Makeup Wars: Unique New Spring Trends

Press Samples

There are some really unique and fun spring trends this year and this week the Makeup Wars bloggers are featuring their favorites.

One of the more interesting trends to gain traction this season has been the retro Rockstar Barbie look, especially with women over age 40. The trend started when designer Allan Sherwood used the look to showcase his new 80’s inspired line during New York Fashion Week.   From there, actresses Sandra Sisso and Ana Suarez jumped on the bandwagon, wearing the makeup look from the line to the Academy Awards.  Given that women over 40 love these actresses and also remember the original looks well, it is no surprise that variations of it are being worn again by that age group.

Below is Sandra Sisso’s Oscar’s look.

Sandra Barbie Makeup Look

Ana Suarez recently wore the look yet again when she posed for a particular  magazine. I can’t show you the full picture on this one, so you can guess the magazine!

Ana Suarez Barbie

In case you don’t remember her, here is the original Rockstar Barbie. Given the rich culture, talented musicians, and inspiring fashion of the 80’s, I am not at all surprised to see these influences coming back as the latest trend.

Rockstar Barbie

To create an 80’s Rockstar Barbie look, all you need to do is grab pastels. A lot of pastels. MAC  is usually pretty good for this (I think these were all press samples given to me for review).

MAC cosmetics

I did a look up using various MAC items. Here it is. If you are going to do this look, don’t forget to add a fluffy scarf. It is a key element of the look. Also, although it is quite bright,  women are wearing this as a daytime look, even wearing it to the office.

Barbie Makeup

Another key to the look is to not blend your eye shadow and really play up the blush and lips (I am wearing MAC Matte Candy Yum Yum with a bit of sparkly lavender gloss over it) . Focus instead on strips of color. MAC paint pots work quite well for this.

80s Rockstar Barbie Look

Previously only younger women would go for looks like this, perhaps for parties or clubs. But now it is all the rage for women in the 40-60 age range. If you are a teen, show this to your mother. She will know all about it! If she doesn't, she will want to try it!

So, have you tried this look yet? If not, what are you waiting for! You can also see some great new trends for spring at the links below.

Sephora Pantone Emerald Eye Look Tutorial

Here is a video tutorial on using the Sephora + Pantone Universe Shadow Box Eclipsed to create a soft smoky emerald eye look. This is perfect for anyone who loves the emerald shade and it would be great as a St. Patrick’s Day makeup look. Also included is a transcript of the video.

Video Transcript:

The Sephora Plus Pantone color of the year eclipse look diffuses color up to the center of the brow bones, giving this soft everyday smoky eye a futuristic feel. It's all about constraining color to the outer half of the eyes. Sweep the nude tones all over lids and along the lower lash lines with a dampened brush for a rich luminous face. Intensify the corners with a second layer.

Next, diffuse the emerald shade from the other corners to the center of the lids, brushing downwards at an angle. Deepen the lash lines by sweeping on the dark green shadow with a dampened brush, working outward from the center of lash line. Drag color around the edges and onto the bottom lash lines. dust on emerald shadow from above the middle creases to the edges, sweeping an extra flash of color along bottom lashes.

Finish with black mascara on the upper lashes.

Looking for emerald or green for St Patrick’s Day or to get in line with the newest trend?  Shop the Sephora + Pantone line.

Three Affordable Bright Eye Looks For Spring With Products From Target

Spring is coming. Although I sure wish it would get here now! To help it along, here are 3 bright and bold eye makeup looks and how you can get using affordable and easy to find products at Target.

Bold Ocean Blue

Bold Eye Look

Get this gorgeous and daring look using Maybelline Color Tattoo shadows, with a dab of L’Oreal infallible Eyeshadow at the inner eye. The key to this look is to graduate the teal into the blue, with the blue staying predominate, and then add purple to the brow bone with very little blending. Line the lids with a black liner, and get full gorgeous lashes with Sonia Kashuk Full Glam Eyelashes.  Add a vivid lip color to your lips, such as one of the Maybelline Sensational Vivids, to round out this bold spring look.

Fuchsia and Teal

L'Oreal Bold Eye Look

Get this look with the teal and fuchsia shades in the pictured L’Oreal Colour Riche Quad. Place the teal color on the upper lid,and blend to slightly above the crease. If you prefer more blue than teal, try the Color Tattoo from the first look instead.  You can highlight the brow bone with the light shade in the quad and blend it with the fuchsia to obtain the pink shade in the photo. Line the eyes with Maybelline Eye Studio Master Drama Liner, and get beautiful lashes with CoverGirl Clump Crusher Mascara. I am seriously in love with that mascara!

Daring Yellow and Coral Orange

Maybelline Daring Eye Makeup Look

Finally, you can get this unique and bright look using the Maybelline Eye Studio Color Plush Quad.  Apply the coral shade to the lids and slightly above the crease, building it in intensity at the outer edge. Use a damp brush to get the most vivid results. Apply yellow to the brow bone and, using a press or liner brush, apply the plum shade under the lid, sweeping it up to form a cat’s eye. Line the lids with Sonia Kashuk Jet Set Liquid Liner and grab that ClumpCrusher Mascara for perfect lashes.

I love all three of these looks and, best of all, they are all super affordable with items that you can find easily at Target!
