5 Relaxing Bath Solutions You Can Do for Practically Nothing

We all love to take a relaxing bath but things like bubbles, oils and store bought solutions can get expensive. Don’t you wish there was a way that you could make your own bath solutions form things you already had around the house? Well, you can! Here are five relaxing baths that you can make with little effort or expense:

bath

  1. Rosewater and coconut milk – This simple bath fills the air with the beautiful scent of roses and sooths your skin with the nourishing creaminess of coconut milk. Just add a quarter of a cup of each to your bath water. To make your own rose water take the petals from a rose, the more fragrant the better, and add to very hot (almost boiling) water. Let steep and then strain and store in a bottle. One large rose can scent up to four cups of water. Coconut milk is inexpensive and available in a can at most grocery stores, usually in the international aisle.
  2. Bath salts – Making bath salts at home is very simple. All you need is to mix together two cups of Epsom salts, one cup of sea salt, one half of a cup of baking soda, and a few drops of essential oils. You can use lavender oil for relaxation. This recipe will last you several baths and can be stored easily. The salts scrub away dead skin while the baking soda balances your pH and the oil fills the air with fragrance.
  3. Dried lavender and chamomile –If you have some dying cut flowers about or if you have a garden and dry your own flowers than this could be just the bath for you. The petals from two sprigs of dried lavender and two bags of chamomile tea added to your bath water fills the air with a wonderful relaxing scent and smoothes away wrinkles and skin irritations. Gentle enough for everyday use.
  4. Lemon and honey – Honey is known for its antibacterial properties and lemon restores skin so between the two of them this relaxing bath will give your skin a smooth and healthy glow. Just add two teaspoons of lemon juice, preferably fresh, and one tablespoon of honey to a very warm bath. Swirl around until honey is dissolved and then relax.
  5. Milk and vanilla – Milk baths have long been used to get rid of dead skin and revitalize the body. Adding in the calming scent of vanilla just enhances the effect. Two teaspoons of vanilla extract added to two cups of powdered milk can be mixed into the bath until dissolved. Then take a long soak and feel the lactic acid working to remove all the imperfections from your skin.

These five baths are easy to make and inexpensive. You may even have all the ingredients already on hand. Just mix up a batch and get that hot water ready. Take a long soak and think about all the money you saved while still pampering yourself!

What do the Makeup Wars bloggers do to pamper themselves at home? This week you can find out!

My Top  Pampering Tips

(1) Use Epsom Salts, A Lot of Them! As a distance runner, my pampering routines almost always involve soothing sore and tired legs, and trying to improve the appearance of my feet. Something I found over time that works great for tired muscles is adding Epsom Salt  to a hot bath. A lot of runners swear by it for reducing inflammation. The key though it to add A LOT, as in at least four bags or quart cartons. Fortunately it is fairly cheap, especially if you buy it in bulk at Sam’s or Costco.

(2) Pumice Stones Are Awesome. I like a regular pumice stone for working on calluses on my feet over just about everything else. They are affordable and work well without tearing up your skin.

(3) For Tough Calluses, Grab a Ped Egg. Sometimes the pumice stone doesn’t do the trick. then, I grab my Ped Egg. The Ped Egg can shave off calluses very quickly, yet safely, and it catches the dead skin so there is no mess.  I love mine, which was originally sent to me as a press sample for review.

(4) Awesome Hair Conditioning. Another way I like to pamper myself is with deep conditioning hair treatments. I like to take Ojon and put it in my hair for a full day. Simply add it to dry hair, and then pull your hair up under an old hat for the day. Yes, it is greasy, and it does have a strong fragrance, but after a day of it in your hair, you will be left with silky smooth tresses. You can also do this with Coconut Oil, or even Olive Oil for a cheaper version. In addition, I recently tried it with DermOrganic Hair Masque (another press sample) applied to damp hair and that worked very well.

(5) Weekly Peels. I do weekly glycolic peels with either Brazilian Peel or Kate Somerville Clinic to Go. These help keep my skin looking brighter and I enjoy the tingling feel that I get from them.

Your Home Hair Spa

Take a look around your kitchen cabinet to see a host of things that will be great for your hair. Though expensive products and spa treatments have their place and can make you feel pampered and luxurious, they can burn a hole in your pocket. For more pocket friendly hair solutions, raid the kitchen everyday for lovely, lustrous hair; naturally!

Hot Oil Massage

Nothing works like a hot oil massage to treat your hair before you wash it. If possible, do this the night before shampooing or give it at least an hour or so before you shampoo: olive oil is great, but so is coconut oil, almond oil etc. Heat the oil till it is quite warm.

Then, dipping your fingers in the oil, massage your scalp working the oil in gently. Massage the entire scalp and then gently comb out your hair so that the oil spreads down each hair shaft as well. If you don’t mind doing some laundry later, wrap up your hair in a warm towel, or just tuck it up and out of the way.

Deep Conditioning Treatment

Many women swear by mayonnaise as a terrific hair conditioner. And think of it; it contains all the things that are good for the hair: vegetable oil and eggs! Another great conditioner for hair is mashed up avocado. It is the creamy, almost buttery kind of texture that the fruit has, which coats the hair shaft and smoothes frizz offering natural moisture and shine to the hair.

Combining these two ingredients is to be recommended: using full fat mayo and half a ripe avocado and mix both ingredients together to form a paste which can then be applied to the hair. Leaving it on for about 20 minutes should give it enough time to work before you rinse it out. Some women even recommend using this the same way as store bought conditioners, which can be used after shampooing the hair and which can be rinsed out same as any regular conditioner though this may not be for everyone.

An after shampoo conditioner that also recommends itself is black tea (boil tea leaves, strain and use the tea water) mixed with the juice of one lemon. Not only is this a natural conditioner, it can also be used to treat minor scalp problem such as dandruff and itchy scalp.

For oily hair it is recommended that your last rinse can be done with vinegar which helps to act as a natural astringent upon the scalp. Some recommend apple cider vinegar for its beneficial effects on hair.

Other Natural Hair Tonics

Aloe vera is known to be great for the hair and the skin and is easy to grow in a pot or anywhere. Snip off a few inches of the succulent plant and slice it to extract the gel. Simply apply this straight on to the hair and keep in on for a while before shampooing.

Honey is another natural ingredient that is great for the hair. It can be used by itself or along with line.
