No Poo: Shampoo Alternatives for Dry Hair

Who says we need shampoo to cleanser our hair??

…well – WE DON’T!!

“No-Poo Shampoo” hair treatments are literally where you use no shampoo to cleanse and de-gunk-tify your hair. Many women with dry hair have been switching their usage of shampoo to wash their hair for other alternatives. I did some of my own research and I found out that there are a few options to cleansing your hair that have nothing to do with shampoo. The reason why ladies have been opting out of using shampoo is because the lather and soap in shampoos is a product of the sulfates that can strip your hair of its natural oils and nutrients. Usually, the “3-to-5-minute” conditioner that is applied after shampooing can be enough to restore the natural oils in your hair, however, depending on how greasy your hair is, the type of hair texture you have and how often you wash it – the restorative effects of your conditioner may not be enough to revive your hair.

If you suffer from dry brittle hair, damage, breakage and split ends, I have listed some great ways to wash and condition your hair without using a harsh shampoo all the time.

1. Apple Cider Vinegar and Water

Apple Cider Vinegar and Water treatments are a great way to restore the nutrients in your hair without using a shampoo. This product is really simple to use. All you need to do is rinse your hair, then apply equal amounts of Apple Cider Vinegar and Water into a container and then apply to your hair like a shampoo. Massage the mixture through your scalp and hair (don’t forget to massage your hair from root to tip), and then rinse out thoroughly with water and apply your conditioner afterwards. The properties of Apple Cider Vinegar that are beneficial to your hair are that it restores the pH balance of your scalp which promotes healthy growth of hair and eliminates the bacteria that cause dandruff, while the vinegar properties act as a natural soap that cleanses the hair without stripping it of its natural oils. This should be used in tandem with your conditioner as your hair washing regime, and not by itself.

2. Co-Washing

Co-Washing is when you wash your hair with two different conditioners and no shampoo. I have listed what to get and step by step instructions on how to wash your hair below:

  • What to get:

  • One cheap conditioner to act as your shampoo. (My choice is V05 Moisture Milks, or Argan Oil Cleansing Conditioner).
  • One light protein based conditioner to deep condition your hair. (This should be a high quality conditioner or deep conditioning mask. Affirm 5-in-1 is really good and contains a light amount of protein for hair reconstruction)
  • Then get 3 of the following 5 oils: jojoba oil, grape seed oil, almond oil, coconut oil and oil oil (my recommendation is jojoba oil, grape seed, oil and coconut oil. Coconut oil is usually solid so you will have to melt a little bit for about 20-30secs in the microwave each time you deep condition.)

Step by Step Usage

clip_image003

  • Before you start showering, melt a small (one teaspoon) amount of coconut oil into a bowl. But any access coconut oil into your hair to get it off your hands. Once melted, add a few drops of the other two oils that you are using (from the five listed above) into the bowl with the melted coconut oil. I use about 2 to 3 drops of each oil. Mix this all together with your deep conditioner.
  • Rinse your hair.
  • Apply ample amounts of V05 moisture milk (or whatever initial conditioner you use) and lather your hair as if it were a shampoo. Be sure to really massage it into your scalp through the ends of your hair. Then rinse out thoroughly.
  • Then apply the deep conditioner mixture that you created before you started showering. When I applying your deep conditioner, section off your hair into about four sections. Start your application from your ends then work your way up to your scalp. Be sure to massage it well into your hair so that all the strands and scalp get moisture.
  • Pin your hair up, place a shower cap over your hair to prevent leakage.
  • Let the deep conditioner set for about 15 -30 mins depending on the damage of your hair or how dry it is. Afterwards, rinse out the deep conditioner thoroughly.
  • Towel dry your hair then apply your leave-in-conditioners, serums or mousse while your hair is damp.
  • If you have time, let you hair air dry, if you are in a hurry, dry on low or medium heat with a blow dryer.

Top 7 Easy Holiday Hair Styles

Need something new for your holiday hair? Try one of the below holiday hair styles!

Hair French Twist

1. Voluminous Hair

Having voluminous hair is the perfect way to celebrate the holidays. All you need is a curling iron ( aim for one that has a 2 inch barrel ). Section your hair and curl it piece by piece until you like your curls. Tease your hair until it's perfect, add hairspray, and your night is ready to begin!

