Guest Review: Olay ProX Anti-Aging Skin Care
Today brings a guest post from Kylee Baumle, who writes a beautiful gardening blog, Our Little Acre, a site that is also full of wonderful photography and a good dose of cat stories! Read below for Kylee’s review:
Around the age of forty, I started thinking maybe I should consider taking better care of my skin. When fifty rolled around, I wished I’d taken better care of it at twenty and thirty. I’ve always been a fan of Olay Regenerist products, especially the Daily Serum, so when I started seeing their new ProX products being advertised, I checked them out. ProX is clinically proven to stimulate skin to perform much like it did when it was younger by increasing turnover of the surface cells and repairing the moisture barrier. In addition to costing a fraction of what department store products do, as an introduction incentive Olay was offering a $10 discount at the time of purchase of their Anti-Aging Starter Kit, which retails for about $60. Their guarantee promised my money-back if I wasn’t satisfied with the performance of their products, so I bought them.
Included in the starter kit were: Eye Restoration Complex .3 oz tube, Age Repair Lotion with SPF 30 1 oz. pump, and Wrinkle Smoothing Cream 1 oz jar. I was to use the Eye Restoration both morning and evening, the Age Repair Lotion in the morning, and the Wrinkle Smoothing Cream at night. As one who has a hard time following any kind of skin care regimen, this was a challenge to me. But I’d spent enough money on the kit and I truly wanted to see results, so I vowed to stick with it.
After just one week of using the kit, I noticed that my skin felt softer. At somewhere around two to three weeks usage, my skin looked slightly smoother. It’s been five weeks now and I like how my skin feels and looks. To be honest, the results aren’t dramatic, but they are enough that I will keep using it and have already purchased a second starter kit.
None of the products felt greasy, which was a relief to me. I had somewhat oily skin as a teenager and shunned moisturizers for years after that because I hated that greasy feel that most gave me. I am a side sleeper and did notice that my skin felt slightly sticky where it touched the pillow. It wasn’t enough to be all that annoying however.
The ProX products have a very slight fragrance – something somewhat medicinal in nature – but not strong enough to be objectionable. I wish they’d used whatever fragrance is in their Regenerist Daily Serum, as I think that one is quite nice. Because the regimen is different in the morning than it is in the evening, I was more diligent about sticking with the program and only missed a morning or two. I have never missed a night of using the products.
There are three other products in the line: Deep Wrinkle Treatment, Discoloration Fighting Concentrate, and Hydra Firming Cream. I’d like to try each of those, especially the latter two.

Olay Definity Foaming Moisturizer and Protective Lotion
When I first started writing Beauty and Fashion Tech, I reviewed Olay Definity. I loved it then and I still love it. Now I have had the opportunity to try both the Olay Definity Foam Moisturizer and the Olay Definity Facial Lotion
. Each are excellent companion products for the cream.
Olay Definity works on skin discoloration using a glucosamine complex. This relatively simple mix of glucosamine and niacinamide has been shown to lessen hyperpigmentation and melasma, thus making it worthwhile compound to add to treatment for those conditions. I tend to be sure to use one or more of the Definity products in conjunction with a melasma treatment serum such as or .
I love the Olay Foaming Moisturizer! The light foam is formulated to penetrate the skin deeper than a standard cream or lotion. It absorbs incredibly quickly and can be used with other moisturizers, but I find it particularly nice for days when my skin is extra oily because it provides very light moisture by itself that won’t overwhelm oily skin. Then on drier days, adding something over it is easy.
The correcting protective lotion is also a joy to wear. Formulated with SPF 15, this is a great light day cream that can be worn alone or over the foaming moisturizer. It absorbs quickly and fully and feels quite light, but actually provides a pretty good amount of moisture. One thing to note though is that while Olay products tend to have a light feel to them and tend to absorb fast, that doesn’t mean that the moisturizing properties are all that light. I have seen some people state that they though Olay was not moisturizing enough, but keep in mind that a cream or lotion does not have to feel heavy or leave a film on your face to provide sufficient moisture. I think people tend to underestimate the amount of moisture that Olay products actually provide. The lotion is lighter than the cream, but still quite moisturizing.
You can find Olay products at just about any drugstore or big box retailer.

Oil of Olay Definity Creme.
Hello from Texas! I am working with limited internet access for the next week, so posts might be fewer and with less links during that time.
A newer non-prescription substance for the treatment of melasma (also refered to as hyperpigmentation) is N-acetyl glucosamine, which becomes more effective when combined with niacinamide. This combination is found in the Oil of Olay Definity line of products.
Just before Definity was released, I read an excerpt of research indicating that topical N-acetyl glucosamine reduced hyperpigmentation. Shortly after, a study of combining N-acetyl glucosamine with niacinamide, the combination found in Definity, was shown to reduce hyperpigmentation even more effectively. A good article, including information about the combination study along with other melasma treatment information, can be found at
Skintherapyletter.com. Proctor and Gamble, the parent company of Olay was involved in the study. (See http://www.eurekalert.org/)
When I did a search for products with the combination, Definity was brand new and was the only product I found at that time containing both N-acytyl glucosamine and niacinamide. Since then, numerous skin lightening products have began to add either glucosamine alone or N-acetyl glucosamine, but I still find a lack of products that include the niacinamide. I purchased the Definity night creme and have gone through a couple jars of it now.
My experience using Definity for approximately the past 12-14 weeks has been pretty good. I have mild hyperpigmentation along my jaw line and have seen some dramatic lightening of the areas over the past few months. However, I have been using a fairly aggressive treatment program that includes other products. It is also winter and so my skin is seeing less sun. That makes it difficult to point to one single product or factor for my recent improvement.
Regardless, unlike some substances and products, the positive effects of the glucosamine complex is documented through scientific study. Further, unlike many melasma treatments, there are generally no side effects. So while one might pause before putting products such as hydroquinone, Retin-A, or various alpha hydroxy acids on their face, especially it the skin is sensitive, absent an unusual allergy or sensitivity, trying Definity can’t really hurt.
The only downside of using Definity for me is that at this time of year, I don’t find it moisturizing enough. Although labeled as a creme, I find it to be closer in consistency and behavior to a lotion. It is not a thick as say, Estee Lauder Daywear, and it spreads thin pretty fast. But I am feeling unusually dry this winter, and suspect when the weather warms up, it will be just fine for me. For now, I use it on the hyperpigmented areas, and then use an additional moisturizer on top of it.
