5 Places to Shop for Makeup in Chicago

There are many exciting places in Chicago to purchase makeup. Where to go depends on how much a gal wants to invest and what brand she’s looking for. Just shopping in Chicago is an exhilarating experience, but when shopping for makeup is added, it’s spectacular! Here are some great places to shop for makeup when in Chicago.

Cosmetic shopping

Make Up First

Make Up First is a makeup school owned by Jill Glaser and located on LaSalle Street. Here someone can get her makeup done, learn techniques and purchase professional makeup kits. It will be a vendor at the annual makeup show which is scheduled for June. If a gal’s serious, Make Up First is her one-stop shop for makeup.

Neiman Marcus

If a gal would like to add to her Chicago experience in addition to shopping for makeup, she can visit Neiman Marcus which is located on Michigan Avenue. This is the place to go if she’s looking for top brands such as Lancôme, LaPrarie, Armani, Chanel, Yves Saint Laurent or Bobbi Brown. She can buy after getting pampered by a professional makeup expert.

Lush

Lush is located on Armitage Avenue and in the Michigan Avenue Macy’s. Lush is a revolutionary idea in makeup, skin care and body care. Lush is handmade and offers vegan items. Although Lush doesn’t offer an extensive line of makeup, if a handmade, mineral oil-free, vegan and globally-aware product line is appealing, then Lush is the brand to go to.

Ulta

If a gal would like to go with all of the brands that she knows and is comfortable with, than she should visit the Ulta location on North Avenue. This is a great location to pick up items from Urban Decay and other brands.

Sephora

Sephora offers the same brands as Ulta along with its own line. Sephora offers such brands as BareMinerals, Urban Decay, Shiseido, Nars and Dior.

All of these Chicago locations provide trusted brands along with technical advice. Whether she’s visiting Chicago or already lives there, the makeup maven will find exactly what she wants!

30 Days of Beauty, Day 30: The Best Beauty Products, What The Bloggers Use

Below are over 70 favorites from beauty bloggers with their comments on why they love these items.

Foundation and Concealer

Marcia Friedman of Beauty Info Zone: IT Cosmetics by Jamie Kern Bye Bye UnderEye- this really does help eliminate those pesky dark circles plus it's a great concealer for anywhere on your face.

Rebecca Kelsey Sampson from Rebecca Kelsey: Out of all of the foundations I've tried, the mark. Min-a-Real mineral cream foundation is my favorite. It is very bendable and lasts all day. My favorite way to apply it is with a wet Beauty Blender because then it looks like I have flawless skin rather then a lot of makeup on.

Melissa of The Makeup Divas: Giorgio Armani Lasting Silk Foundation: It gives me a flawless yet natural finish. Does a great job of covering up my imperfections.

Nancy Houlmont from Beauty 411 also loves Armani foundation (as do we here at Beauty and Fashion Tech): Whenever people ask about "favorite" beauty products, I think back to products that I re-purchase over and over, regardless of how many new products I try on a daily basis.  For me, one of those products is Giorgio Armani Foundation.  I've used this foundation for years and regardless of the formula (Luminous Silk, Lasting Silk, Designer Lift), I love the flawless application, the silky feel and the perfect coverage.

Cindy Bokma from Hello Dollface loves Yves St Laurent Touche Eclat concealer and Tarte Amazonian Clay Foundation.

Courtney of Phyrra.net loves NARS Sheer Glow foundation in Siberia, stating:
I love NARS Sheer Glow foundation in Siberia because it's a perfect match for my skintone. It's so difficult to find a neutral foundation that neutralizes my pink overtones and coordinates with my yellow-cream-beige undertones. When I want a liquid, this is the way I go.

Courtney also loves Meow Cosmetics Pampered Puss foundation in Inquisitive Siamese: This was the first foundation of any type that was a perfect match for my skin! It's a mineral foundation, made with 4 ingredients: mica, titanium dioxide, zinc oxide and iron oxides and it wears like a second skin. I absolutely love it.