2. Windswept Beach Hair

If you live in a beach town, you should be familiar with the sexy beach hair locals wear. Even if you don't live in a beach community, why not use the windswept beach look to spice up your hairstyle for the holidays? Your hair will stand out at holiday parties amidst the sea of formal updo hair styles. You can achieve this look by using a few spritzes of texturizing spray and blow dry your hair upside down. To get more texture, you can also braid parts of your hair in a fishtail.

3. Wavy Hair

If you want long sexy waves, you can wrap your hair around a curling iron without allowing and not clamping your hair. First you can prep your hair by using mousse and a light styling lotion so that the wave pattern will be set and stay longer. You can avoid these extra products if your hair can easily hold curls, however you may want to use a heat protectant spray. Wavy hair is the definition of sex appeal.

4. Knotted Hair

You can also try knotting your hair for the holidays. Grab some boby pins and a brush and comb to create this easy style. You can choose to make one knot, or make several knots. While your hair is damp, section it off and slowly twist your hair until you've reached your scalp. Once you've got the knot where you'd like, use the bobby pin to pin it into place. Voila! Now you are ready to party.

5. Bun Made With Braids

Want to try a normal bun but want to do it in an unusual way? This hairstyle can take a little more time, especially if you want to do smaller braids. Take small sections of your hair and braid it close to your scalp, while collecting the bottom part of your hair in one big bun.

6. French Twist

A casual chignon or french twist is the epitome of feminine chic. French twists can be done easily with bobby pins and by sweeping your hair off to the side. Place a bobby pin in your hair vertically and continue to place them vertically in a criss cross pattern up your scalp. Gather your hair in one handful and twist it and place more bobby pins to hold it in place. Use hairspray so the style will hold.

7. Bouffant Bun

Want to try a bouffant bun? Use a round brush and use shine serum to give it additional shine. After you gather your hair in a bun, use an elastic band or bobby pins to hold it in place.

Your Home Hair Spa

Take a look around your kitchen cabinet to see a host of things that will be great for your hair. Though expensive products and spa treatments have their place and can make you feel pampered and luxurious, they can burn a hole in your pocket. For more pocket friendly hair solutions, raid the kitchen everyday for lovely, lustrous hair; naturally!

Hot Oil Massage

Nothing works like a hot oil massage to treat your hair before you wash it. If possible, do this the night before shampooing or give it at least an hour or so before you shampoo: olive oil is great, but so is coconut oil, almond oil etc. Heat the oil till it is quite warm.

Then, dipping your fingers in the oil, massage your scalp working the oil in gently. Massage the entire scalp and then gently comb out your hair so that the oil spreads down each hair shaft as well. If you don’t mind doing some laundry later, wrap up your hair in a warm towel, or just tuck it up and out of the way.

Deep Conditioning Treatment

Many women swear by mayonnaise as a terrific hair conditioner. And think of it; it contains all the things that are good for the hair: vegetable oil and eggs! Another great conditioner for hair is mashed up avocado. It is the creamy, almost buttery kind of texture that the fruit has, which coats the hair shaft and smoothes frizz offering natural moisture and shine to the hair.

Combining these two ingredients is to be recommended: using full fat mayo and half a ripe avocado and mix both ingredients together to form a paste which can then be applied to the hair. Leaving it on for about 20 minutes should give it enough time to work before you rinse it out. Some women even recommend using this the same way as store bought conditioners, which can be used after shampooing the hair and which can be rinsed out same as any regular conditioner though this may not be for everyone.

An after shampoo conditioner that also recommends itself is black tea (boil tea leaves, strain and use the tea water) mixed with the juice of one lemon. Not only is this a natural conditioner, it can also be used to treat minor scalp problem such as dandruff and itchy scalp.

For oily hair it is recommended that your last rinse can be done with vinegar which helps to act as a natural astringent upon the scalp. Some recommend apple cider vinegar for its beneficial effects on hair.

Other Natural Hair Tonics

Aloe vera is known to be great for the hair and the skin and is easy to grow in a pot or anywhere. Snip off a few inches of the succulent plant and slice it to extract the gel. Simply apply this straight on to the hair and keep in on for a while before shampooing.

Honey is another natural ingredient that is great for the hair. It can be used by itself or along with line.
