animals.

When I used Biolements Amino Mask, I found that it worked well-- both as an all over mask, and as a spot treatment. It feels like any other clay type mask and does a good job at absorbing oil and removing the gunk in your pores. But I particularly like this one as a spot treatment. Put a bit on a blemish and leave it on overnight. The Salicylic Acid helps dissolve the gunk, while the Sulfur provides good anti-bacterial acne treatment.  Meanwhile, the mask as a whole absorbs oil had helps draw everything out.

DDF Sulfur Therapeutic Mask Acne TreatmentDDF's mask contains 10% Sulfur. For those who want maximum anti-bacterial agents, this one is great. I tend to use it more as an overall face mask once each week, although it will also work as a spot treatment.

One thing to note. Sulfur doesn't smell really good, and because these masks contain it, they obviously have an odor.  I don't mind it at all, but if you are sensitive to sulfur smell, you might not care for these.
