Vegan Fashion’s Night Out In NYC

Vegan Fashion's Night Out in NYC While thousands of fashionistas were swarming the streets of New York City for the 3rd annual Fashion’s Night Out last week, with popular destinations like the Kardashian’s store Dash in Soho, Bloomingdales on Upper East Side, or chi chi boutiques in the meat-packing district, vegan style mavens spent the evening in the chill Lower East Side at NYC’s only all vegan shoe and accessories store Moo Shoes.

Moo Shoes’ Fashion’s Night Out celebration featured hot vegan clothing and accessories designers including Leanne Mai-ly Hilgart of Vaute Couture, Gina Ferraraccio and Julie Dicterow of Cri De Coeur, and representing men’s vegan fashion Joshua Katcher, a.k.a. The Discerning Brute with his line Brave Gentle Man. Of course no vegan event would be complete without some vegan fare. There was vegan wine from The Vegan Vine, vegan s'mores from Sweet & Sara's and little mini cakes from Sherry's Short Cakes.

So what’s not vegan when it comes to clothing and apparel? Leather, fur, wool, feathers, and silk to name a few.

When most people think of vegan clothing, shoes or handbags, they think hemp, plastic and fugly fabics. Yet many vegan designers today are turning out stunningly gorgeous work and using innovation to create eco-friendly, cruelty-free materials out of things like recycled TV sets and the string from the soybean pod. With this ingenuity, they’ve managed to achieve functional and aesthetically beautiful products that any fashionista or style-conscious guy would be proud to wear. V

Vegan Fashion's Night Out at Moo Shoes was a glorious celebration of vegan style, food and fashion.

Lindsay Lohan, Fashion Week, Cynthia Rowley, and Band-Aids

The Cynthia Rowley fashion week show had a a bit of drama when a photographer jumped on the runway before the show to try to get a picture of Lindsay Lohan, who was sitting in the front row. The Lindsay Lohan Fashion Week appearance reportedly also caused quite a stir, something that I don’t quite understand. Celebrities are common at fashion week, and Lohan’s presence should not have been a huge shock. In any event, the photographer ended up with a confiscated camera and revoked credentials, and the room and Lindsay Lohan all reportedly applauded. And, by the way, it is possible to get photos without being improper. Here is Lindsay sitting in the front row at the Cythia Rowely show. I'm quite sure that this photographer did not jump on the catwalk to take the picture.

Also of interest in regard to Cynthia Rowley is the line of Band-Aids (yes Band Aids) that was pre-released as part of Fashion’s Night Out. I think designer Band-Aids are just plain silly, but I admit that I am also intrigued. I have been known to wear Hello Kitty Band-Aids, so why not step up to covering my ouchies with Cynthia Rowley? It certainly could be a step toward reforming my tacky ways.

Cynthia Rowley Band Aids

As for the clothes at the Cynthia Rowley show, I would love to show them, but I don’t have access to any licensed images at the moment, so you get celebrity gossip and Band-Aids instead!  I'll have real fashion photos when I get some.

About New York Fashion Week

fashion week cloud

Many models and designers live for Fashion Week, as being there shows that they have the best of the latest fashions soon to hit the market. New York Fashion Week which, as is obvious by the name takes place in New York twice each year—once in February to showcase fall fashions for later that year, and agian in September to showcase items for spring of the following year.

A Brief History of New York Fashion Week

Fashion Week was once known as Press Week. Everyone around the fashion world knew about the event. The first fashion week took place in 1943. World War II was in full swing and France was previously where people looked to for designs. However, due to the war, Paris became unavailable as a travel option for fashion industry insiders.  As a result Eleanor Lambert, a fashion publicist, formed Press Week to showcase the work of American designers for journalists in the fashion industry.

Press Week was as a success, resulting in an increased focus by magazines American design.  Therefore, in 1994 the event was moved to tents in Bryant Park. Attendance was limited to invitation only, and the event gained an air of prestige with many from the fashion industry, the press, celebrities, and more in attendance.

By 2009, some designers were opting out for smaller and more affordable shows where they didn’t have to pay as much due to the downturn of the economy. Technology  allowed designers other outlets for showcasing their works. There were many who were only selling online as of 2009.  Also, some designers found that they had to think outside the box in order to get a tent. Fashion week was expensive, and designers were struggling. So, they worked around obstacles and saved some money.  Thus, in 2010, fashion week moved away from Bryant Park and is now hosted in Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts.

The September 2011 New York Fashion week kicks off on September 8. Watch for continuing coverage of the events here on Beauty and Fashion Tech and on Glam Media at the Fashion Week Insider section.
