Five Summertime Braids to Keep You Cool While Looking Hot

Hello, summer!  Break out the sunblock and the bikinis, say goodbye to the office, and strap on those sandals. As the days get hotter, so do we – but not in a good way. The days may be gorgeously warm and sunny, but our hair just sticks to our skin, making us sweaty and unkempt. Hot tools, like our blow dryer and flat iron, just make things worse.

Luckily, there’s an easy fix: braid it up! Getting your hair off your neck is easy with both simple and intricate braids that go with any outfit and occasion. You can execute these styles with any texture hair, straight, wavy, or curly, and they don’t require hot tools. Put a straw fedora on, or wrap a scarf around your head, or stick a flower behind your ear; your hair will look beautiful, and so will you. Without further ado, the five braids, from easiest to most difficult:

French Braided Sections

Some days, your bangs just won’t cooperate. Instead of continuously battling with them, get them off your face with a small French braid!

Part your hair however you want to, in the middle, on one side, a very deep side part, it doesn’t matter. Then, starting at the part, take three tiny pieces of hair, and begin to French braid, adding more hair as you go. You can stop braiding any time. A small braid keep your bangs up, a braid that circles to the back of your head can hold your hair half up; again, it doesn’t matter. You’re done!

You can let your hair cascade out with a braid just at your temple, or you can pull the rest of your hair up, letting the braid add some visual interest to an updo. This braid is great for the office or the gym.

Fishtail Braid

This braid is extremely easy: separate your hair into two equal sections. You can do this on either side of you head, or at the back. Keeping the right section in your right hand, pick up a half-inch portion from the back of the left section. Cross it over the right section of hair and combine. Repeat using the other section of hair. Pick up a half-inch portion from the back of the right section, cross it over the left, combine. The smaller the sections, the more interesting the braid.

This style is great for the beach, and leaves your hair in great waves when you take it out at night! A fedora fits right overtop and looks effortless.

Milkmaid/Halo Braid

This braid looks much more complicated than it is. There are two ways to accomplish this style.

The first is to separate your hair into two equal sections, and braid each in the classic three-strand braid. You should have two braids of the same size when you are finished. Next, take one braid, loop it over the top of your head, and pin it securely. Then, take the remaining braid, loop it over the other side of your head, and pin it behind the first braid.

The second method is more difficult, but has a slightly different look. With practice, you can achieve this braid. Again, split your hair into two sections. Make sure to tie one up so it doesn’t get in the way! Starting with the loose section, begin to French braid it, making sure to being the braid over the top of your head. When you reach the center of your forehead, take out the other section and begin to add it to the French braid. Continue braiding around your head until there is no hair left. Pin the end of the braid under the actual braid. Viola!

This sensual hairstyle looks beautiful and modern with a flower tucked into it, and is wonderful for a wedding. Everyone will ask how you did it!

The Katniss Braid

Katniss Hunger Games Braid

Though she didn’t invent the braid, Suzanne Collins’ character Katniss Everdeen from her series The Hunger Games certainly popularized this twist on a classic French braid. It requires some skill and flexibility, but is worth the practice.

Start over one ear, at your temple, and begin to French braid. You will have to work behind your head to loop it to the other side. Keep adding hair until the braid reaches below your other ear. Braid normally from there.

This style doesn’t need much embellishment, since it says so much on its own, but you can add a sparkly doodad to jazz it up if you’re going out to dinner or on a date.

Five Strand Braid

This braid is, arguably, the most complicated on the list, as it is more of a weave than a braid. But visually, it is one of the most beautiful and interesting braids out there.

Pull all your hair either behind your head (much more difficult, since you can’t see!) or to one side. Separate your hair into five equal sections. Keeping them straight will be hard at first, but practice makes perfect! Start on the right side: Cross the outermost strand over the second strand and under the middle strand. That outermost strand should now be the middle. Take the outermost strand on the left side, over the second, under the middle. That strand will now be the middle.

Keep going over then under on the right side, then over and under on the left. It helps to say “over” and “under” out loud, to keep track of where you are. When you’re done, people will marvel over the intricacy that is your five-strand braid. Add some pretty earrings and you’re good to go anywhere!

Make sure to keep your hair healthy and clean, and avoid hot tools as much as you can in the summer. The sun damages your hair enough. These five braids may keep you cool this season, but it may raise someone else’s temperature!

Taking Good Care Of Your Hair Extensions

Wearing a hair extension will definitely give a new oomph to your crowning glory. Your hair will be fuller, longer, or highlighted with a nice new color. It can also conceal a terrible haircut or hair color and gives your natural hair a discreet way to grow back to its original look.

hair extension care

A hair extension is a fashion and beauty investment that needs appropriate care in order for it to last long. You cannot expect your extensions to be flawless if you don’t maintain and take care of it properly. You need to invest time, effort, and money to keep it in tip-top shape. But before anything else, it is advisable not to wash your hair during the first 3 days after the extension is attached.

The most basic things that you need for the maintenance of your hair extension are:

· Good shampoo and conditioner

· Leave-on conditioner for day and night applications

· Hair brush with soft bristles

· Heat/sun protection

· Elastic hair tie or scrunchy that you can use when sleeping

Washing and Conditioning

· Before taking a shower, brush your dry hair first to ensure that there are no tangles.

· Wash your hair every other day only. You can use a dry shampoo during the days that you cannot wash them.

· Stand up while washing your hair and start shampooing around the nape, then go to the other parts slowly. It is important to wash the nape portion thoroughly because most of the dirt builds up there.

· Be sure to rinse all the parts completely.

· Apply the hair conditioner. Leave it on for while; do some scrubbing or shaving while letting the conditioner seep well. Rinse thoroughly. If you want, you can use cool water to rinse your hair as this will close your hair cuticles.

