Generally women love receiving lingerie, especially if it's the right fit and style.  As a very general rule of thumb however, many women prefer feminine and flattering styles rather than underwear that might be too skimpy or even slutty (unless you are absolutely positive that's what she likes - in which case, go for it!).

If you are in anyway unsure about her size, have a peak at any lingerie she may already have, particularly the items that she likes to wear often - those are probably the items that are just the right size and that she finds comfortable to wear.  Also make note of the styles or colours she likes, and whether she likes plain or patterned underwear.

And gentlemen - be prepared to be totally confused by the array of lingerie available. There is a diverse array of different styles of bra, as well as a huge breadth of sizes.  But if you've done your investigative work thoroughly, you should be able to make a informed choice. However, if you are completely overwhelmed by the choice and variety, talk to a sales assistant.  That is what they are there for and, believe me, you won’t be the first man to stumble about their shop, eyes to the ground, looking like they’d rather be anywhere else in the world.  Approach them, explain your requirements – let them take the lead.  They know what they’re talking about.

However, whether you continue to stumble about clueless or not, one style that should be avoided at all costs is the heavily padded bra, or a bra with gel, or any kind of cleavage enhancing bra - this might give your partner the wrong message and completely eradicate all chance of brownie points.   And not just at the time either.  The simmering affront you have caused will last longer than you could ever imagine. But worse still - if you are buying any kind of knickers or panties - avoid ones that claim to 'control'  - this will not go down well at all.  Under any circumstances. At any time.  Ever. You have been warned.

But please don't let this put you off - buying lingerie for your partner can be one of the most thoughtful things you can do. It's an lovely gift which - if you get it right - shows that you really care, and that you have put a lot of effort into getting just the right gift for her.  And the brownie points will rack up as she then thinks that you’re the most thoughtful and considerate partner any woman has ever had.  And when she tells all her friends (because she will), they’ll all think you are fabulous, too.