Christine Mikesell of Fifteen Minute Beauty Fanatic: Make Up For Ever Full Cover Concealer:  I have a few under eye issues (I'm a mommy and I'm often on call at home, that doesn't leave much sleeping time!) and this is my current favorite for making myself look awake.  This concealer is very pigmented but still is easy to blend and it covers everything all day long.

Beauty and Fashion Tech and Girl Gloss Fav: We love Make Up For Ever High Definition Foundation and Duo Matte Powder Foundation.

Tinted Moisturizer

Aprill Coleman from Glitter Gloss Garbage loves this item, which is also a Beauty and Fashion Tech favorite: NARS Tinted Moisturizer- A tinted moisturizer with properties of a BB cream yet dark enough for my skin! This tinted moisturizers gives my skin a beautiful glow and keeps my skin hydrated!

Powder and Setting Spray

Courtney of Phyrra.net loves Silk Naturals Blur Finishing Powder, stating:
I've tried a lot of finishing powders, but this one is my favorite! It really lives up to its name and blurs all imperfections in the skin.

Cindy Bokma from Hello Dollface recommends TooFaced Primed & Poreless powder and Skindinavia Makeup Finish.

Mascara

Brooke Pakulski of: Blushing NoirGiorgio Armani Eyes to Kill Mascara (the original) because it really provides nice volume and thickness with just one coat!  It's pricey, but worth it!

Lisamarie Wilson from Beauty Crazed: L'Oreal Voluminous Mascara - although I cheat all the time with other mascaras, this is the one I always go running back to! Volume, length and no flaking! (Note: this is also a Beauty and Fashion Tech favorite among the drugstore mascaras).

Christine Mikesell of Fifteen Minute Beauty Fanatic: CoverGirl LashBlast Fusion Mascara:  This mascara is goofproof for me!  I can apply it quickly, just slopping it on and the results are always perfect.  It gives me length, volume and holds all day without clumping.  Love it! (Note: this is another Beauty and Fashion Tech favorite as well)

Here at Beauty and Fashion Tech, we particularly love Fiberwig for a tubing mascara, along with Kevyn Aucoin Mascara. You can read our reviews here: Fiberwig Mascara Review and Kevyn Aucoin Mascara Review

For non-tubing options, our favorites are the cult classic Diorshow, and just about any of the Lancome mascaras.

Eye Shadow and Liner

Heather Walczuk from Beauty Unbiased: Stila cosmetics In the Light eyeshadow palette- My go to eyeshadow picks for this season featuring very wearable neutrals and bold colors for more dramatic looks.

Emily Hudspeth: Emily Hudspeth-Bringing the Beauty to You loves
MAC Fluidline Eyeliner in Midnight Snack: Use an angle brush to apply this liner. I like to set it with a powder for long lasting results. This is a limited edition color.  (I made a YouTube video but I haven't gotten it edited yet), depending on when you post this, it could be up if you want the link to it.

Emily also loves Maybelline Color Tattoo Shadow: This was a really random drugstore purchase. One day I just needed a pick me up and I grabbed this orange color. Let me tell you, I fell in LOVE! It is beautiful on its own and has so much versatility when layered with pigment (which is what I did in the video I sent). I loved it so much I had to go back and get the taupe shade too! This is a must have.

Marcia Friedman from Beauty Info Zone: Bare Minerals The Scenic Route eyeshadow duo - one of the best green eyeshadows I've encountered. It has just the right amount of shimmer and it lasts all day.

Melissa of The Makeup Divas: Sue Devitt Eye Intensifier Pencil: This pencil glides on smooth like silk and feels like velvet on the lids. It's water resistant and smudge-proof to which is a plus! (Note: we also love this one here at Beauty and Fashion Tech).

Melissa also recommends another Beauty and Fashion Tech favorite: LORAC Eye Shadows: All LORAC eye shadows are the best. They are heavily pigmented and great quality. Beautiful colors to choose from.