· Pat your hair dry with a clean towel and apply leave-on conditioner.

· Apply intense treatment every week to have softer and shiner hair.

Swimming and Sunbathing

It’s not advisable to go swimming if you have hair extensions on but if you really want to, it’s best to have your extensions checked by your stylist. You need to ensure that it’s still attached well. You also have to bear in mind that bond extensions, whether hot or cold, don’t cope well with extremely hot weather.

Follow these safety measures if you decide to go swimming with your extensions on:

· Don’t use a swimming cap as this will cause tangling. Instead, braid your hair.

· As much as possible, keep your head up and never go diving.

· Shower after swimming. Wash your body except the head area and keep your hair braided.

· Unknot the braid after you shower, comb your hair gently, and wait for it to dry.

· When your hair is all dry and untangled, you can already wash your hair with shampoo and conditioner.

· If you wish to go sunbathing, you also need to braid your hair. You can unbraid your hair only after your hair cools down. Comb it thoroughly before washing it.

Swimming with your hair extensions on does require a more meticulous method of washing but these steps need to be followed to restore your hair to its original state.

Sleeping with your Hair Extensions

To avoid tangling, put your hair in a bun using a scrunchy or braid it. You don’t want your hair to be disheveled like crazy when you wake up. Don’t ever sleep when your hair is still wet as this will surely put your hair into knots. Air-dry it and brush it with a hair extension brush. If you notice some tangles, brush the tips of your hair first before slowly brushing down all the other parts.

You have to bear in mind that heat in the form of sun exposure, blow drying, or hair ironing will easily damage your hair extensions. If you do need to use or be exposed to such things, you have to do it in moderation. As much as possible, never bleach, perm, or apply any other chemical treatment to your hair while the extensions are there. One last thing that you need to do is to visit a professional hair extensions stylist every 4 weeks. This checkup will guarantee that your extensions are well and good.

Try A New Hair Cut or Style

When it comes to our hair, you may be reluctant to get your hair cut or change the way you wear it and keep the same look forever. Some women tend to get comfortable with the look that she already has, which can lead to a dated appearance. However, getting a new haircut can make a world of difference in how you carry yourself and the way that you feel about the world around you.

30 Days of Beauty, Day 7: Change Up Your Hair Cut or Try a New Hair Style

One the easiest ways to improve your appearance or to get a new look  is to change your hair.  But new hair cuts can also bring a level of uncertainty or stress.  If you are not quite ready to try a new cut, how about a new style?

Easy Hair Styles

One of the simplest ways to get a pain free new look is with a simple updo. Try this simple messy side bun from professional stylist Emily Hudspeth of Emily Hudspeth-Bringing the Beauty to You. It takes only 5 minutes!

Get a Blow Out

Another great way to get an easy new look, especially if you normally wear curly or wavy hair,  is to head to the salon for a blow out.   Alicia Mohr of Things to Cherish offers this product tip to help make your blow out last:

"Klorane Gentle Dry Shampoo with Oat Milk Non-Aerosol Spray $18 Dry Shampoo is one of the most useful beauty inventions. It adds volume and let’s you go a day or two without washing your hair (something that all stylists recommend, but few of us actually do…) I have tried 5 or 6 of these and this is the best by far. It’s not cheap, but if you use it a few times a week this will last for over a year. It’s perfect for long flights too!"

Alicia also loves  John Frieda Clear Shine Luminous Glaze  to tame her hair, stating that after using it:

“My hair is definitely shinier and smoother and my ends appear less dry and damaged. Plus, the Full Repair protects my hair from further damage due to heat styling. *** You can choose to leave it on for 3 minutes and rinse after you shampoo and condition your hair or do a weekly intense treatment in which you leave it hair for 20 minutes and then rinse. Three cheers for shiny hair without a trip to the salon!”

No matter what styling products you use or for whatever occasion,  Heather Adessa from *Gloss & Tell, and Makeup By Heather A. gives this great tip:

“When applying product to your hair, always start in the back of the head and move forward. That way you don't get globs of product in the front of your head, which can cause greasiness and look dirty.”

Getting a New Haircut

Feeling like you need a more permanent change? Then perhaps you want to go for a new cut!

Before you decide on a new haircut, make sure you know the reasons behind the change and how it will affect you. Whether you’re going for a new look for a job, to spice up your love life, or because you just ended a relationship, a new haircut may be just the right move.

Most people go into a salon and leave it up to the stylist to decide what type of haircut would look good on them. It is not a bad idea to ask a stylist for suggestions, but you should at least have some idea of what type of look you would like to walk out of there with.

Spend some time looking through celebrity and hairstyle magazines to get an idea of the types of looks that are most popular. There are even online tools where you can see yourself in a virtual hairstyle which will show you what the haircut looks like before they actually begin cutting your hair. Bring in any pictures that you like so that the stylist can see what you would like your hair to resemble.

You should also decide what type of hairstyle best fits your personality and your lifestyle. If you have limited time in the morning to get ready for work, choose a style that’s simple and doesn’t take a lot of time to take care of. If you prefer longer hair, think about adding bangs and layers to give yourself a fresh look.

Before you try a new haircut, you should also take into consideration the texture of your hair. If you have fine and thin hair, go for a style with layers. This is a great way to add dimension and volume to your hair. For hair that is unruly and coarse, select a style for medium length hair that will be easy to manage.

We tend to get so caught up in our busy lives that we seldom do something special for ourselves. Getting a new haircut will have such a major impact on your life. A new haircut is a great way to bring a positive change to your life and the people around you. A different haircut is a new beginning and a way to make a statement about your individual personality whether you’re bold and daring or classy and reserved.

Feeling brave? Tera Rae Stephens shows you how to cut your friend’s bangs!
