Summer Beauty Essentials (Part I)

This is the first part of a summer beauty essentials series from Emma.

In honor of summer I cut my hair last week. I had flirted with the idea for a while but the timing had to be right due to my work. So I’m now rocking a shoulder length bob and my hair feels more healthier then ever. Infact it was therapeutic letting go of the dead hair. I felt inspired and started writing my summer hair essentials while at the Arrojo studios – so in a way my beauty lovers, you have shared this experience with me. Now let’s get down to what really matters – keeping our hair healthy during these hot summer days.

So how do I plan on keeping my hair gorgeous during my favorite season? Starting from the inside out baby. My new obsession –  organic chia seeds. I have been adding this nutrient rich superfood to my water lately. Chia seeds swell up to four times their size by absorbing the liquid and forming a gel like coating when added to water. I also add them to my daily Nutribullet juices (thanks mum for my birthday NutriBullet). Chia seeds have all 9 essential amino acids, making them a complete source of protein. Just one serving of chia seeds has about 10% of your daily protein requirements. Our hair is primarily made of a protein called keratin. Consuming chia seeds helps in restoring the health and strength in the hair and giving you thick and voluminous hair. Omega 3 fatty acids are abundant in chia seeds and gives hair that lustrous shine. This EFA will even help control hair loss if you are deficient in omega 3 (and apparently most Americans are). Loss of iron from the body is one of the major causes of hair loss among women and consuming chia seeds will restore iron levels in the body, promoting better circulation and hair growth. Copper and zinc (also fantastic for skin tone/repair & the immune system) are important minerals again found in chia seeds. Cooper helps in cutting down the thinning of hair, while zinc helps in repairing damage and preventing scalp infections and chia water is so filling as this powerhouse contains an abundance of fibre! And may I add, way more calcium then milk and even vitamins A, B and C. Chia seeds are truly a fabulous source for radiant hair (and skin). My next inner beauty tip for hair is my reliable friend – madame coconut. You already know my love of this beauty essential. Well I can not talk enough about how using this as a leave in conditioner helps keep my hair smooth and lustrous. I use Natures Gate extra virgin, pure and unrefined coconut oil. This intense overnight treatment really helps keep my hair healthy. I also add coconut oil to my NutriBullet smoothies with my hemp protein and organic raspberries.

I should add a side note about product build up, that can make your hair dull, for anyone who still uses hairspray and endless hair styling products. Once you have healthy hair you do not need all of those. I literally only use argan oil to style or a leave in conditioner.

In one of my favorite corners of the world – loving summer

I’ve mentioned Badger skincare before. I have now discovered a couple of their hair products that I have fallen deeply in love with and will be using all summer. Botanical Hair Oil for dry and damaged hair is a daily leave in conditioner with Argan oil. An alternative night treatment is the hardworking sea buckthorn organic hair oil -nightly vitamin restorative. This oil is ready to do the work and seriously moisturize your hair while you sleep. Badger even has a Herbal Hair Oil for dry scalps with Jojoba, Rosemary and tea tree (hmmm I should get my dad some for Father’s Day).

Welda (whose skin food I’ve used for years) has a Rosemary conditioning hair oil that restores moisture, softens split ends and adds radiant shine as it penetrates. I tried it today and love it!

I love my hair sprays as much as my face sprays and my favorite is John Masters Organics Sea Mist Sea Salt Spray with lavender. For an everyday style; wearing your hair back for that wet look I recommend the Shine On Leave-In Hair Treatment. I also absolutely love their Rose & Apricot Hair milk. A great opportunity to rock a flattering hair style and condition your hair at the same time.

I am a huge fan of hats and wear them to protect my hair during the summer. As seen in this snapshot taken last month. So whether you are wearing short, medium or long hair, always remember healthy hair is the sexiest hair. And have fun this summer with your hair!

All products are available at your local Wholefoods. Stay tuned for part 2 of my Summer Beauty Essentials out next week.