Gaia Fishler of The Non-Blonde: Dior Grege (734) 5 Couleurs - New Look Eyeshadow Palette - Proving that neutral colors are anything but boring, Dior Grege is the palette I reach for when I'm short on time or inspiration, but have to make sure my makeup is impeccable.  (Note: Here at Beauty and Fashion Tech, Dior is often our go to shadow.)

Courtney from Phyrra.net says:I can't really choose a favorite for eye shadow because I love so many! Fyrinnae, BftE Cosmetics, Sugarpill, Inglot, Urban Decay, Evil Shades, DreamWorld, Silk Naturals, Concrete Minerals, Geek Chic, Kiss My Sass, Venomous, Darling Girl... so hard to choose! Other products were much easier.

Courtney also suggests Fyrinnae Pixie Epoxy: This is an amazing product. It allows you to have the look of foiled eyeshadow without the wetness and the mess. It revolutionized eyeshadows for me.

Blush

Emily Hudspeth of Emily Hudspeth-Bringing the Beauty to You: Benefit Cheek Stain and High Beam Highlighter: A friend of mine recommended this product so many times as her favorite. When I saw this 3 pack of little samplers at Sephora, I gave it a whirl. I cannot tell you how much I fell in LOVE with this product. They also have an orange, peachy tint that I think is called CHA CHA. That is next on my list. The high beam is a beautiful highlighter. You can use the cheek colors alone or layer which a powder blush to set (in the video). Bonus! You can also use them as lip stains. Seriously, how great is that!

Marcia Friedman from Beauty Info Zone: Youngblood Cream blush in Taffeta and Tropical Glow - these blushes have excellent long lasting pigment and a wonderful consistency

Lip Products

Sharzad Kiadeh of LuxLyfe: Here is a favorite product that I have loved since I discovered it: 100% Pure Fruit Pigmented Lip and Cheek Tints (My fav colors are Pink Grapefruit and Cranberry). Everything from 100 Percent Pure Cosmetics is Organic and Vegan, which gets major brownie points in my book. The fact that the products actually perform is an added bonus!  I especially love this product because it can be used on lips AND cheeks! These are an absolute must when I travel.

Lisamarie Wilson from Beauty Crazed: Fresh Sugar Passion Lip Treatment - an amazing smelling balm and colour in one easy (and cool metal) package! (This is also a Girl Gloss favorite)

Laura Yoder of 24-7 Style: Maybelline Baby Lips: I use Cherry Me and although the color looks pretty drastic, it's a just right sheer amount of juicy punch.  Plus your lips feel heavenly!

Laura also recommends Maybelline Colorsensational Lipstain: I find people are scared-to-death of lipstain because generally, stains are pretty color-laden.  What's good about stains though is that while the color can be intense, it somehow comes out just-right when on.  Think about popsicle stained lips from childhood.  Once again, I felt like I was "cheating" on my high-end stain when I tried this.  The truth is, it's perfect.  Put it on clean lips (no balm or anything), wait for it to dry, and then apply a clear balm (I of course use Smith's Rosebud Salve).

Courtney at Phyrra.net loves Morgana Cryptoria lipsticks and lipglosses: Morgana makes lipsticks and lipglosses in all sorts of unusual and hard to find shades including turquoise and green! They're pigmented and they're moisturizing on the lips.

Courtney also recommends Evil Shades Lipsticks: Evil Shades makes some really awesome lipstick colors. She even somehow managed to make a matte metallic hot pink that is to die for.

Sara Lopez from Beauty Beginner: bareMinerals Pretty Amazing lipcolor in Strength
The day that I first applied this true red, glossy, long-wearing lipcolor changed my outlook on makeup. I always thought that I couldn't pull off a red lip until I wore this around like a rock star for a day. It made me realize that makeup is whatever I want it to be, and my face is the canvas.

Primers

Aprill Coleman from Glitter Gloss Garbage: Benefit Stay Don’t Stray Primer- My favorite primer of them all because it doubles as a concealer. Lasts for up to 16 hours and keeps my eyeshadow flawless!

