How to Get a Super Easy Smooth Spring Hair Style

Disclosure: Post sponsored by Mirum but all opinions are my own.

Spring is finally getting here.  It seems like winter went on far too long!  It also means that it is time for a fresh look. I spent a lot of winter with my hair pulled up under a hat. Now it is time to let it down. If you are like me, you probably want a style that is quick and easy. I love wearing my hair straight and smooth, but I lack time to do a full blow out, and flat ironing leaves my hair too straight with no body. Well, you can get a nice smooth straight hair style without doing a ton of round brushing and flat ironing.  Here is how I got my smooth look for spring with the help of a few products that I picked up at CVS.  Using affordable, trusted brands like TRESemmé®, Dove and Suave®, you can get a quick and easy updated style for spring!

How I Got Smooth, But Not Stick Straight, Hair With Less Blowing and Ironing

As a bit of background, I have very fine hair that has natural waves and is prone to frizz.  I also tend to get oily roots, which can make it rather flat. But with the use of a few products, I can get a nice smooth look that is not ironed or round brushed, and I can do it in a rather quick period of time. Here is how.

STEP ONE: START WITH A GOOD CUT

Spring is a great time to get a fresh trim and perhaps even a whole new cut. For smooth styles, you want your hair to be free of split ends.  My hair is very slightly angled toward my face, but has very little in way of layers. That helps cut down on frizz for me, which also makes styling easier.

STEP TWO: VOLUMIZING SHAMPOO

I love starting  with a volumizing shampoo because this helps give the hair overall body and helps with lift at the roots.  TRESemmé® Thick & Full Shampoo gently cleanses away impurities for everyday washing and has a PH-balanced formula that helps to respect your hair’s delicate structure. It works great with my fine hair to keep me less oily at the roots but without weighing down my hair.

STEP TWO: A SMOOTHING CONDITIONER.

I love keratin products. They are great for fighting frizz and creating smooth looks that stay smooth. Suave® Keratin Smoothing Conditioner contains keratin and gently cleanses and seals your hair cuticles. This is a great way to give your smooth hair style a head start without having to completely iron it into submission.  I find that if I don’t use a smoothing conditioner, I might have to use a flat iron some.

STEP THREE: BLOWDRY ROOTS FIRST, THEN SMOOTH WITH THE DRYER POINTING DOWNWARD

Here is the trick to getting a smooth look without doing a full blowout on sectioned pieces of hair or a ton of ironing. Start by drying the roots, fluffing them for quicker drying and lift.  Once the roots are dry and the rest of the hair is damp, but not soaking wet, dry the remainder of your hair with the dryer pointed downward while using a vented brush to brush the hair downward. If you like a round brush, that works fine as well.  The key to the look is the constant bushing with the air pointed down.  Don’t point it straight, don’t point it up. Point it down! This goes a long way to smoothing the hair. In my case, as long as I start with the right products, it is often all that I need to do. My hair will end up smooth and straight with some body and lift at the roots.  But if I start pointing that dryer straight on or blowing upward, I will have to get out the flat iron.

STEP FOUR: USE THAT COOL SHOT BUTTON!

Almost all hair dryers include a cool shop button. If yours has one, use it! This locks in the style and increases shine and smoothness. If your dryer does not have a cool shot button, turn it to the cool setting for the same effect.

STEP FIVE: IRON MINIMALLY IF NEEDED

I rarely need to get out the flat iron for this look as long as I start with the right products. But if you do need to touch things up with an iron, work on as large of sections that will be effective and avoid ironing the roots.  This way you will have a fuller, more natural look.  I did the look for these photos with no ironing at all, and my hair is normally wavy. But those with coarser or curlier hair might still need to iron. See, even the back of my hair where it is harder to reach is smooth.

STEP SIX: QUICK TIPS TO MAKE IT LAST OR TO FRESHEN IT UP

A few tips with this style:

Use hairspray as needed. Hairspray can help keep the style smooth. But don’t overdo it! Use just enough to keep it smooth yet allow for lots of movement. My hair tends to hold styles really well, so I usually skip the spray unless I am going to be in wind or humidity.

Touch it up with dry shampoo: I wash my hair every other day to avoid damage from the blowdryer.  But, I sometimes get oily roots, especially in warmer weather. I like to use a dry shampoo on the roots when that happens. Dove Go Fresh Coconut Dry Shampoo absorbs excess oil from hair to revive it between washes.  Spray a bit on lifted sections of the roots, gently massage into the root area, and then brush through the hair. This will lift the roots back up and freshen up the look.
