The Secret Hair Care Weapon That Is Lurking in Your Kitchen

With everyone exploring ways to save money these days and pad their wallets, many are turning to do-it-yourself (DIY) secrets to help avoid paying high priced professionals. Considered a luxury expense, hair care can fall into this category, as paying for both name brand products and salon prices can quickly deplete your funds. So, do you know what hair care secret weapon is hiding in your kitchen? The answer is Vinegar!

White Vinegar

Although many people have become aware of the useful advantages of the common household staple, vinegar, many don’t realize the wonderful benefits of using this very inexpensive product in their hair care regimens. While white vinegar can do wonders itself, apple cider vinegar is often favored for hair care because of the enzymes and minerals it contains.

Note: Those with color treated or chemically treated hair should do any of the below items with caution. Vinegar can strip color.

Eliminate Dandruff

The number one reason people use vinegar on their hair is to eliminate dandruff. Using a rinse, made up of one half cup of vinegar and two cups of warm water, can help you achieve this. Apply the rinse to your hair immediately after shampooing and allow it to sit for up to half an hour. It is ideal to do this at least once a week to obtain optimal scalp health.

Remove Product Buildup

There is no need to pay for an expensive clarifying shampoo. Vinegar is also used to remove product build up, which allows your hair to regain its natural shine and luster. There are some users who claim it can even help eliminate tangles, which can add unneeded stress to the hair. Using a rinse one to three times a week, made up of one cup of vinegar and two cups of warm water, is highly recommended for those who regularly use product on their hair on a daily basis. You may find it easier to apply the vinegar rinse with a spray bottle, rather than pouring it on, because of its thin consistency.

Clean Your Hairbrush

Because your hairbrush can also collect so much product build up, as well as dirt and dust, then transfer it back into your hair, it is pertinent that you always use a clean hairbrush. To keep your existing hairbrush clean, make it a point to regularly soak it overnight in a rinse made up of half vinegar and half water. This will also eliminate the cost of constantly having to replace your brushes.

Add Highlights

In addition to helping obtain healthy hair, vinegar can even help you achieve a new look, such as highlights. By simply adding about five tablespoons of white vinegar to your shampoo bottle you can create blonde highlights or give a boost to already existing ones. Just shampoo your hair as usual but leave the homemade solution in for at least ten minutes. Adjust the time if you are looking for bolder results. Sitting in sunlight or using a hair dryer will also help with lightening. For more auburn tones, use cider vinegar or try red wine vinegar for reddish tones.

To get the best results, remember to also condition your hair regularly. Using conditioner on your hair before applying a vinegar rinse will prevent any minimal drying effect that it may have on the hair.

Liven Up Your Look With Hair Color

30 Days of Beauty Day 8, Hair Color Options

Whether you are looking to add spice to your existing hair color or to change it completely, it is important to consider your hair color options. Working with a stylist or on your own, you should always make your color intentions clear and determine what color will best complement your physical features and personality.

Color Permanence

There are many different levels of hair dye permanence. Semi-permanent hair dye is the least damaging to your hair. It washes out over time and becomes semi-transparent. However, because it contains no ammonia and less hydrogen peroxide, semi-permanent hair dye is only found in darker colors. Demi-permanent dye can also be found only in darker colors because it contains no ammonia. However, it lasts somewhat longer than semi-permanent dye and is great for covering gray or lighter hair. This type of dye usually requires you to retouch your roots every 4-6 weeks. Permanent hair dye lasts the longest and usually contains hydrogen peroxide and ammonia compounds. Roots should be retouched every 4-6 weeks and color usually lasts for as long as it takes your hair to grow out. Permanent hair dye can darken and lighten hair.

Full Color v. Highlights

Full color can be great for covering gray and for changes that are more than a shade or two different from your natural color. However, there are many ways to invigorate your hair without performing an overall dye job. Highlights are one way to do this.

Foil highlights

With highlights, the hair is bleached or otherwise lightened, boosting your hair's vitality and blending grays or other hair imperfections. With lowlights, hair tone is darkened and areas that are too light are blended together with the rest of your hair. Both of these work to create more even tone and increase your hair's shine. Two other popular ways of coloring hair include baliage and the base flash. Both of these use lightening techniques, but to different effects. In baliage, some form of hair lightener is applied to specific areas of the hair, defining your hair and improving the appearance of volume and overall shape. In base flashing, the tone of the hair is lightened to emphasize highlights and even hair tone.

Kimberly Nissen from The Plastic Diaries provides this tip for a quick color pick up that will look natural and which works great either with permanent color or with a semi-permanent gloss:

“Do you desperately need your hair colour freshened up? Pick up a box of hair colour from your grocery store in the same colour as your roots. It will even the tone and make your hair super shiny."

Here are before and after photos of Kimberly’s look using Schwarzkopf Perfect Mousse:

Color Maintenance

Once you have colored your hair, it is important to maintain the color to keep it looking its best. Depending on the type of dye you use, you will usually have to redye your roots every month or so. While some dye jobs can be performed at home, others might require a stylist's help.

Need to extent your color a bit between sessions? Nicole Dantzler of Lipstick and Luxury suggests this: “Use your old mascara to cover your grays in between color touch-ups. This is a quick and easy way to extend the life of your hair color!”