Courtney of Phyrra.net: Too Faced Shadow Insurance: Like Old Faithful, this has been my constant companion since I started wearing eyeshadow all the time. It keeps my eyeshadows crease free and vibrant.

Cindy Bokma: Hello Dollface likes L’Oreal Magic Lumi light Primer.

Krystal Seidel from Polish Galore recommends one of our favorites: Urban Decay Primer Potion (available in original, Eden, Sin, and Greed). I’m in love with Urban Decay Primer Potion (also known as UPDD) because it provides a great base for your eyelids to really make your eye shadow pop and last all day without creasing or fading away!  I prefer the “Eden” potion because it’s a neutral matte base, perfect for all finishes and colors.  The squeeze tube tip allows you to control how much product you use and the new design allows you to get every ounce inside.  Definitely a must have for any eye shadow lover!

Laura Yoder at 24-7 Style: Rimmel's Fix and Perfect Primer: I think primer is a must if you wear foundation.  I was willing to pay big bucks for anything to help conceal my pores and make my makeup last just a little bit longer.  When Rimmel came out with this though, on a whim I bought it (thinking it would be inferior to anything I had).  It actually is the best I've ever used...everything you would expect a primer to do for the lowest price I've ever paid!

Eye Creams

Heather Walczuk from Beauty Unbiased recommends skynICELAND eye gel pads - These reduce puffiness, firm and moisturize in 10 minutes flat.

Heather also likes Caudalie Premier Cru the Eye Cream- This eye cream is lightweight and soaked up by the skin, but also extremely moisturizing and long
lasting.

Skin Care

Rebecca Kelsey Sampson of Rebecca Kelsey: My favorite skincare product is the X Out Wash-In Treatment. Within two months my blemishes diminished over 90%. I've never had a product work so well. I don't follow it as directed though. I use it two to three times a week rather then twice a day since my skin is dry and sensitive, yet it still works!

Gaia Fishler at The Non-Blonde Paula's Choice Paula's Choice RESIST Intensive Wrinkle-Repair Retinol Serum- While I don't believe in miracles, there's no arguing with an improved and more even skin texture. Surprisingly, it doesn't even require taking a second mortgage.

Victoria Girard from RevealGreatSkin.com loves the DPL Therapy System: I love this hand-free LED light therapy system.  It gives my skin a healthy glow while making it look younger and more vibrant.

Victoria also uses the Clarisonic cleansing brush: The Carisonic brush really helps to wake up my skin in the morning and does a great job of thoroughly cleansing and prepping my skin.

Cindy Bokma at Hello Dollface uses Aveeno Positively Radiant Cleanser

Sunscreen

Courtney at Phyrra.net: LaVanilla The Healthy Face SPF 40. This is my holy grail moisturizer with SPF. I use it on my face, eyes and neck and it not only moisturizes but protects me from the sun. It's not too heavy, it's not too light, it's just right. It doesn't irritate my skin, either. LOVE it!

Cindy Bokma: Hello Dollface uses Arcona Reozone spf20.

Hair Care

Tera Rae Stephens: Tera Rae Stephens loves these ORIBE products:

ORIBE Supershine Moisturizing Cream:Used in wet or dry hair, it makes hair super soft and shiny.

ORIBE Soft Lacquer Hairspray: The best spray for heat styling!  Soft hold with memory so you can work through your curls until they are perfect.

ORIBE Dry Texture Spray: For huge volume and sexy texture. Beachy hair with out feeling dirty and also is fantastic as a dry shampoo when sprayed at the roots.

Tera also loves Davines Melu Shampoo and Conditioner: Hands down the best for long hair and extensions. Add tons of moisture and makes combing out wet hair a breeze!

