Top Skin Care Products For Any Skin Type

Best Skin Care Products

Peter Thomas Roth Glycolic Gel

I like lists. So here is my list of the best skin care products for every skin type. I have also included a non-exhaustive list of product suggestions with links to my reviews in those instances where I have reviewed the product. Do you have a top skin care product that you would add or substitute? Leave a comment!

Number 5: A chemical exfoliating product. Use of a product such as glycolic acid, retinol, or even salicylic acid (a common beta-hydroxy acid acne product), will help keep your skin blackhead and blemish free. These products break up the chemicals holding those dead skin cells together. This increases cell turnover and assists in dissolving black heads, keeping skin looking fresh and youthful. If you have hyperpigmentation or melasma, glycolic or retinol products can be particularly good used in combination with skin lightening products. Look at it this way, less dead skin cells in the way means more active product is getting to the cells that need it. Finally they can have anti-wrinkle effects, especially the retinol products. So these products have multiple benefits! A few favorites to try:

Glycolic products: Peter Thomas Roth Glycolic Acid 10% Clarifying Gel

Retinol Products: Worth looking at is Derma Doctor Poetry in Lotion. This is one of my favorites and one with the highest concentration allowed over the counter (1%) but that is also gentle on the skin. A good drugstore version is also RoC Retinol Correxion Deep Wrinkle Serum.

Salicylic: Neutrogena Clear Pore Oil-Controlling Astringent, Salicylic Acid Acne Medication is a good basic and affordable salicylic acid. Or check out these salicylic and glycolic mixes: For 5% glycolic and 1% salicylic, try MD Formulations Glycare Acne Gel. You can up it to 10% glycolic and 2% salicylic with Peter Thomas Roth AHA/BHA Acne Clearing Gel. I have used the Peter Thomas Roth product with good results.

Number 4: A vitamin C product. Vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant that can help your skin recover from exposure to daily pollutants and stresses. It also can help lighten hyperpigmentation or melasma and generally even out skin tone. Some favorites to try:

High potency: GreatSkin® Vibran C Creme with Ceramides 1.25 oz. (pictured). This creme has 10% stable vitamin C with moisturizing ceramides.

Good value: Items from the Lumene Radiant C+ line (Read review here: Lumene Radiant C ).

Number 3: A good moisturizer for your skin type. All skin types can benefit from the regular use of a moisturizer, even oily skin. For those with acne prone skin who worry about moisturizer use, consider a light cream or gel product. Many acne products dry the skin and cause it to increase oil production as a rebound effect. The use of a moisturizing products can actually help prevent acne in the long run. Some items to try:

Oily Skin: DHC Mild Lotion is a great light moisturizer for all skin types.  Another really good one for those who are acne prone is Murad Skin Perfecting Lotion (Acne).

Normal Skin:  DHC Rich Moisture is a great choice. There is also the favorite of many: Estee Lauder DayWear.

Dry skin:  I really love Prescriptives Intensive Rebuilding Moisturizer read review here: Prescriptives PX Intensive Rebuilding Moisturizer. Unfortunately both are expensive. For a good value, consider trying one of the Lumene products (read review here: Lumene Skin Care.

For really dry skin or as a specialty product. I think Creme de la Mer can't be beat. It is expensive, but a little goes a long way and this stuff really can moisturize with no irritation. Tip: Try it under your nose when it gets chapped from a cold.

Number 2: Water. OK, so it isn't necessarily a product, but drinking a lot of water is one of the best things you can do for your skin. You can also look fashionable carrying certain bottles. Plain water is on of the best skin care products out there!

Number 1: Sunscreen. If you do nothing else, at least wear sunscreen. Aim for full spectrum coverage with a minimum of SPF 15, and SPF 30 being optimal. Regular use of sunscreen fulfills multiple functions. It prevents skin cancer, it delays wrinkling and hyperpigmentation, and for most people it also can double as a light moisturizer. Think that it is OK to skip sunscreen because you need vitamin D from the sun? Think again. You can get your dose of vitamin D from the sun in matter of a few minutes. Better yet, get it from a multi-vitamin or fortified milk. If you want a tan, try some of the many excellent self tanning products that are on the market.

Some good sunscreens to try: For full spectrum physical blockers with high SPF, my favorite is Total Block UVA/UVB SPF 65. This is full wavelength blocking and is great for people with melasma, skin cancer concerns, and hyperpigmentation. But it certainly is not limited to those people and is good for anyone concerned about the sun.

For a medium SPF full spectrum sunscreen Neutrogena makes a good one. Or try the much talked about full spectrum chemical blocker found in La Roche-Posay Anthelios.

Lumene Premium Beauty Makeup

Lumene Makeup I recently wrote about a number of Lumene Skin Care Products.  Lumene also produces makeup and I just love their Lumene Premium Beauty Rejuvenating Makeup. You can find Lumene at CVS Pharmacies, Target Stores and at ULTA Beauty (particularly online).  The Lumene Foundation is it is my new favorite makeup. Although marketed for women over 50, Lumene Rejuvenating Foundation is ideal for anyone with either dry skin, fine lines and wrinkles, or concerns about preventing fine lines and wrinkles. What I love most about this foundation is that it is very comfortable to wear. It provides a good measure of moisture and never feels dry or heavy. It blends well and has good staying power, again without ever getting heavy or sticky. I also had no issues with it settling into my pores or lines. Coverage is medium and I found that while a bit of my hyperpigmented areas from melasma showed through, the coverage was quite acceptable for me in terms of what I expect for normal everyday use.

