L’Oreal True Match Roller Foundation

Makeup companies are always looking for new ways to get you to spend your money. Lately it seems like applicator gimmicks are all the rage. Just look at all of the various vibrating mascaras out there!  Anyway, L’Oreal has a new foundation with a new roller applicator: L’Oreal True Match Roller Foundation. It has been in Europe for a while and has just recently arrived in the United States.  I saw a TV commercial for it and was curious, so I picked one up at Walgreens to do a review, where it appears to be pretty popular—I got one of the last few left and was lucky that they had my shade.

The L’Oreal Roller Foundation is a pressed cream foundation. The applicator is a foam brush on a roller. The idea is that you roll the brush over the foundation and then onto your face, which L’Oreal claims will create a streak free airbrushed look. However, that wasn’t exactly the case for me.

The first time that I used it, I found that the foundation went on a bit streaky and I had to smooth it out with my fingers.  I also thought that the roller brush was difficult to use under the eyes and around the nose.  The second time that I used it, I put a lot less on the brush and had less streaks, but didn’t get very good coverage that way.  In both instances though, once I smoothed out a few areas and put on some tinted powder over the foundation, things looked OK.  Not spectacular, but OK.  Coverage is on the sheer side.

The upshot is that I am not particularly impressed with the L’Oreal True Match Roller Makeup. You can get a better look using a standard makeup sponge as an applicator and, at $14 for the foundation, I didn’t think the quality was worth the price.  Basically, there are better drugstore foundations for less. For example, I love Sally Hansen Natural Beauty (link is to previous review). However, there is one upside to the product that will keep me using it on occasion. I like the idea of the applicator being included in the case for travel, since I tend to prefer to not have used makeup sponges floating around in my makeup case. So I’ll save it for that.

  1. I have to disagree. I actually just had the same exact experience, I ran to Walgreens because I accidentally left my makeup at my parents’ the last time I visited. There were only a few shades left in stock, and only two left in the shade I hoped and prayed was right for me (I’m horrible at picking out the right color). I got home and immediately put it on, and was surprised how well it went on. I ran the roller over my face a few times to make sure I covered it, but it feels like even coverage and it covered up all the little imperfections. Best of all, I don’t feel greasy. I’ve been using Almay’s blending makeup, I think it’s called Smart Shade or something? I’ve absolutely hated using it; the color doesn’t blend well unless you use your fingers, and it turned a darker shade than I was anticipating, making me look like I had over-tanned. The worst part was that my skin felt grimy, and actually broke out more. This feels much, much better. Then again, I got my Roller makeup for $9, on sale. LOL

  2. $9 is a much better price point than $14 in my opinion. Nice that it was on sale when it is so new! I have also tried the Almay and like you was not impressed. Matching the shade with it is difficult. I forgot about it, so I should write up a review on it!

  3. I had the same exact experience with the streaks and how it was so hard to get it under my eye and nose. Personally, I hate it because it doesn’t come up evenly and it gives me bumps everywhere I put it on. It also makes my face look very dry and once I wore it everyone noticed I was wearing make up. I also regret spending 12 dollars on this product. I give it a 4 out of 10.

  4. I really like the roller applicator. It is somewhat more difficult to apply around the nose and eyes, and it a few rolls in those areas. I liked the light yet complete coverage. It didn’t settle into crow’s feet or lines and had staying power. It’s my favorite so far.

  5. I used the true match roller foundation and after a while it just melts off your face. I am very active and need a foundation that will stay on all day. I also have sensitive skin. Does anyone else have this problem?