Laura Yoder from 24-7 Style recommends Bumble & Bumble Surf Spray: I hoard this...it's the only product I don't share with friends.  #Selfish

Laura also loves Nick Chavez Amazon Hair Body Building Spray: This was fabulous for volume to my styled hair, but I loved it even more when I used it along with my regular gel on my towel dried hair.  It left me with such amazing texture and volume...I didn't even need to do anymore styling after my blow dry.

Lisamarie Wilson from Beauty Crazed: Oscar Blandi Volumizing Dry Shampoo Spray - I don't know what I did before dry shampoo! This one is especially great because it is meant for darker hair which means no white film!

Bath and Body

Laura Yoder at 24-7 Style: Smith's Rosebud Salve.  I love the Vintage Tins and although all the scents are divine, I use the original.  Yes, it's perfect for your lips, but just the teeniest amount also works for your dry hands and in the winter, again just the smallest amount rubbed between your palms and then smoothed on your hair takes away static without weighing hair down.

Laura also recommends Three Whishes Body Scrub by Whish: O to the M-G this is amazing!  Completely takes the "itch" out of my dry winter skin. She also loves Daily Squeeze All Day Hand and Body Lotion: Rich, creamy and luxurious.  It soaks into your skin in seconds and leaves you silky smooth.

Emma J from: The Journey of an NY Actress: I use Lemon Butter Cuticle Cream by Burt's Bees. It is especially good for traveling and the tiny tin gets through airport security (and I'm always on the lookout for products that I can take on the plane).

Self-Tanning

Laura Yoder from 24-7 Style: Banana Boat Summer Color Self Tanning Mist $6.49 at Target: I was low on cash and couldn't buy my normal "low-end" self tanner.  I'm not a huge fan of the scent, but it's not the worst, especially when I'm left with BROWN color.  Goes on super easy, no rubbing or streaking at all!

Nails

Lisamarie Wilson at Beauty Crazed: Essie Good to Go Top Coat - I find it almost impossible to sit still long enough for my manicure to dry properly so  top coat that cuts the drying time in half is a god-send!

Jennifer Mathews from My Beauty Bunny: NCLA is a cruelty free, Los Angeles-based, indie nail polish brand that (IMHO) have successfully married nail colors with high fashion. I really like the small brushes that allow an easy and clean application. The formulas are amazing. They are free of DBP, toulene, formaldehyde and camphor, and they are by far the best I have ever used. Wow. Easy application. No bubbling up. No dripping, smearing, etc. It’s not all hype – this is amazing stuff.

Courtney at Phyrra.net: Cult Nails nail polish. I love the colors! Their Get it On basecoat is holy grail material for me. They've got so many great polishes, especially for layering.

Brushes

Melissa: The Makeup Divas: Sephora Pro Air Brush #55: This brush provides the best coverage without any lines. You get a smooth natural look. It's an absolute must have.

Christine Mikesell from Fifteen Minute Beauty Fanatic: Beauty Blender sponge: This strange egg thing has made my foundation look much more natural. It really is better than the little wedge shaped sponge.

Madeleine Homes of Peace Love Lipgloss also loves the Beauty Blender: For make-up tools, I adore the Beauty Blender Sponge. When used damp any one can easily apply their foundation for a professional airbrushed look. (Note: This is also a Beauty and Fashion Tech favorite item).

Emily Hudspeth of Emily Hudspeth-Bringing the Beauty to You :My favorite brush to use is a stippling brush. In my personal makeup bag, I use the Sephora brand stippling brush, $35. I have the same brush in my professional kit.

Makeup Removal

Emily Hudspeth of Emily Hudspeth-Bringing the Beauty to You loves Almay Makeup Eraser Sticks: These Q-tips filled with makeup remover can be a quick fix for a makeup blunder. You just snap the end of (the end with the purple ring around the top) and the remover saturates the tip that you will use to clean up the mess. This is a must have for your makeup bag.

Christine Mikesell: Fifteen Minute Beauty Fanatic: Neutrogena Naturals Fresh Cleansing & Makeup Remover: This facial cleanser does it all. It comes in an easy to use pump, can be used with my Clarisonic or just fingertips, and it even removes all of my eye makeup without a second product.

