Beauty Essentials Detox – Beauty From the Inside Out

This is a guest post from Emma, creator of the Beauty Essentials. You can view all of her posts here.

Happy 2017 beauty lovers! I’ve missed you! For the first beauty essentials of this magnificent new year I am thrilled to introduce my beautiful guest Margarita Carreras. We met in the Bahamas last month at, (my now favorite home away from home), The Sivanandra Ashram Yoga Retreat. Margarita was the teacher for ‘The Paradise Beauty From The Inside Cleanse’. This was my first ever group beauty cleanse and I have to say I can’t wait to do it again. This cleanse gave me more then I could ever imagine. As my regular beauty lovers know, my approach to beauty is from the inside out. My objective for this cleanse was to fine tune and adjust as necessary; set the tone for the new year and check in where my body was at. I can honestly say this cleanse changed my life! It has allowed me to take my nutritional goals to the next level and confirmed where I am at physically and emotionally (which is my healthiest and most empowered ever) and it inspired me to cook more. I connected with Margaritas beautiful soul and identified with her approach and philosophy. I knew you would enjoy hearing what she had to say and I think it’s the perfect way to celebrate 2017! My goal is to be my best ever and to fulfill my potential and shine so bright that I continue to vibrate high and live in the light and beam love from the inside out.

I will begin by sharing a few basic reminders and adjustments that I took away that may benefit you. First of all as I’ve said before this is a journey. So even if you are reading this and just take away one adjustment that you apply to your life, that right there is progress. This is a lifestyle as our physical, spiritual, emotional and mental health are all interconnected. Yes making the choice to become vegan was the most rewarding choice I have ever made in my entire life. It allowed me to understand, we are what we eat and our skin being our largest organ just reflects that. As a city girl life can sometimes be 24/7 and so creating the habit of eating regular meals is an achievement for me. Protein smoothies work for my breakfast, although if my body wants organic oatmeal then that’s what it will have. I do not snack, and was reminded of this on the cleanse, in-between meals and I find when each meal gives your body the nutrients it needs, and you drink enough water, it is satisfied until the next meal.

Let’s talk ingredients that you can easily pick up at your local Wholefoods or nearest health store and use everyday for that inner/outer glow and to create then support your alkaline body. I have been using cacao in my morning smoothies, inspired by the smoothies on the cleanse, and for the chocolate lovers out there this is a great alternative. Cacao benefits the skin as it is high in antioxidants. It has omega 6 fatty acids which help in cellular healing; good amounts of skin loving vitamin c (which the body does not produce or store and vitamin C helps your body absorb iron) and magnesium (which is abundant in skin benefits). Magnesium is necessary for the enzymes that regulate DNA replication and repair. Without it, the skin is subject to a host of harmful free radical damage and inflammation. Basically magnesium deficiency results in lower levels of fatty acids on the skin. This reduces elasticity and moisture and creates the perfect condition for dryness and inflammation. I continue to use chia seeds in my water (add to water and leave in the fridge for a few hours or overnight), they fill you up so they are great for weight loss, high in protein (hair and skin love and need protein), high in calcium and iron (so great if you have a heavy period as you may need more iron). I have to say I use cayenne pepper for everything! In my oatmeal, everyday in smoothes, salads, when sautéing vegetables….I’m just a lover of this beneficial spice. It is antioxidant, anti fungal, anti aging and yes can help speed up your metabolism. I started using Himalayan salt last year on a regular basis. Again I add it to everything, including my smoothies (only a pinch). It detoxifies the body by balancing systemic PH. Improves hydration by providing trace minerals, removes toxins and improves circulation. Turmeric is a spice I’ve used for years and it is a staple in my diet, however over the last year I’ve been adding it to my smoothies in the form of ‘MegaFood’ Daily Turmeric. It is fantastic for your skin, keeping it radiant and promoting hair growth – due to its anti-fungal, anti-inflammatory, anti allergic, antioxidant, antiseptic and antibacterial properties. Chlorophyll is one of my continued must haves. I’ve been using this since a teenager in the form of spirulina or chlorella or simply chlorophyll concentrate (superb for flying, just add to water and it is travel size friendly). I use ‘ChlorOxygen’ by Herbs Etc. it is all about keeping the cells full of oxygen and chlorophyll does that and supports your PH levels. I just brought PH ion Balance diagnostic ph test strips, to test my PH level and I’m happy that it is 7. Our ideal PH is slightly alkaline being 7.30-7.45 and below 7 is acidic, an alkaline body is a healthy body. Disease thrives in an acidic body. Try it – it is a superb way to see where your body is at and that will guide you forward. PH stands for power of hydrogen, which is a measurement of the hydrogen ion concentration in the body. Note that I drink organic coffee everyday and coffee is acidic. I love coffee and it just brings me pleasure so I’ve made the conscious choice to keep that in my life and I’m able to achieve my optimum PH level still – great. Alcohol, processed food, meat and cheese are all terribly acidic for example and also awful for your skin and weight.