Prepping for Hair Color

Hair responds best to color if it is good condition beforehand. To prep your hair for color, Pammy Schmitt from Pammy Blogs Beauty offers this great information:

"Always do a protein deep-treatment before and/or after highlights! This process has taken my hair from dry and damaged to long and healthy. While highlights look beautiful, the process itself is quite damaging to your hair. Highlighting strips hair of both moisture and protein which leaves hair fragile, dry, and prone to breakage. You can combat this damage with protein treatments followed by deep conditioners.

Here is my process in a nutshell:

-24-48 hours before highlights do a deep protein treatment followed by a deep moisturizing conditioner. I like to use Aphogee 2-step Protein Treatment followed by L'Oreals Cream of Nature Conditioner (under heat). Aphogee 2-step is a professional product. So, please be careful to follow instructions precisely if you decide to use it.

-Repeat the above step the first time you wash your hair post-highlights.

-Every 2 weeks use a lighter protein treatment like Redken CAT and a moisturizing conditioner of your choice."

Creative Color

Creative Color is also quite popular these days. For adding simple streaks of bold color, a non-permanent color product such as  streakers can be used, or simple clip in extensions may be added.

For more permanent creative color, the hair is normally bleached and then color is added back in. For more information read our past creative color articles here:

Try A New Hair Cut or Style

When it comes to our hair, you may be reluctant to get your hair cut or change the way you wear it and keep the same look forever. Some women tend to get comfortable with the look that she already has, which can lead to a dated appearance. However, getting a new haircut can make a world of difference in how you carry yourself and the way that you feel about the world around you.

30 Days of Beauty, Day 7: Change Up Your Hair Cut or Try a New Hair Style

One the easiest ways to improve your appearance or to get a new look  is to change your hair.  But new hair cuts can also bring a level of uncertainty or stress.  If you are not quite ready to try a new cut, how about a new style?

Easy Hair Styles

One of the simplest ways to get a pain free new look is with a simple updo. Try this simple messy side bun from professional stylist Emily Hudspeth of Emily Hudspeth-Bringing the Beauty to You. It takes only 5 minutes!

Get a Blow Out

Another great way to get an easy new look, especially if you normally wear curly or wavy hair,  is to head to the salon for a blow out.   Alicia Mohr of Things to Cherish offers this product tip to help make your blow out last:

"Klorane Gentle Dry Shampoo with Oat Milk Non-Aerosol Spray $18 Dry Shampoo is one of the most useful beauty inventions. It adds volume and let’s you go a day or two without washing your hair (something that all stylists recommend, but few of us actually do…) I have tried 5 or 6 of these and this is the best by far. It’s not cheap, but if you use it a few times a week this will last for over a year. It’s perfect for long flights too!"

Alicia also loves  John Frieda Clear Shine Luminous Glaze  to tame her hair, stating that after using it:

“My hair is definitely shinier and smoother and my ends appear less dry and damaged. Plus, the Full Repair protects my hair from further damage due to heat styling. *** You can choose to leave it on for 3 minutes and rinse after you shampoo and condition your hair or do a weekly intense treatment in which you leave it hair for 20 minutes and then rinse. Three cheers for shiny hair without a trip to the salon!”

No matter what styling products you use or for whatever occasion,  Heather Adessa from *Gloss & Tell, and Makeup By Heather A. gives this great tip:

“When applying product to your hair, always start in the back of the head and move forward. That way you don't get globs of product in the front of your head, which can cause greasiness and look dirty.”

Getting a New Haircut

Feeling like you need a more permanent change? Then perhaps you want to go for a new cut!

Before you decide on a new haircut, make sure you know the reasons behind the change and how it will affect you. Whether you’re going for a new look for a job, to spice up your love life, or because you just ended a relationship, a new haircut may be just the right move.

Most people go into a salon and leave it up to the stylist to decide what type of haircut would look good on them. It is not a bad idea to ask a stylist for suggestions, but you should at least have some idea of what type of look you would like to walk out of there with.

Spend some time looking through celebrity and hairstyle magazines to get an idea of the types of looks that are most popular. There are even online tools where you can see yourself in a virtual hairstyle which will show you what the haircut looks like before they actually begin cutting your hair. Bring in any pictures that you like so that the stylist can see what you would like your hair to resemble.

You should also decide what type of hairstyle best fits your personality and your lifestyle. If you have limited time in the morning to get ready for work, choose a style that’s simple and doesn’t take a lot of time to take care of. If you prefer longer hair, think about adding bangs and layers to give yourself a fresh look.

Before you try a new haircut, you should also take into consideration the texture of your hair. If you have fine and thin hair, go for a style with layers. This is a great way to add dimension and volume to your hair. For hair that is unruly and coarse, select a style for medium length hair that will be easy to manage.

We tend to get so caught up in our busy lives that we seldom do something special for ourselves. Getting a new haircut will have such a major impact on your life. A new haircut is a great way to bring a positive change to your life and the people around you. A different haircut is a new beginning and a way to make a statement about your individual personality whether you’re bold and daring or classy and reserved.