Fragrance

Gaia Fishler of: The Non-Blonde: Tauer Perfumes L'Air du Desert Marocain- A mysterious, sweet and bewitching perfume that takes me on a journey to faraway lands.

Makeup Shopping, Where and How

Makeup can be purchased in many locations. Drugstores and big box retailers have many affordable makeup options, while department and specialty stores offer mid to high end products and normally allow testing of the products in store. Online stores often are a great way to shop in order to price compare and view many different products and sometimes have nice bonus items, but they do make it harder in terms of testing products before purchasing.  Today we provide our favorite places to shop, along with some shopping tips.

30 Days of Beauty Day 15, All About Shopping for Makeup

makeup shopping

Before getting into shopping sources, what should you look for in makeup when shopping? Mara Moss: from Makeup By Mara Moss gave us these great tips:

When shopping for makeup , I find it useful to walk around with the makeup on for a while before purchasing it. I like to do this because I have noticed two things often happen after the makeup is on for longer than a few seconds.

(1) The color may change a little. (And/or your perception of the color may) Just like when you have a manicure and the polish oxidizes and becomes darker a day or two later, makeup often takes a little while to “settle” on your face. For example, what first looks like a bright red may be less bright after it acclimates to your lips for a little.

(2) The makeup may appeal to your senses in a different way than you originally thought.

a. Feeling - The lipstick you thought was moisturizing may become more matte and drying the longer it is on. Or the mascara you thought was very heavy feeling, just needed to dry and settle on your eyelids, and now you no longer notice it is there.

b. Smell- some lipsticks have a heavy perfume to them. You may like the smell at first and then after a few minutes find it bothers you. Or just the opposite, you may love the smell/taste and find that you keep rubbing your lips together or are too preoccupied.

(3) While the makeup looks beautiful in the case and on your lips, it is does funky things five minutes after you walk away from the counter. For example, every time you turn around your long hair gets stuck to the high performing lip gloss you just tried on.

Meanwhile, Alicia Mohr from Things to Cherish gave a great beauty savings tip: “Stock up on high end beauty brands during the holidays. Brands that often don't offer discounts during the year offer sets a great values during November and December.”

Related to Alica’s tip, we often recommend buying MAC brush kits at the holidays. It can be a great way to get some quality brushes at great prices.

The Best Makeup Brands and Where to Buy Them

While it would be impossible to list every single quality makeup brand, and any brand tends to have both hit and miss items, here are a few of our favorites across several price points, along with favorite stores.

Best Drugstore Makeup Brands

When shopping for bargain cosmetics, several drugstore brands stand out:

Wet and Wild: This super affordable brand tends to pack decent quality into their eye shadows, and they provide many color options.

Milani: For pigment packed shadow and blush this is go to brand. Milani also makes excellent mascara and nail polishes.

NYX: This is another ultra affordable brand with surprisingly good quality for the price.

Sally Hansen Natural Beauty: The Natural Beauty line has great primers and foundations along with some lovely lip colors.

L’Oreal: Although L’Oreal is on the pricier end  of drugstore cosmetics, it provides super pigmented items in its HIP line, quality mascara and eyeliners, and has a wide range of foundation shades.

Favorite Department Store and Specialty Brands

Make Up For Ever: Yet another brand with high pigment and high quality items. Make Up Forever is especially known for their waterproof and water resistant items and high definition makeup. Their aqua eyes liners are also some of the best around with a huge range of shades.

Bobbi Brown: Our top choice for anyone who wants a natural look. Bobbi Brown puts out more neutral and natural looking products than just about anyone else and the items are all high quality.

Chanel, Dior, and YSL: These three are pricey but always wonderful. We particularly love Dior’s five colour  shadow palettes and Chanel and YSL’s lip products.

Estee Lauder: Estee Lauder is one of our favorites for basic skin care products and creamy lipsticks.

Lancome: Lancome also offers particularly nice lip products and is a favorite for mascara.