Let’s introduce our guest.

Margarita Carreras

Hi beauties! I’m Margarita Carreras and I have been working on the integrative healing of the body for over 30 years. Yoga, dance, visual art, breath and nutrition are all ingredients of my holistic approach to wellness. I am a certified yoga instructor and an experienced health coach with a philosophy, as Hippocrates stated, of “food as medicine”.

I am dedicated to helping individuals intuitively access their own body’s wisdom to optimize health and align to their highest self. GetJuiced is my venue located in the Hudson Valley from which I create custom designed programs to meet each individual’s health goals. My program is known for super charging immune systems, supporting energy and transforming the body into a vibrant, energetic and balanced individual.

Top 5 nutritional adjustment for skin:

Keeping things simple and clean is an important factor to have glowing, youthful skin.

Hydration is my number one go to, since sipping on water throughout the day nourishes your skin.

Eating a serving of fatty acids daily is also key, my favorite is avocado. I not only consume fatty acids, but use them as the base of my skincare routine, morning and night. Coconut oil is a great cleanser substitute, which removes your makeup easily while not stripping your skin of the oils it needs to look and feel light and clear.

Using raw, organic honey as a face mask twice a week can do wonders, as it is nature’s antibiotic.

I also use collagen powder daily as a supplement in my smoothies, which promotes young, firm skin. For this, I always choose Dr. Axe Collagen Protein.

Why the beauty cleanse?

The Beauty Cleanse teaches you how to revitalize, renew, replenish and rejuvenate your body from the inside out. Its purpose is to detoxify the body on a deeper cellular level through a hands on experience. It will teach you how to alkalize your body through fresh smoothies, healing broths, salads and other raw specialty foods. It gives you a joyful approach to intuitively connect with your body by leading you on a journey that gives you the tools to maintain a more vibrant lifestyle.

How has Healthy eating changed the way you feel about your beauty routine?

Healthy eating helps me feel in balance, emotionally, spiritually and mentally. I’ve realized the importance of not only thinking of the foods I consume, but also what I put on my body. The difference in my skin and hair when I used clean, natural, nontoxic products, is tremendous. Our body is our temple, and we must treat it this way, from the inside out. By learning and experimenting with natural products, I have found the ingredients that work best for my skin.

Thank you so much Margarita. I’m so in sync with what she recommends and how she thinks. I have to say a couple of spiritual/ major adjustments I took away that I’m implementing into my daily life are blessing my food. Just the actual practice of this is so calming and humbling in itself. It allows you to feel such gratitude for the blessing of food and the power it has to nourish ones body. Also to eat slowly and chew chew chew. That I am working on due to my lifestyle here in NY but I’m making progress and it allows your body to understand that it is full (it generally takes 20 minutes for your brain to signal to the stomach it is full). It is also necessary for proper digestion, in fact there are many more benefits but these are key ones.

Bringing the glow back to NYFW.

  1. oooh, the view from the yoga platform is amazing! I’ve always wanted to do outdoor yoga – they have it in the parks here during the fall/spring (too hot in the summer).

  2. emma thanks for putting into words my
thoughts on the cleanse. I learned so much…alkaline is good acid is bad, eat slowly and savour your food. Margarita is well versed and provided wonderful recipes and tips on how to incorporate our learnings into everyday life. I also appreciated Emma your optimism and positive vibes during the cleanse, as uncovering and changing bad habits can be challenging and u provided a great example of ‘good inside reflecting positivity outside’.

  3. Hi again, Emma! Gosh, I wish I had any kind of willpower to resist snacking. Everyday, I promise myself I will not snack, and end up reaching for a little something sometime after a meal.

  4. This sound amazing, so sunny and relaxing just what I need right now lol x