A side bonus of the Lumene makeup, and why the company has chosen to target it at a later age group, is that it contains a peptide complex of Hexapeptide-8 (argireline)and Palmitoyl Pentapeptide-4 (matrixyl).  These are a couple of the complexes that have some documentation of effectiveness in wrinkle treatment. At the age of 40 and with wrinkles coming on, being able to provide some treatment actives to my skin through my makeup is quite attractive to me and is what led me to initially purchase the Lumene foundation.

Overall, I love the Lumene makeup! in many ways, it feels similar to my other current favorite Estee Lauder Resilience Lift Extreme. But at $22 for the Lumene product as compared to $35 for Estee Lauder, and with the additional treatment actives in it, the Lumene foundation is the better product and better value. If you have dry and aging skin, or have normal to dry skin and want some peptide action from your foundation, give this one a try.

Review of Lumene Skin Care Products

Lumene Day Cream Review

Lumene Day cream

Over the past week I tried a number of Lumene skin care products with great enjoyment. I also tried a foundation, which I will rave about in its own separate post (update, that review is here: Lumene Foundation). Lumene skin care products originate in Finland and are available in the United States at some CVS stores, Target, and at ULTA Beauty and Drugstore.com. They also sell some of their products in small trial sizes, so if you have a store near you that carries the brand, it is worth checking there in person for trial sizes and various local sales.

First up are the Lumene Sensitive Touch Cleansing Wipes. These worked quite well at removing dirt, oil, and makeup, including eye makeup. The wipes contain oat milk, which helps keep the cleanser from drying the skin. I liked the cleansing pads and will likely purchase more. I had been using Garnier Nutritioniste Cleansing Wipes (link is to previous review), but those tend to be a bit dry. I like the Lumene better because they are not too soapy, yet have a bit more moisture than the Garnier wipes. They also come is great travel size packs.

I also really liked a pair of products from the Lumene Time Freeze line. Lumene puts age ranges on their lines, with age 40 plus listed for the time freeze line. Although it might be good for the company's marketing, I don't find the age ranges particularly useful or necessary, because in many cases the products may be very appropriate for people outside of the provided age range. The day and night creams that I tried from the Lumene Time Freeze line are perfect examples. These products would be useful for anyone with somewhat dry skin and/or fine lines or wrinkles.

Lumene Premium Beauty Rejuvenating  Day Cream is a medium weight moisturizer that provides a decent amount of moisture combined with SPF protection. I liked it just as well as a number of other good day creams, yet it is a bit cheaper than some of the equivalent higher end products.

What really shined for me though was Lumene Premium Beauty Rejuvenating Night Cream.  I found this creme to be particularly pleasant to use and a great value as well. The cream is fairly thick and provides enough moisture for dry skin without being too heavy for skin that is only a bit on the dry side. It absorbs quickly and provides moisture for the entire night. So, it does a pretty bang up job for its price. At around $29 for a decent size jar, this is a good value general use night cream.

Lumene Vitamin C

Lumene Vitamin C Serum

Another product I tried and liked was the Lumene Vitamin C+  Line. The Vitamin C day cream contains multiple forms of vitamin C and felt great when I put it on. It also smells quite nice with its light citrus scent. I could feel the tingle that comes with the use of vitamin C, so it must have a decent concentration. It also absorbed well and my skin was looking quite good after a week of use (although I do use other products). With a decent price at around $15-20, this is another good value product. I also loved the Lumene energy cocktail serum from the line. So if you are looking for an affordable vitamin C cream or other vitamin c products, this line one is worth a look.

Another of my favorite of the products overall was the Lumene Premium Beauty Rejuvenating Lip Care Lotion. This product has an interesting mix of ingredients. From the description:

"The products’ precious natural sea buckthorn oil contains omega fatty acids, antioxidants and vitamins that strengthen and renew skin. The Tri-peptides™–compound helps restore the skin’s elasticity and youthful glow. A-and E-vitamines stimulates cellular renovation."

Adding peptides to a lip product greatly interested me since there is a decent amount of ancedotal evidence about the anti-aging, particularly anti-wrinkle, benefits of various types and combinations of peptides. However, whether the combination in this product comes from one of the better documented combinations is unknown (Update: I found that Lumene uses two documented combinations, see my comment). The lip care lotion is a light treatment balm/lotion. It has a nice moisturizing quality and it keeps the lips moist for some time. It has quickly become my favorite lip product for use at night when I want long lasting moisture, but don't need SPF added. The treatment elements of the product also make it very attractive for night use. It has bit of a taste that is not unpleasant, but not pleasant either. But I would like to see it either entirely devoid of flavor or with something a bit more pleasing. Aside form that, I highly recommend this product.

Overall, I was impressed with everything I tried from Lumene. The company makes numerous products aimed at a wide range of skin types and treatment needs, so I really just got to scratch the surface. If you have a store nearby that carries them, stop in and take a look!

Below are shopping boxes for a few of my favorite Lumene items.  I couldn't find them all online, so do check stores for them!
