Hair Beauty Essentials from the Inside Out

This is part 3 of Emma’s fall special. You can read all of Emma’s posts here.

Let’s talk hair…short hair, long hair, curly hair, straight hair….whatever your texture or style we spend a lot of time and energy on it. So today I am sharing how to effortlessly rock gorgeous, healthy hair that shines. Forget all those toxic hair products, the ultimate hair product is what you eat…

Hair is made up of protein. It is approximately 91% protein and is made up of long chains of amino acids. These chains are found within the fibers of the cortex of the hair. The amino acids of these chains are made up of the elements carbon, oxygen, hydrogen, nitrogen and sulfur. Now that we know protein is the building block of hair (and that if we don’t get enough the result is slower growth and weaker strands,), let’s get some protein!

My VegaOne start to the day….

As a vegan my protein comes from plants and grains; including quinoa, tofu and my morning VegaOne shake. I have noticed a huge difference in my hair since i introduced Vega to my life. I use the VegaOne (as seen in the snapshot). Using my NutriBullet I add organic non GMO soy milk, organic raspberries and fresh turmeric with the chocolate shake. It is delicious! I also love Vega protein and greens.

My regular beauty essential lovers know I am a huge fan of coconut oil….it has multiple uses and is superb for your hair! I take it internally and apply it externally –  I like to wear my hair slicked back with coconut oil in it and I leave it on for an entire day. The result is beautiful lustrous hair. The love of my life has now become a fan also and he uses it on his skin and for his hair. I have to say his skin is looking radiant! Why is coconut oil so damn amazing? Well 50% of the fat content in coconut oil is a fat rarely found in nature called ‘Lauric acid’. Our body converts Lauric acid into monolaurin, which has anti viral, anti bacterial and anti protozoa properties. Monolaurin is a monoglyceride that can actually destroy lipid coated viruses!!! Lauric acid is a powerful virus and gram-negative bacteria destroyer, and coconut oil contains the most Lauric acid of ANY substance on Earth! I could turn this into a coconut oil beauty essentials as there are just so many benefits. For now just know that your skin and hair will glow and you are seriously supporting your immune system while looking flawless. Love it! As a side note I also like to use it when I give my baby a massage, it is just so beneficial to your skin. When it’s absorbed into your skin and connective tissues, it helps to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles by helping to keep your connective tissues strong and supple, and aids in exfoliating the outer layer of dead skin cells, making your skin smoother. So try it for your hair, face and body….

Oil up baby! As you know it’s the ultimate internal moisturizer. So let’s look at other options. My favorite being chia seeds (they contain more omega-3s then salmon, gram for gram) and flax. Omega – 3 fatty acids support scalp health. A deficiency can lead to a dry scalp and dull hair. Omegas are literally a moisturizer from the inside out. I sometimes add coconut oil or flax to my smoothie. I add chia seeds to my water (thanks to JuicePress for that inspiration). Also try Vega Antioxidant Omega Oil Blend, it contains organic hemp oil, pumpkin seed oil, green tea seed oil, coconut oil, black cumin seed oil, black raspberry seed oil, blueberry seed oil, cranberry seed oil, pomegranate seed oil. It is my favorite blend and just fantastic for your hair and skin!! I’m such a Vega Fan!

I look at food and what it can do to support my body. When I need Vitamin A I love to bake a sweet potato. They are packed with beta-carotene, which your body converts to Vitamin A. This is a nourishing agent for your hair and skin. Vitamin A protects against dull hair and dull skin. Other sources of Vitamin A are kale, butternut squash, carrots and pumpkin. And as an added benefit I add coconut oil as a topping. Perfect!

Is anyone suffering from lack of hair growth or even baldness? A possible cause of hair loss or lack of hair growth could be iron deficiency. I get iron from my VEGA protein shake, it has 30% just in one smoothie! Other vegan sources are grains and veggies, spinach being an obvious choice. I should add that my VegaOne also contains 50% (of the hair loving) biotin – this all-in-one shake is a super power for your hair, skin and body!

Zinc is a magical mineral and I have taken it for years now. I use the New Chapter zinc  food complex supplement. Not only does it keep your immune system at optimum levels and help heal your skin, it creates gorgeous shiny healthy hair! What does it do exactly, well zinc is a mineral that regulates the production of androgens. These are hormones that, in low levels, are associated with hair loss. If you eat fish then oysters are a fabulous source of zinc.

Vitamin C is crucial for your skin and hair. It also helps absorb iron. Getting too little of this vitamin makes hair dry and weak. The best sources of vitamin C are broccoli, leafy greens, strawberries and lemons.

So love your body and it loves you back. It is all interconnected, so taking care of your self means you automatically glow from the inside out. True love is self love. Until next time beauty lovers stay flawless….
