As a distance runner, being active is an important part of my life. This year, I have some very specific running goals that also include goals to improve my diet and overall health. In just another week, I will start training for the Traverse City Bayshore Marathon in May, with the goal of qualifying for the Boston Marathon. I have been trying to qualify for Boston for awhile now, and I plan to make a big push at it this year. Then, in the fall, I plan to run another marathon to try to qualify again if I miss it in the spring. I also plan to run 3 ultra marathons this year. All of that means that I have to properly fuel my body, including taking in enough calcium to keep my muscles working and my bones healthy and strong. Getting the proper amount of Calcium is important for everyone, not just runners. It also is particularity important to me because I have a family history of osteoporosis and I have previously had a stress fracture. So this training season, I am making getting enough Calcium a priority!
Do You Know the Importance of Calcium?
Don’t overlook Calcium in your diet. Calcium not only plays a key role in strengthening bones and teeth, it also helps your muscles, including your heart, to function properly. But the majority of Americans do not get enough Calcium in their diet. Women particularly need Calcium, yet around 70% of women are deficient in it. Many studies show that low calcium intake throughout life is associated with low bone mass and high fracture rates as we get older. Teens need to focus on Calcium too, as peak bone mass is present by age 20, so the teenage years are not a good time to be Calcium deficient. Vitamin D intake is another important element, as it is required for the body to absorb Calcium from food sources.
Calcium is not made in the body, so it must be brought in from outside sources such as diet and supplements. If you want an easy way to find out if you are getting enough calcium, take a look at these requirements.

I’m Going To #BeActiv with Viactiv
While I certainly take in calcium through my diet, I also recently started using Viactiv Calcium Soft Chews and Viactiv Gummies to supplement my Calcium intake. Viactiv plays an important role in the three keys to healthy bones:
- Obtaining an adequate daily dose of calcium from your diet: I do this through eating dairy products and Calcium rich veggies, such as broccoli.
- Regular bone strengthening exercises: Aside from running, I specifically do strength training, which helps lead to strong bones.
- Supplementing when diet is not enough: This is where Viactive comes in!
Viactive Soft Chews and Gummies are a tasty way to supplement your diet with Calcium. The Soft Chews come in milk chocolate (my personal favorite), caramel, and sugar-free milk chocolate flavors, while the Gummies have assorted tropical fruit flavors. I love both kinds, so I kind of mix it up. Some days I take Viactiv Soft Chews, and others I take Viactive Gummies.
Viactiv Calcium Soft Chews are the number 1 doctor-recommended calcium supplement chew. One Soft Chew or Gummy taken twice daily provides 100% of the daily value of calcium for most women, and includes vitamins D and K. The addition of Vitamin D further supports the absorption of Calcium into the body. If you need gluten or dairy free, look to the Gummies! These can also be a great way to encourage your teen to take Calcium supplements.
